Farm or Poke with Veigar?

I've really come to enjoy Veigar and his kit, but I've can't figure out the proper way to lane as him. My usual strategy as Veigar is to literally not die in lane, which involves me going flash/exhaust just to stop the all in I'm inevitably going to receive. As I try not to die, I just try and farm with my Q and back whenever I have the best opportunity. I almost never go in for a kill, unless my jungler is ready (ganking for Veigar is pretty easy, as the event horizon is a good way to stop a target from running away, and hopefully, panicking and just walking into the stun).

Just reading this, however makes me feel like this is the absolute wrong approach to playing mid in general. Playing to "not die" leads my lane opponent to have complete control, and ends up still outfarming me, roaming for kills, and overall having better "teamwork" then I do.

How do I lane as Veigar? Should I bother farming my Q, or use it to poke? How do I own the lane as him (especially against Zed and Katarina , that's truly a nightmare).

Your Q penetrates the first target. Use it to double farm or to poke an opponent hiding behind minions. It does hurt, so poke when you can. Recall the value of ability power though. By default, minions are worth 15 or so gold. AP is worth 20 per point, so killing a minion with Q is more than double its normal value. Always Q farm. Always.

Level 1: q farm and poke with auto attacks whenever possible 2: take e and use it defensively as needed. Don't be afraid to use it to stun minions to prevent the wave from pushing. 3: upgrade q for the damage. Q+AA is your standard poke at this point. 4: w. From now on, feel free to use your stun if you think you'll land it and not just burn mana. If you succeed, immediately drop dark matter and throw a baleful strike and auto attack at the stunned enemy 5: upgrade q 6: grab ult. If your enemy is stupid, you can kill them now if you took ignite. 7: upgrade q 8: upgrade e for stun duration. If you've been farming as you should be, you'll now have enough AP to 100->0 your lane opponent if you land your stun. They'll come back to lane and either cower under their turret or summon their jungler to camp mid. In the former case, you won, go roam for more kills. In the latter case, let your allies know the jungler is wasting time in mid so they can go aggressive and make plays elsewhere without fear of ganks.
