do you mean the cast animation when you first press R? (To cancel this e>r) Or activate the skillshot portion a little bit faster (R during third Q I believe)

Yes, cast W immediately after you cast R. You should notice that some riven players will get close to the enemy and use this to engage on them. Riven has alot of animation cancels like autoattack animation canceling (autoattack and then immediately Q) .

Source: I've playing alot of riven games and tested out her animation cancels.

1st r: cancel with w/e 2nd r: cancel with e you probably don't need to do both, tho- if you use the 1st one- rwqqeqr if not, erqqwqer/re autos as appropriate

First, the rule about the Riven's ult, it has a mandatory 1 second delay between forming the sword and being able to use the ultimate again (the 2nd R). You can cancel all you want, but that one second is not avoidable in any way. Most practical way to cancel Riven's "forming" animation is to either cancel into or out of it:

  1. E>R will form the sword while you're dashing and it's the smoothest way to cancel Riven's ult first activation. Just remember that the surprise factor is about going in on them while activating your ult, not hiding from them that you've activated it. A good player will immediately recognize the "forming" sound it makes when triggered.
  2. R>E will make Riven start the forming animation and then cancel it into the dash. It's in every way slower/worse way to cancel Riven's ult, but it does have one purpose - if you don't need the extra surprise, it lets you activate the second R a lot sooner than the first way of cancelling. Because you pressed R and then you're dashing in that 1 second window in which you can't use the second R. You can cancel the 2nd R with any Q, not just the 3rd.
