How do I make Aatrox work?

I cannot figure out how to make everyone's favourite demon swordsman work. I know the basic: He's a lesser Voluc: Hybrid damage, based on lifesteal and right clicks with an ult made to capitalize on that. That I get.

But I never seem to make him work. BoRK into tank doesn't give enough raw damage and he still blows up instantly, full tank has the same issue, full damage lets you do horrible things to whoever you can shank, provided you can actually do so without getting 100-0d by even their tank.

Just like... What do?

He's one of the most sensitive champions in the game. By that I mean if you have a level or item advantage, he is almost impossible to kill. He can 1v3 if he's ahead and heal off all the damage. If he's behind he has a knockup and a slow and that's about all he's gonna do.

Farm like fuck and avoid any duels you aren't sure you can win. Gank other lanes. Imo he's a better jungler than laner because his ganks are very, very effective and it lets him snowball harder.

look up xj9 or princess ally on youtube and watch the aatrox vids learn and profit. also his runes/masteries and guide is on lolking just type in aatrox and go to xj9

I have trouble playing Aatrox into a lot of top lane picks as well. I don't claim to be an Aatrox master but here are some of my thoughts.

You should try to stack your passive as fast as you can from level one if you start with W. Autoattacking minions with Blood Price and Qing away to saftey if you can't seem to win a trade is probably a good idea as well. The bonus attack speed from passive once full or close to full will help immensly with your Csing and quick Autoattack harass.

You make sure you have your W passive ready for whichever. His W is a large part of his strength, switch between them depending on the situation.

If faced with a counter-pick, or against a champion that you simply cannot facestomp early game, you will probably want to save Q for escapes; like if a Darius tries to start a fight while you're Csing, you Q away.

A lot of tips and tricks websites and comments from youtube to lolking to facebook mention that E is a great harass tool for match-ups you can't dive deep for. Like Versing and Irelia, or Riven, or Darius. Harass with E.

His Ult is pretty self explanatory and straightforward. Just make sure you don't use it as a panic button, you'll lose the buff once you use your passive's active.

You really have to be mindful of your current dueling potential. Don't pick fights you know you can't win, but if you know you can't escape from something, fight it out and see if your sustain will turn it around.

Otherwise, focus on team fighting, using your knockup to initiate for your team. Still build BORK into tank, but maybe fit a Bloodthirster and Frozen Mallet in there
