Fighting assassins as ADC, and building against them?

This is mostly based towards Zed and MasterYi , as it's who I see the most and who I see run straight through my tanks and everyone else to just blow me up instantly. Generally, you'd want someone to stop them before they get to me, via a silence or cc (playing with a Lulu against a Yi was amazing) but I figure I should also build against them just for a safe measure. The three items I thought of were Warmogs, Guardian Angel and Zhonyas Hourglass.

GA gives ok stats in armor and MR, but by that point I assume everyone already built armor penetration, so I just die, come back, and die again.

Zhonyas doesn't really add any useful stats to an ADC (maybe Ezreal or something) other then the armor, and the active is basically just another GA but now with a obvious sound effect and maybe dodging a Zed ult.

Warmogs... I'm not really sure. Having more health is nice, so I won't get blown up as quickly, but I feel like it won't necessarily help much if I get focused hard.

If anyone has personal experiences with these items (or items I didn't mention) let me know and I'll try them out in a game. If it helps any, I generally play as Tristana Ezreal Graves in the ADC role

Guardian Angel is probably your best bet, since most assassins will likely be dead or have their abilities on cooldown by the time you revive. Randuin's Omen or Banshee's Veil are also good choices for additional health and resistances.

All of these work pretty well with the shield and lifesteal Bloodthirster provides and gives you a better chance to survive.

However, most carries have to rely on their team to peel for them, so try to stay behind or among your allies and hope they peel for you. Be very careful walking around without vision, so you don't get caught out.

I like to build a Maokai into that type of assassin, since he gives me damage reduction when he stands next to me.

But in all seriousness: the best thing you can do is make sure your team knows who the biggest threat to you is. The second-best thing you can do is position away from them; so far away that they have to dive into the rest of your team and away from their own.

Randuins.

No seriously, if you build squishy you WILL lose to assassins. The point of an assassin is to kill squishies easily.

With any of these champions your positioning is your number one defense. If they can drop you, stay where they cannot get to you unless they go into your team. If your team engages and they take that opportunity to run by then you should move back while they are chasing you. If they stop chasing you and turn to fight your team, you can move up to dps. This is for 2 reasons :

  • You can't dps if they kill you.

  • They can't dps your team if they are focusing you.

item 3140 removes Zed ultimate. It also builds into a item 3139 giving you a defensive option that does not make you sacrifice your dps. As any of those champions you can jump away and item 3140 the Zed ult, then just kite him.

MasterYi is a little trickier as you need to play around his alpha strike. With Tristana you can ult him away and if he tries to alpha strike to catch up you can jump away.

Graves and Ezreal you need to try and bait out his alpha strike. You can toss your Q's, W's to see if he tries to dodge with his alpha strike. If not, most yi's will try to dodge if you ult them. After he alpha strikes, use your dash to reposition away from him.

Late game assassin's are tougher as generally you will either burst and kill them in the case of MasterYi , or they will catch you and tear you down in a few shots.

If an assassin can just decimate you then building a item 3026 is a good call later game. You may die the first time, but your team should be able to damage / turn / regroup as you are respawning. The assassin should not be safe to just stand there while you respawn.

This is also assuming you and the assassin are around equal item strength. If the assassin is really fed than you can't really fight them as they specialize in duels.

Hope this helps!

If it's an AD assassin, then Randuins probably offers the most short term/all in survivability along with good kiting skills while using the active and LS from your Bloodthirster.

If is a mage assassin, then some combination of Hexdrinker/Maw, QSS/Scimitar, and Banshee Viel may do the trick without completely putting your DPS in the dumpster.
