What's the Point of a Fan Art Showcase...

If you

A: Take an extremely higher amount of digital art compared to traditional

and

B: Only accept "good" art

If we are voting for the best pieces anyways, why not let artists who may not be the most experienced or have a $500 tablet still contribute?

I was really excited when seeing this because I thought that, even though I was a traditional artist myself, maybe I could contribute. It feels shitty to send in something you're proud of and be turned down because it wasn't made on a screen or because it isn't "good enough", and every single piece is something insanely good that you are nowhere near able to create.

If you're going to open something up to the community to share works of art then how about letting everyone have a chance to contribute.

Give the people who aren't god-like with a tablet a chance to feel good about what they created, even if it isn't "the best" by your standards.

You're only showcasing the highest quality art, so stop advertising it as a "fanart showcase" if you won't even consider "below average" fan art made for you.

Limit how many a person can send at a time. Maybe every month or so, refresh the showcase and allow everyone to submit a different piece. Like a submission of your best piece every month when the showcase starts again.

Not everyone in the community is the best artist, but some of these people still desperately want to contribute and be part of something like this. It'd be nice if Riot could do something for them, instead of showcasing artists who already have followers, make commissions, or are known in places like Deviant Art

The thing is that with millions of players,there'd be easily millions of fan arts every month,even with such a system.

I mean I understand your point here,it really sucks if you drew a good picture and get turned down(it sounds a lot like this happened to you),but there are some good reasons for doing that.

Who's feelings are more hurt, guy A who spent a decade perfecting his craft, saved up to invest further into and then made some fan art, or guy B who did none of that and just wants the attention?

B's feelings are more hurt because B is a pussy.

The whole picking good quality art is a very subjective thing

But I think they should get a nice balance of Digital and traditional drawn art, there really isn't an excuse for the favoritism for digital outside of "It's easier to get"

When Au Sol's community creations came out, I had submitted my picture to the boards a week and a half in advance hoping it'd be included. It got some feedback and upvotes. Well, it wasn't included, but that isn't really what got me upset. It was more that, his entire community creations page was digital works. When I asked about it and pointed out that there were no traditional pieces, a Rioter tried to tell me that its "hard to get a balance".

I went to DeviantArt (which all of their digital pieces that they picked are from) and in less than 5 minutes came out with a good amount of traditional pieces, some really really good. Way better than I could make.

They say they have a hard time finding it, when really it's pretty easy especially when DeviantArt actually allows you to search things up by medium type. They just prefer digital, and that's sad. Every type of medium in my opinion should get some love, including stuff like sculpture or cosplay which I haven't seen much of either.

I would guess that they also pick what they think the majority of people would like. Of course, nobody can reliably predict what the people will like. But yeah, I think they could include some traditional pieces as well.

Art is subjective people either like it or they don't unfortunately. If it makes you feel better i like writing short stories and have tried to submit a few to publishers and I've had both of them rejected lol. Never say that you are "bad" or "not good enough" at art be positive and say to yourself that you will become much greater. I wouldn't worry about not being on the fan showcase just keep drawing what you like and eventually you will gain recognition as a bi-product of your enjoyment. I don't work at riot or understand how this sort of community management goes, I'm just writing to say that you are not "below average" and with time you will become "god-like" too, all you gotta do is be positive and relax.

When such things get rejected, make sure to respect others opinions also, and to ask them about what they disliked, liked, and didn't really even notice about art (Story, painting, etc.)

I'm a casual and the point of that fanart thing is kinda pointless.

But I guess a place to hold the professional quality art is probably what they strive for anyways.

I mean, regardless, it's still Fanart, and it's still being showed, so "Fanart Showcase" in literal terms, is correct.

Yeah, I kinda like the whole judgement based on quality. If I'm on Riot's site scrolling through fan art I really only wanna see really nice quality things. This is coming from an art consumer. Letting users upload their own art without any sort of vetting process is ridiculous: you're asking for a cess pit of Rule 34 and unrelated nonsense. So they really have to have a vetting process. And if they have to have a vetting process, why not let the professionally trained artist's who are vetting the work decide whether it's of quality as well? I feel for you man, rejection really sucks. But you should see it as an opportunity to strive to get better and maybe even adapt to a changing medium as opposed to getting pissed off and worrying that you aren't good enough. If art's really important to you, you'll find a way to make that extra $500 to buy that tablet. Just keep getting better, mate. I can't wait to see your art someday!

When did I blame tablet artists for anything?

This doesn't really have much to do with my art, I only used myself as an example because I don't know anyone else's stories with trying to get traditional art in.

I'm saying, there is an extremely high amount of digital with no traditional pieces, and I am SURE there are lots of traditional artists submitting their stuff. Riot just prefers digital and has shown that in the past.

It's probably been chosen by literally 1 or 2 people who spend 1 hour a month picking these things... so don't take it personally. I doubt it's a company decision to keep traditional art out and it's just those people's preferences. And to be honest ... I don't really care about the fanart showcase. What it mainly does it remind me to go to deviantart and pixiv and look for stuff there! I'm sure it has that effect on a lot of people, so it works out for underexposed artists in the end, if you think about it!

I don't think I'm entitled to anything, and as a community member, and someone who has played the game for a while, I have every right to give feedback and say what I think. That's the whole purpose of the boards.

And they even ASKED for feedback and suggestions on the fan art showcase.
