EDIT: I don't care about the upvotes/downvotes themselves, but what they represent. They represent how many people are disagreeing with something as simple as "don't use offensive slurs, if you do, they will be subject to moderation"

Using words like "retarded" is unnecessary, especially when much better words exist and don't rely on the shock value of a slur to get the point across.

You do realize that's after ~30 upvotes, right? That means about one person in three is upset by what I posted. I'm okay with that.

In the end, my "job" isn't to be popular. It's to keep the boards from turning into an absolute dumpster fire. Part of that is doing things some people are going to dislike and rolling with the backlash. Winston Churchill famously said, "I welcome their hate" and while I wouldn't want things on the board to reach anywhere near that point, there's something to be said for running towards one's principles rather than away from them.

Yes but the problem with that idea/situation is assuming that everyone is downvoting because they disagree, which might not necessarily be the case.

While it certainly isn't supposed to mean that, it generally ends up doing just that. It is a major flaw of reddit (which LoLs boards are based off of) as well, and is something that can very easily be seen in the more politically oriented subs.

The difference is the context. The Voltaire quote is in context of government censorship. This is in the context of a private company setting the rules that they feel reinforce their personal beliefs.

I don't agree with some rules, but people complaining that they can't promote hate speech (I know "retarded" is a mild slur, but it is offensive nonetheless) is crazy. The first amendment doesn't mean you can say whatever you want and not receive punishment, it means that the government can't legally do anything to take away your voice.

Riot is a private company with their own rules. You agree to these rules when you sign the EULA. Don't complain that a mod politely asks you to tone down your language.

I never claimed the context wasn't different, but the idea is the same. Are they allowed to censor it? Yes. Their company is their company. Should they? Well, in my opinion, no, they shouldn't. I believe we get rid of the problem at the source: take this dumb soundwaves off of their high pedestal. You remember back in 5th grade when you first said the word Fuck and you thought it was so bad and you would get a rush of adrenaline whenever you said it? And now you can casually say it? Thats how we remove the power from words.

Its people protesting the censorship of a public forum. And I wouldnt call "retarded" a slur. I myself have severe ADHD, not that self diagnoses bullshit either, I'm on medication for it. I do not think people should be censored in anyway. The only way you remove the power of a word is to drive it into the ground, not put it on a platform of as "no-no" word.

Then I get replies insulting me. People unironically upvote those replies. EDIT: And as you can see, we literally have that right here.

I've been correct every time I've said Gameplay needs harsher posting requirements. If people don't like being forced to think by using evidence, I wouldn't care if they leave from it.

People don't like being told they're wrong. Welcome to the drabness of reality. All I can do is reinforce my ideals of truth. I know some people have changed for the better because of me, and that's good enough.

The first link you presented is a good example. You started off by making a single statement that went directly against what the OP was saying. Not that the OP had a particularly good post, but your first reply to him was of a similar level of effort.

In your second link you had a sarcastic tone, even though you did link to stats. Link five is similar.

Link 8 is just a jab at someone. It might be accurate, but it's purpose is just to jab at the guy. Not really sure why you linked that particular post.

You can be fairly aggressive with your posts, particularly when talking to someone who hasn't fully thought things through, or who thinks they have a good argument when they really don't. Not saying that's a bad thing, but that with the occasional sarcasm leads a lot of people to read your tone wrong.

And unfortunately your replies to people who read your tone wrong don't exactly make them rethink their first impression of you. I wouldn't ask you to change a thing personally, but it does make you an excellent downvote farmer.

I guess I'll play devil's advocate here.

I would assume a good portion of the people who downvoted the mod in that particular thread don't disagree with "don't use offensive slurs", they probably disagree with the idea that "retarded" is an offensive slur. The meaning of the word "retard" is so far divorced from its origin as a technical term for the disabled at this point that for the vast majority of young people (who make up the audience for this board) it has little to do with the disabled. "Retarded", as an adjective or verb, is even farther divorced from being a slur for a specific group of people. Its certainly still insulting to call something "retarded", but its not really a slur at this point, just another regular insult, and insults have value.

Now, I don't actually think its important to defend the right to use that particular word on here - as you said, its unnecessary. I do, however, think its a massive generalization of the people who downvoted that post to imply that they would like to use offensive slurs freely, and a frankly insulting one at that. Some of the people might believe in the kind of argument against "retarded" being offensive like the one I laid out. Some might believe that its offensive but not want it censored anyway, and would rather community reaction be the punishment than moderation. Some might disagree with moderation in principle. And yeah, some might just want to call people "retards". But definitely not all of them, probably not even a majority.
