I hate DFG so much. Can I go without it on champions that build it?

Several champions that I enjoy playing (Ahri Katarina Syndra) build item 3128 and I absolutely hate it...

DFG feels so clunky to me. Idk if it is the animation, or range, or what but I absolutely hate it. I will use other on use items like zhonya, bork, randy's, all the other stuff. That stuff feels great and intuitive to use and I don't mind them at all. I actually enjoy using them. But DFG...holy shit this item is aids to me.

So is there a way to still play some of these DFG champions just as effectively without building DFG? I'm not saying "wah wah I can't use it" I am saying I hate using it that much. Would a penetration heavy build with lots of AP be just as effective? Like on Ahri I like to just crank the AP bonuses rather than go for some DFG combo that is practically impossible to execute without asking for death.

Anyone have any advice or similar frustrations with this item?

Ahri's natural True damage on her orb of deception coupled with % based HP damage makes it possible for her to heavily damage even tanks. The thing is, DFG can feel clunky because you have to cast an entire other ability to get the full effectiveness out of your combo. This can be really annoying on champions like Lebalnc, who want to be precise and as quick as possible. That's why I don't even bother building it on her, because that moment of time difference could mean landing your distortion and proccing your sigil, or completely missing it. DFG actually seems to be more effective on champions who aren't pressed for time on their nukes as much. Ahri seems to be one of those champs who tends to be pressed for time before you max her E. Although, DFG can be a good late-game item as you seem to get plenty of time with your charm if you react quick enough. The problem for some might be trying to apply a DFG in a teamfight with a bunch of people walking extremely close together... If you misclick by accident, it can really mess up the damage on your target. The requirement to land an entire other ability even if it is target-click is why I feel DFG seems so clunky. I usually try to avoid it as much as possible personally, and I do think you can still have a perfectly strong build without it. Mages aren't usually meant to blow up tanks anyway, and if you invest in additional armor Pen, then your poking can be more successful which actually might prove more valuable then simply having that additional burst damage.

IDK if that helped at all, but I personally think you can easily find alternatives. Void staff could prove to be just as useful, if not more useful because of all the magic pen you get from it.

I've been a Malphite main for a few months, now, and I used to hate DFG.

It was another clunky ability I had to target, and that East Coast ping we all know and love meant the extra second wasted on clicking was a second I couldn't follow up with Q or E or something.

Smartcast fixed that. Seriously. Use it.

Yes, you can definitely go without building it and it functions as a more situational item but if you're looking to instantly kill single targets, you definitely want to build it.

It's weird because it has to come first as part of your combo, and its range doesn't mesh well with the average champion's spells. Other items are reactive and are often designed to save your life, or you're a melee anyways and Cleave is just another part of your button-mash.

Don't worry, you're not the only one, I hate using it too.
