Can people explain downvotes?
Because I personally think they do more harm then good, and would like to see what people think they're actually used for

I always figured they're for comments that are irrelevant or harmful to the discussion, because if you disagree with someone you should probably debate instead of downvote.
Way to go people downvoting my post. Proving my point: instead of using them properly you simply just downvote because you don't agree. The burning irony.
