Carry Supports!

Hello Summoners!

Im noticing Riot starting their own weird meta pick articles and I'd like to share my thoughts on some champions you should try in the support position.

First a little background: I've ranked from Silver 3 to Plat 5 this past season playing nearly all my games as support. The reason i play such weird supports is not to try and be a hipster, but to WIN! Have you ever played a lane with that derpy Draven who cant catch his own axes and he ends up feeding the whole game? Well I grew sick of losing because my Nami or Thresh lacks any carry potential so I began to play champions that could carry but without much gold. So without futher ado, my carry supports!

MY personal favorite and go to support is Veigar! Why? His early game isnt nearly as bad because you dont have to spam your Q on minions and can instead spam Q on their team. His passive makes running a faerie charm and wards/pots ALL YOU WILL NEED TO LANE. Veigar's stun is AMAZING, it stops ganks and their bot laners in their tracks and is invaluable when it comes time for the mid-game teamfights.

But what about the lack of AP grinding on his Q!?!?! Answer: You dont need it! His ratios are already amazing on his ult and W.

My Build: Morellicon is a MUST. It has the CDR for more ults and stuns plus all the mana regen you will need. After that, I'd begin the DFG then finish it up with your typical high dmg mage stuff. Skill Order: Q>E>W if you are winning your lane or E>Q>W if you are having trouble. Sometimes i take an extra E point to help land my W or if he lane is kinda balanced.

Reasons to pick Veigar Support: You need CC, DMG, and the enemy has hard to catch enemies like Nid, Kass, or Zed. The stun will help lock them down for you or your team to kill them. Reasons not to pick Veigar Support: Enemy team has a mage support that normally beats you in middle like a Lux, or a if they have a Leona. I fear leona the most, but try to hurt her down before the lvl 2 so it makes her engage risky.

RAISER YOUR DONGERS! That's right folks, Heimerdinger. Turrets, turrets, and more turrets. Heimerdinger brings a whole new style to the bot lane. Position your turrets to protect you and your adc from ganks or all-ins. Feel free to annoy any morganas, threshs, or blitzcranks by dropping a turret at your feet just as they Q. LOL.

What about his turrets stealing my CS!?!?! Answer: Dont place your turrets near the damn CS!

My Build: Morello is always nice because your turrets will keep the passive on people constantly which is good against a soraka/sona lane. Armguard next because armor. Then whatever you feel you need. Skill Order: Q>W>E, Nearly always the case unless you are invading grab the E.

Reasons to pick Heimerdinger Support: The enemy team has a shaco/eve. Set up shop behind you with turrets and turn that 3v2 into a triple kill! (For the adc of course). Easy laning and sustain with cheap turrets and your healing passive for you and the adc. Reasons not to pick Heimerdinger Support: Enemy team has some uncatchable champs like Kass, or Zed. Botlane support is a Nami. Idk why but she rocks my socks down there possible because of the wave and turret interaction.

These two champions carried me to where i am now, but I play many more non-meta supports such as: Malzahar, Galio, Xerath, Fiddlesticks, and Katarina. I can make a page similar to this for the listed champs if the demand is there. Feel free to ask any questions and ill try to check back ASAP.

DISCLAIMER: Let it be known that i am constantly buying 2 green wards and a pink ward. Vision is important but sometimes buying that Tome for 20 AP can net a kill to buy a games worth of wards...

I've ran Darius/Volibear bot support to some success. Darius is great as a simple lane bully presence, the threat of his pull and bleed and often push the enemies back to let your adc free farm (though it pushes the lane like mad) His grab is really more useful then people take for it, and with a slow/bleed/exhaust, the adc should easily pick the kill off with their range. And if things go bad, well you're Darius. Build traditional relic sheild doran sheild go tanky, build first armor /mr item, put on a hydra, build from there.

Volibear is simply about repositioning the enemy with more reliability then a hook or grab. Yeah the enemy might flash or use a skill to get away, but your Rolling Thunder isn't wasted since you can a minion. Both Darius and Voli can peel for their adc, with voli being able to flip the enemy jungler into the turret should they dive.

The problem I have with many off-meta supports is the sheer lack of cc and utility. Support Volibear is THE WORST (No offense, Faith Breaker). He has zero hard cc- No stuns, no knockups, no snares. He can flip one person. Flipping them away requires running all the way around them. He has one slow, and I'm not sure I've ever seen a support Voli use it defensively. If you need to disengage and your support is Volibear, you are SCREWED. That slow isn't gonna do much of anything to a determined Lucian/Graves/Kalista/literally any mobile adc, and support Volis don't know enough to try and run around to flip someone away.

Pet peeves. Support Katarina is the same thing. At that point you're not running an adc/support lane, you're running a kill lane, because Kat does nothing but damage. You better hope the other team doesn't have a Leona, Taric, Braum, Nami, Lulu, Lux, literally anyone with a stun, knockup, or snare (Most meta supports. Hmmmmm.), because your lack of utility will get both of you killed.

This is also why I hate support Nidalee. Damage and a teeny bit of sustain, that's it. You get engaged on at an inopportune time and you're dead meat.

I can't speak much to Darius because I don't know how he works.

I've had success with Taric. Maybe not a carry, but with 30-40 cdr he can outduel a lot of people, and if ahead, enemy adc's. Blitzcrank also has a lot of damage later on with the right items and can easily burst and solo kill an adc.

My favorite carry support right now is Malphite. I only take him if the enemy team is severely over commiting to a full AD comp. I come to lane with 70+ AR at level 1 and laugh as I trade shard for autos that don't even break my shield. Then back off and repeat until the enemy ADC is so zoned they cry.

I build Frozen Heart, Sunfire, Thornmail, NinjsTabi, Sightstone as my core. Late game so many options for 6th including Guardian Angel, Zonyas, Warmogs, ect...

Use my initiation and anti AD CC to swing team fights and bully lone wolf players.

Take TP to help split push and gain mobility and map presence for counter ganking and defending warded objectives.
