Looking to improve myself: Tips Versus Rumble?

So I've played League off and on ever since its release, and I've been on another League kick lately. I'm pretty out of practice with some of my old favorites, but I've noticed something in particular. I cannot, for the life of me, ever seem to win top lane against Rumble. I don't know what is it, but he's like my kryptonite. This is not a QQ against him - I know that I'm just not playing against him correctly. I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Please note that I play a lot of blind pick (I dislike the drama of Ranked) so I'm not interested in specific counter picks, but more strategies as a whole on how to play against him. I play a variety of top picks, from tanks like Shen to carries like Quinn and everything in between. Some things are obvious - I should build MR since he deals magic damage, but Rumble often picks up a Haunting early which weakens my MR. It just always feels like a losing battle. Other than having my jungler camp my lane, I'd like to know if there are common mistakes that players make when playing against him.

Any thoughts?

Hey there, Seeing as Rumble is reliant upon his "Flamespitter (Q)" to do tons of damage, if you are looking to trade with him at all, best to do it when that is on cooldown (6 seconds). IF you see him "Overheat" (heat bar goes red), don't let him auto-attack you and use whatever ranged abilities you have. - While is overheated he cant cast spells for 6 seconds, but get empowered auto-attacks = stay out of melee range.

Mirage Seraph (NA) is right when he/she says you should play a few games as him to understand how he works and so that you can understand his weaknesses.

Here's a guide to Rumble so you can look to see how to avoid his damage and build to counter what he would get. http://www.lolking.net/guides/336905

Dodge his ultimate.

Build MR.

Watch his heat bar. (If overheated, or red bar, he will be unable to use any of his abilities and can only auto attack)

Dodge his ultimate.

Dodge his ultimate.

Dodge his ultimate.....

Dodge his ultimate.

Arcinex is right in building MR especially. Unless he's forced to max his shock poles or whatever they are first, the vast majority of his damage comes from his firespitter which is a DOT. Little bit of MR goes a long way. Turn your MR into a Maw or a Spirit Visage, yeah he builds MPen but it's either that or take true damage from him. Pick your poison.

I know you're not interested in counter picks, but just letten ya know, Shen gets stomped by Rumble. Just get tanky fast and don't let him kill you.

As for when to go in on him, try to bait him into overheating. Once his overheat is finishing go in and trade before he can use his second round of Cooldowns. His damage output more than doubles when he's in danger zone but if he's at 0 heat he CAN'T use a Danger Zone skill until one of them goes off CD. Plus if he is still overheating while you're running towards him, then he can't slow you or shield the first bit of damage.

ALWAYS try to bait out his ult. It does stupid damage and I can often times 1v2 at 6 just with a well placed ult. As Rumble, I personally like to bait the jungler and the laner into going into the bushes and I put my ult across the bushes. 50% of the time I come out 1 for 1 or with a double kill. I don't know if other Rumbles do that but keep an eye out for it.

Lastly. Play a few games as Rumble when he's free to get a feel for his CDs and how quick you can go into danger zone and how awkward it is to silence yourself, but the situations where overheating is super beneficial. He's a champion that requires a lot of knowledge to fight and play as. Doesn't even need to be an actual match, take it to customs or whatever.
