Basically, splitpushing is when you push out a lane alone and your team:

  1. All disappears to farm jungle camps, resulting in the enemy team collapsing on you
  2. Engage a 4v5 before you can reach the lane to begin pushing it and get wiped.

More seriously, the basic idea of splitpushing is to pressure a location on the map away from your team. If the enemy responds to you pushing, you will have dragged 1+ member of the enemy team to deal with you, which should give your team a numeric advantage elsewhere.

If you have teleport, you will generally try to splitpush away from the current objective (i.e. push top when going for Dragon and push bot when going for Baron).

Splitpushing can be a good choice when you are (personally) ahead and when you are behind. If you are ahead, it will likely require multiple enemies to handle you which will give your team a numeric advantage. If you are behind, then you will be dragging someone more useful than you away from their team to help mitigate their advantage.

Obviously, there is a lot more too it than that, but that is the basic idea.
