Top lane is a bit of a kerfuffle at the moment.
There are a few things that make top laners good:
-being able to escape (top is a long lane and you need to be self sufficient)
-having decent wave clear (because you should realistically be the only one in the lane early/mid game and have to keep the minions off your tower, and late game you might need to split push)
-having some CC
-being a decent duelist
-tankiness and/or engage potential
You usually try to get 3 of those things, 4 is preferred, and if you can get all 5, you're golden.
For instance:
Lissandra has her claw-port for escaping.
All of her skills waveclear.
2 hard CCs and a slow
ult makes her a potent duelist
and with Zonyas, she can target herself with her ult and use her Hourglass for double stasis prison, allowing for engagement and 'tankiness'
Teemo, on the other hand:
moves quick to escape
can multidot minions or drop a shroom on them for pushing
can blind auto attack champions as well as have the shroom slow
but is a bad duelist against non-auto attackers
and clearly lacks a reason to go tank as well as any real way to engage
The nice thing is that it's not all 100% black and white. Fiora, for example, might have terrible waveclear and have no real escape, as well as being non-tanky, but if you build Hydra+Randuins early, you can push, tank, and (hopefully) just duel whoever comes to kill you and get away scott free.
I recommend trying some of the ADCs you like up top. Vayne and Quinn historically have been decent against bruisers, and mid-Ezreal has been becoming a thing. I expect he'd do well top lane as well.
