Why is roaming support not a thing anymore? Tell me how one plays roaming support.

Eh, you go to another lane for gank/push/vision when your ADC doesn't need you?

Some issues with roaming supports:

  • Enemy junglers/roaming mid-laners could destroy them.
  • Their ADCs would be outmanned in bot lane, more vulnerable to ganks, and lacking someone to help them secure kills, or even farm if needed.
  • They would have to be good at ganking other lanes, otherwise they would be underleveled from the lack of proximity to regular enemy minion deaths.

So, the reason why I asked was because I played a game as roaming smite support. I counterjungled, kept pressure on the enemy bot lane, and ganked mid. I didn't simply leave my laner unattended, but I was out of bot lane for at least half of the laning phase. I managed to set the enemy jungler behind when I stole krugs.

All in all, it was a funny game. I just wanted to know the viability of it.

Roaming Alistar used to be a thing. Chain ganks for days. He got nerfed for it. Same thing happened with Maokai, though I believe it was less prevalent.

I think one of the main reasons for it going away was global exp sources taking a hit. Roaming can definitely still work, but if you're unsuccessful at it you'll be extremely far behind. It also requires the 1v2 bot which most people aren't comfortable taking. I liked when roaming was a thing, I wouldn't be sad to see it come back.
