I love how moderators get mass downvoted for telling people that using slurs is against the rules

It really proves how mature this place is.

EDIT: I don't care about the upvotes/downvotes themselves, but what they represent. They represent how many people are disagreeing with something as simple as "don't use offensive slurs, if you do, they will be subject to moderation"

Using words like "retarded" is unnecessary, especially when much better words exist and don't rely on the shock value of a slur to get the point across.

You do realize that's after ~30 upvotes, right? That means about one person in three is upset by what I posted. I'm okay with that.

In the end, my "job" isn't to be popular. It's to keep the boards from turning into an absolute dumpster fire. Part of that is doing things some people are going to dislike and rolling with the backlash. Winston Churchill famously said, "I welcome their hate" and while I wouldn't want things on the board to reach anywhere near that point, there's something to be said for running towards one's principles rather than away from them.

If you think that is disappointing don't look at the Gameplay board. Ever.

They are just words. People need to grow up and learn they are just words. Would it be better if someone said:

Hey morban they are just words you frakin weetard.

Better?

Moderating politeness is nazi'ish at its finest.

Its people protesting the censorship of a public forum. And I wouldnt call "retarded" a slur. I myself have severe ADHD, not that self diagnoses bullshit either, I'm on medication for it. I do not think people should be censored in anyway. The only way you remove the power of a word is to drive it into the ground, not put it on a platform of as "no-no" word.

I get downvoted on a daily basis for asking people to support their claims with evidence.

Then I get replies insulting me. People unironically upvote those replies. EDIT: And as you can see, we literally have that right here.

I've been correct every time I've said Gameplay needs harsher posting requirements. If people don't like being forced to think by using evidence, I wouldn't care if they leave from it.

This thread is absolutely [EDITED BY MODERATION] !

Words become meaningless if its said all the time to the point no one takes it seriously anymore.

Making it special and forbidden to say gives it power.

Why would you want to do that?

Children think that the upvote and downvote are like and dislike aka hate (burn it)

what about double standards? one person uses it, and it gets removed by moderation. you include it in your post, and it gets to stay up. now why is that? did the meaning of the word change?

I guess I'll play devil's advocate here.

I would assume a good portion of the people who downvoted the mod in that particular thread don't disagree with "don't use offensive slurs", they probably disagree with the idea that "retarded" is an offensive slur. The meaning of the word "retard" is so far divorced from its origin as a technical term for the disabled at this point that for the vast majority of young people (who make up the audience for this board) it has little to do with the disabled. "Retarded", as an adjective or verb, is even farther divorced from being a slur for a specific group of people. Its certainly still insulting to call something "retarded", but its not really a slur at this point, just another regular insult, and insults have value.

Now, I don't actually think its important to defend the right to use that particular word on here - as you said, its unnecessary. I do, however, think its a massive generalization of the people who downvoted that post to imply that they would like to use offensive slurs freely, and a frankly insulting one at that. Some of the people might believe in the kind of argument against "retarded" being offensive like the one I laid out. Some might believe that its offensive but not want it censored anyway, and would rather community reaction be the punishment than moderation. Some might disagree with moderation in principle. And yeah, some might just want to call people "retards". But definitely not all of them, probably not even a majority.
