Ryze Support?

So, I've liked top lane a bit recently (although I am a support main) and I'm recently picked up Ryze again after his update. After playing him a lot I kinda wondered why noone plays him support. Besides the reason that he only has one cc ability (and only a root), it is a point-and-click insta-root nd because of its mana cost and his generally high mana pool it can be spammed out the wazoo Also his new skillshot q is a lot better for constant poke to deal damage (duh) and proc spellthiefs. I don't think he'd make a half-bad support but no one ever plays him support so there must be a reason... any input would be nice.

Rooting will not really do anything to a ranged champion as they will still be able to auto attack you. Champions like Leona, Thresh, Janna, Braum provide so much more than Ryze player ever could

You really made me think about this! I've been pondering it for like an hour now and I just can't come up with a solid conclusion. Try running some questions like this one through your mind.

Do I have a lane presence with no personal items?

No tear. No Rod of Ages. No Frozen heart. Keep in mind you're likely starting roughly 1800g in the hole and will not be soaking up cs in lane. (1800 being Support Tier2 item, Sightstone, Vision ward and minimal potions.) You can typically finish these items by the 10 minute mark. Boots might be a solid choice after these, so you can keep up with your ADC, pushing any personal items even further down the chain.

Pros of Support Ryze

  • Able to root a single person
  • Good pokes with QE
  • ....yea, thats it.

Cons of Support Ryze

  • Very mana-dependant (full W rank is 100 mana)
  • To deal very high damage with his ult, minions has to be sacrificed, resulting in ADC losing cs.
  • Not very reliable in counter-ganking/saving ADC from a gank.
  • Q being turned into a skillshot is a little more difficult in pulling off pokes.
  • Reworked Ryze cant be built tanky, so he's pretty squishy at bot lane.
  • Ryze's pokes will also shove lane pretty easily early game since his passive & E will kept on bouncing off minions.
