Pretty recently, they made it so you can't just look at a title and dowvote a thread... from the thread list. You're still free to click it and downvote without reading or discussing the topic.

The ability to vote on a thread should be locked until the user leaves a comment, even if they're just going to go a step further and leave a sticker while ignoring the content of the post, it should encourage more people to actually read. As opposed to downvoting because they see a champion name they dislike.

We considered this, actually, but ultimately decided that it wasn't worth implementing for two main reasons.

  • It encourages low-contribution spam posting, as every person who wants to vote has to post something. This either leads to huge amounts of spam commenting or involves a ton of moderator work to keep in check.
  • It forces all players -- even those who would rather just read and provide silent input -- to actively engage. While we like encouraging participation, we don't want to cut out those who choose to keep a lower profile from the engagement currently available to them.

I'm not saying this is a set-in-stone policy that will never change, or that we can't look into whether this is something that should change on a board-by-board basis, but it's at least a little insight into our current thinking.
