A pro said this before (don't remember who), but let me quote him...

Before you even set foot into a Ranked match, you need to learn, in depth, three roles, and three champs per role. That way, you'll never get banned out. -Some Person

Just main more than one champion.

Main a role or 2. Focus on 2-3 champions in these roles so that if one gets banned, or someone takes your role, you can pick the other.

Most upper tier champions are contested picks or banned (Gragas, Hecarim), so go down a few notches. In this instance, it would be something like Volibear in the jungle. He's almost never banned, rarely picked, and still a very good choice. The same goes for champions like Sion and Malphite.

As the person below said, you could still main something off meta. I like to play Alistar top, and that's working out well for me. The idea is that you want to play something that's still strong and useful, but not something that's common enough to warrant a pick/ban. Skarner is actually a good top laner! Brand has some really good damage and cc, but he's not a common mid laner or support. Just take your pick!

Have a decent sized champion pool that you feel comfortable playing. Learn at least a couple champions for each role, that way you're not forced into playing a champion you're not comfortable with if your main(s) get picked or banned.

If you like the current FotM champions, play them when you can, but don't be a one trick pony.

For example, I love playing Sejuani, but she's banned in pretty much every game, so when I jungle I tend to play Nautilus, since he's rarely ever banned

Don't main an obvious permaban champ that ppl hate going against.

  1. Hey what you can do is main champs that can go many different roles fairly well likeMaokai . Maokai is great top lane and also is a decently strong jung. Also with certain teams you can even take him mid (with a high damage top/jung). Chogath Vladimir RekSai Nautilus are some more examples.

have a main and like 2 or so backups in case they get picked or banned

Hunter Skullywix6/15/2015, 8:49:16 PM1 votes

Main Diana > Ekko > Teemo there 3 champions that have similar build paths and if they get banned do what everyone else does pick Galio

LaceUp236/16/2015, 12:13:16 AM1 votes

Main a champ for EACH role. Try to make it a shitty champ so no one ever plays or bans them :D. Unless they get played in LCS, then everyone thinks they are magical and plays/bans them.

Cinephile 6/16/2015, 12:59:41 AM1 votes

You can't just main one champion. You should be able to play at least two champions in each role.

LittleBlast6/16/2015, 1:35:17 AM1 votes

Singed If they ban singed you know somethings up.

A Miss Fortune6/16/2015, 2:46:07 AM1 votes

Be like me and main MissFortune or Zyra then you'll literally never worry about the enemy team choosing your champ aside from a few rare cases or them getting banned.

DevildogKogg6/16/2015, 2:50:32 AM1 votes

Analyze the champ you want, and find champions that are similar to that champ (for example Aatrox= Tryndamere ) and have that champion to fall back on. Another good example is Xerath and Velkoz . 4 out of 120-somethin chance that I solved your problem lol yw

Zirzon6/16/2015, 3:38:19 AM1 votes

Either learn more champs to play well if you don't get your main, or play nothing but team builder.

Occams Raiser6/16/2015, 3:49:55 AM1 votes

Stop trying to main one champ when you know he has a high pick\ban rate. Learn him and 2 alternates for that position.

Zhou Ziyu6/16/2015, 4:00:09 AM1 votes

You could main a set of champions that have similar skill sets; this makes it a little easier to learn, and if they ban out your main, you have a couple of other champions to fall back on.

Frank3276/16/2015, 8:07:37 AM1 votes

Main one champ, but have some versatile and easy to play champs for when you don't get to play your main. For example:

Top: Cho Gath, Xin Zhao (, morgana) Jungle: Xin Zhao, Amumu (, Cho gath) Mid: Cho Gath, Morgana ADC: Sivir, ashe (maybe not the easiest, but they always have their utility) Support: Morgana, Janna

That's just seven champs you need to practice aside from your main before getting into ranked. And you don't need to be great with them, just know the basics and know what your optimal build path is.

If you like a champion, use him. I use Darius and rarely and i mean RARELY, someone bans him. if someone locks him in on enemy team, i get pissed af. You just gotta hope that LCS dont use em or ull see them banned quite often. ALways have 3 champs in a role. My best champ is Darius but i can do any role (except mid though).

Any advice?

Have more options.

I main Darius and Tryndamere top lane, but I can easily substitute Garen, Wukong,Cho, Yorick (no one ever bans Yorick and no one knows how to play against him), Singed, or Shen.

You can't rely on a single champion to carry you man. Having mains is fine, but don't rely on them completely.

Kãtãrinã6/15/2015, 3:51:05 PM1 votes

Main a non meta champion. Urgot/galio/Etc. Or main champions with low ban rates. MF currently has the lowest ban rate of .02% http://champion.gg/statistics/#?sortBy=general.banRate&order=ascend

Lugg6/17/2015, 8:40:09 AM1 votes

Look at the ban rates and pick someone who rarely gets banned. Simple enough. Also have a backup as well.

TurquoiseYoshi6/15/2015, 4:06:15 PM1 votes

Unless you use a champion in the top 5-10 of ban percentage, you won't get bans. It's also a good idea to have many backup champs if you don't get the right role/the champ is banned.

If having fun with a single champ is your top priority, you could just dodge whenever you can't get your champ and live with the consequences. If climbing the ladder is your top priority, then you'll have to be prepared with some degree of diversity rather than just a single champ as your focus.
