@RiotGypsy Why I feel Jhin gives off an underwhelming character
When the first teaser for Jhin (Zed getting shot) was first released, I thought: perhaps this new champ will be interesting. Then the next day the 3 other teasers were leaked and I was beside myself trying to piece it together. It just did not make sense, what was obvious though was they were being targeted.
Eventually all 4 teasers launched and I still did not understand how any of them would link to this new champ. That being said I just kind of said to myself that perhaps he just wants to kill them because they were "lacking" (someone else made a very great explanation of this on Reddit, too lazy to look it up though.) When the video finally came out, I was still of the impression that the visual noise that was cluttered in the video would somehow resonate with the previous 4 teasers and would give us a glimpse of what Jhin's kit would eventually feel like.
And then he gets released and all I said to myself was: Yep, he didn't makes sense at all with all the teasers. They only resonated with a portion of what you were trying to sell to us. He didn't even feel like a sniper to me until after the reveal showed his ult. Maybe this is why a lot of people don't really seem as excited as others for him because he feels detached. The character build-up wasn't as strong as say Azir's release or Kalista's.
I think Jhin's kit is unique but he was undersold by how his reveal was handled. It seems he has an enmity with both Shen and Zed but instead of focusing on it for example, the teasers focused too much on abstract things. I get that he's supposed to be a psycho but getting your players into his head doesn't really equate to us empathizing with him. I just wanna voice how this could have been handled better. A bit more background as to why he chose those 4 champs for the teasers would have been more flavorful. Perhaps this was again another rushed launch.
I just hope future videos are more engaging not just thematically but also lore-wise. The Burning Tides event did not have a video but it pretty much delivered quality content. I just hope such a quality would not be too erratic especially for characters with so much potential.
My other minor gripes:
Why is Jhin composed of so many Hextech parts? Did he go on a stint at Zaun? I don't get the vibe that he is Ionian, he feels more like someone Zaun would spit out or even Demacia or Noxus. His 3 guns forming 1 big gun feels tame after we got Jinx :( I'm just not sold, especially with the design (shoulder thing) after I looked at it closer with LoLKing's model viewer. I saw that video interview with RiotGypsy and I can understand why the ult was a big push for making this champion, it just feels like he's a product of too much back-and-forth between disciplines that he never really coalesced into this coherent portrait. I feel like too many brushstrokes blurred together and everything just went gray.
