Tips on Garen setup and playstyle

Just thought I'd ask for a little help on how to set up Garen masteries and a rune page, and for general tips on how to effectively play him. I included my masteries and rune page, so any input or advice is welcome.

I mainly followed this guide, and the item build path seems solid, based on what tanks I play with build, so...yeah.

As for tips on how to play him, I'd really appreciate some. I don't usually play tanky champs, so I don't know that much about playing them.
