Need help with Top Lane

I am hoping some one on here can give me some insight on some fun Top laners and how to play them against their counters and against champs in general. I main support/adc/mid and am looking to learn top lane too. Any help and tips would be awesome and helpful!

I would like anyone who plays some non-meta top laners to give some insight too on which champs that are not really top laners who do well up there

Top lane is a bit of a kerfuffle at the moment.

There are a few things that make top laners good:

-being able to escape (top is a long lane and you need to be self sufficient) -having decent wave clear (because you should realistically be the only one in the lane early/mid game and have to keep the minions off your tower, and late game you might need to split push) -having some CC -being a decent duelist -tankiness and/or engage potential

You usually try to get 3 of those things, 4 is preferred, and if you can get all 5, you're golden.

For instance:

Lissandra has her claw-port for escaping. All of her skills waveclear. 2 hard CCs and a slow ult makes her a potent duelist and with Zonyas, she can target herself with her ult and use her Hourglass for double stasis prison, allowing for engagement and 'tankiness'

Teemo, on the other hand: moves quick to escape can multidot minions or drop a shroom on them for pushing can blind auto attack champions as well as have the shroom slow but is a bad duelist against non-auto attackers and clearly lacks a reason to go tank as well as any real way to engage

The nice thing is that it's not all 100% black and white. Fiora, for example, might have terrible waveclear and have no real escape, as well as being non-tanky, but if you build Hydra+Randuins early, you can push, tank, and (hopefully) just duel whoever comes to kill you and get away scott free.

I recommend trying some of the ADCs you like up top. Vayne and Quinn historically have been decent against bruisers, and mid-Ezreal has been becoming a thing. I expect he'd do well top lane as well.

Cassiopeia is a good top laner atm. Despite her squishyness, she is a great lane bully with enormous kill potential. Thanks to her ult, she is hard to tower-dive, or all in, and it has a short CD especially with her built in CDR, so you don't need to worry about using it as a disengage. She also has inbuilt mana sustain on her E, and at 100 stacks of her passive it gains a self-heal effect. As an AP champ, she can easily be built as an off-tank, so you're not completely sacrificing that from the team, and what you gain is a secondary dps carry, and extra utility from her aoe stun ultimate.

There are 3 ways to play top lane:

    1. snowball the hell out of your lane, and make plays elsewhere because of how strong you are. The best champs for this are super strong early damage laners/bullies, such as, Riven Rengar LeeSin Garen Darius Pantheon Renekton. As you may have noticed every example I gave was an early game ad champ that has good mobility, you want to be able to dominate your lane while being able to easily roam mid or bot for ganks/objectives. This is by far the easiest way to top, unless you don't apply your pressure well enough after you snowball. There are some early ap champs like Elise, but she has a higher skillcap than the ones I mentioned.
  • 2)Splitpush all day (afk splitpush, I don't like that term but... it is sort of true). The idea is to play someone that is amazing at splitpushing, and to exert as much pressure top to force mutiple enemies to "waste their time" to stop you from getting free towers. While they come up to stop you, if your team is aware of how splitpushing works, they will snag free objectives while the enemy team chases you down. Champs like Tryndamere Aatrox Nasus Fiora Heimerdinger Singed Jax all do this by either actually wailing on the tower for days, or by proxying waves (singed). This can be anti-fun, especially if your team doesn't realize why you are splitpushing in the first place.

    1. Then there is the new "teleport meta," where every top laner takes tp, because of the amazing ganks you can perform due to your cc and tankiness. Champs like Maokai Malphite MonkeyKing Rumble Gnar Lissandra Chogath Sion Irelia all have these traits and can easily get free kills for the team with their awesome engagement or tp roams. This one is harder to pull off if your team doesn't pay attention or follow up your ganks. This one is my favorite, and the most satisfying to play IMO.
