I enjoy the Warriors video,

https://youtu.be/fmI_Ndrxy14?t=61

and especially the inclusion of Hoodie Summoner, a character in a hoodie who at a dramatic mid-chorus moment lowers his head and conjures a summoning sphere, transforming from a pro gamer in a sweatshirt into a Summoner of the League.

http://i.imgur.com/NTDsric.png "My strength falters. Quickly! An Elixir of Brilliance!" "You mean a lo-carb Monster?" "…yeah."

Presumably, this was an accident—the animation studio had finished its work before the kill order against Summoners came through the bureaucracy, and although apparently the "Nobody Gets To Have Fun Anymore" camp had enough sway to pull off the Great Retcon and delete the League of Legends from League of Legends, it seems they didn't have quite enough strength to convince Riot to pay to have the video redone on a rush basis to excise all traces of Summoners. (Indeed, there was even a somewhat anomalous post from Tryndamere himself that "We didn't delete Summoners", implying that they saw the backlash and came up with a backup plan to create some new story element that used the name "Summoners".) Or maybe it's simply a reflection of "you're still Summoners in the game", which was written during the Great Retcon as a somewhat derisive throwaway remark but has been repurposed as something of a rallying cry by members of the lore community. Whatever the case may be, this part of the video makes me pretty happy.

http://i.imgur.com/YbkQ3Ai.png "Hear ye and be warned: the Council decrees that I will jungle with Amumu." "Guard blue, lest all the powers of Runeterra array themselves against ye." "one sec fixing keybinds at fountain" "There may be no appeal!"

The whole video is loaded with "YEAH! NOW GO PLAY LEAGUE! WOOOO!" messaging, but for me, this little snippet is what really sends that message across.

Now I just need an oversized hoodie.

I feel I ought to add a mention of my thanks to members of the Narrative team, like Jaredan, who while writing lore that follows the company line of "no League, no Summoners" are also nonetheless supportive of community lore that explores these immersive story elements.

The fact that we're still considered "summoners" shows just how ill-conceived the retcon was. Why are we still summoners? Who or what are we summoning? Where? How?

None of these questions have answers.

Unless they manage to come up with something real fuckin' clever, my expectations for this game's lore will lie somewhere below the planet's mantle.

I'm working on a summoner cosplay just to stick it to the man.

I'm fine with the league gone. Every story shouldn't have the league involved.... Only thing I'm tripping over is the fact that they aren't producing ANY lore at all beside champ release lore. That one red tried to justify that by telling me why its being tied to champ release. Either way its still lazy and pretty novice for a company like this.

Where are people getting that summers have been retconned? I thought it was ONLY the institute.

Even after that infamous post, there are still a lot of marketing posts that refer to the players as "summoners" (even the last news report of the new champ rotation still uses the term "summoner" to describe players). I don't think Summoners are fully retconned, but rather being repurposed for something outside of the institute.

If Narrative wanted to go really 'meta' in the Grant Morrison sense they could claim that RuneTerra is a virtual dimension where conflicts are resolved through 'Summoners.' These summoners are those in our dimension who are invited to partake in the battles through machines that let them access virtual worlds. The enabler of this is an entity called 'Riot' who feeds off of the Summoners resources, but never takes too much from them or forces them to play.

That wasn't a lore video but it does show what summoner still is. They never removed that meaning of summoner and the retcon wasn't supposed to change it.

Summoners are still canon cause you have people that summon stuff (Azir Malzahar Yorick Bard ) and you have the figures shown at Summoners Rift. I really dont think they would have redone that map and not give it some story significance like the Howling Abyss has. Remember, only very recently had the map came out of the beta testing and they said they will add more stuff to it in future patches, so its only time until we get some more backstory about it (probably the Protectorate and Magelord sides that are summoners from Aatroxes lore).
