Played against a Mordekaiser today for the first time.

I was Pantheon top, knew the gist of his skills. Gets shield off minions, has a ranged AOE I want to avoid, so I played safe and poked with Q, except..I couldn't damage him. Not saying I attacked him and didn't do very much damage, I'm talking I'd throw my spear at him, no shield, and it literally did nothing to his health.

This happened multiple attacks including him taking a full duration Heart Seeker and his health not moving. Is there some kind of hidden passive to Mordekaiser I'm not aware of that blocks attacks or something?

He gets a shield off minions. SHIELD.

he use his e before your q lands, hence no dmg

it's his passive shield - yeah he's very oppressive in lane, but if he's pushed he's really gankable.

the shield isn't visible in the same spot other shields are. it's his resource bar, so you won't see the hp bar move.

Whenever I am up against a champ I don't know well, I try to pull up their wiki page for a quick glance-over while the game loads. I learned to do this after suffering an embarrassing loss to Malphite for a reason very similar to yours.

His shield kind of "replaces" his health bar, so any damage to him will touch his shield passive first, then goes onto his health bar. Damage to his shield also includes summoner 14 & true damage.

As I'm a Morde main myself, there's a few rare ways to counter him:

The usuals. Get your jungler to consistently gank him. But note a few things. Morde may be immobile, but has the potential to easily 1v2 people. Best to isolate him from your own minions to gank him easier to reduce the amount of shields he gains.
If you want to do some hard pokes/engage a kill on him, do it after he uses his E. He is quite vulnerable without it.
If you're below 40%-50% HP, don't get cocky and go up to is face just to cs or trying to kill him down before you do, and just recall to your base. Morde will usually -Q-E- -ult. That's one of my killdown moveset if I see someone low.
