Malphite Support?

So I've seen a few Malph supps recently but not that many, however I have seen a bunch of people post things or comment about how he can be really good. Specifically how he shines during teamfight scenarios. I used to play malphite a lot when I mained jungle but now I've switched to a support main and have recently taken a likely particularly to the tankier supports. I like that Naught has become a meta support now as my jungle experience is able to shine through with him and it'd be nice if I could do the same with Malphite. Does anyone have 1. opinions on if he's worth trying as a viable support and if so 2. would he be strong-ish at all right now?

His ultimate is great and all, but it's kind of hard to find situations where he'd be better than Leona or Alistar. He usually runs out of mana if he's spamming Q for harass, and doesn't really have any threat in lane outside of it unless you're using E on people who walk on you. Not the worst thing in the world, but I think conventional supports would usually do the same thing but better.

He's meh. He's outclassed by other tank supports in lane, only adding a small amount of poke and his trade off for this is his ult.

Don't get me wrong, the ult is great and can work well in a teamfight, but so can Leona's, Alistar's, Thresh's, Blitz, Braum's... And they don't give up lane presence for it. The only reason I would personally pick him is if I knew I was going in with a Yasuo and my ADC knew that we were going for a farmy, "Let's chill at the tower" lane.

The few times I've come across a Malph support, he got a couple of hits in early with his Q, but after that and until 6, he was like a pinata for me, procing blue gold item and bandit whenever he showed up, very easy to bully. At 6, just had to let them push and keep poking the ADC, Malph didn't (and most likely won't) have the gold to do much damage, and outside of a slow and a knock up it isn't really too hard to deal with him. Hell, just save exhaust and the fight can turn around much easier than if the above listed tanks were there.

The reason Naut works well (in my experience) is that he acts similar to Leona and Thresh. He chains CC and is a disruptive monster, both of those points work without gold investment. Malphite doesn't have enough disruption in his kit to make it worth it to me, and again should only be picked if you know your team and you set up a certain comp, and even then you may be better off.

Short version: Malph is a 5/10, can work, wouldn't invest time into learning him as a support.

It can work. If you are going to try it make sure it's in games where the enemy team goes ham on picking AD based champions. Start with spell theif. It's a good Gp10 item that will make your Q hit harder and give you more mana. Don't upgrade it...just let it sit in your inventory until late game when you need the slot and sell it.

Not much else to say. Build a sight stone...then build to counter the enemy teams AD with items like Sunfire, FH, Tornmail, RO, IBG, Ect...

I've played Malphite support during my climb in ranked when I was forced into support. In the situation I do have to support I would either opt for Annie or Malphite. By no means do I mainn support, but I do main adc so the support role comes naturally if I do end up there. I made a post a while ago about Malphite support with great feedback.

During my hard climb I went 4-0 with it in ranked - whether it was sheer luck or proof the of the power of Malphite support is beyond me. I build standard items item 3097 (no upgrade EVER) item 2049 item 3190 item 3110 and possibly item 3001 except the game was usually over before I could grab it. Based on his kit he can counter attack speed based champions the hardest, so champions like MasterYi XinZhao Vayne Tryndamere will despise you in team fights.

edit: I would like to add that his lane presence to me feels much stronger than people give credit. In the situation of an all in he can Q and walk up to the adc/supp and be a MAJOR THREAT. It is all about getting in their face; you will be outclassed by almost any other support if you only sit back and poke with Q until lvl 6.

Its the inverse of Nunu nunu support.. your passive, your Q sustain (it drives any poke support insane). Hoenstly your passive is one of the best sustains in the game.

Q is a slow. W just makes you tanky and a great trading tool.

E is an AS drop to the adc when you stand close enough.

Your ult is much better than nunu ult. and it a great AOE knonk-up (about the same ap ratio on malph ult too.)

Watch your mana and use your passive just annoying in lane.
