It seems like Hecarim was the real cause of the Ruination. He killed Kalista which resulted in the Ruined king getting his hands on the resurrection spell, he fragmented the island and caused strife and unrest by his mass killings, and led the king to the guardians themselves.

Pretty much, although it was indirectly Kalista's fault that he found his place in the King's confidence as she brought him into the kingdom's service and accidentally caused the incident that led to the Queen's death, the King's descent into madness and left Hecarim in a position where he could abuse his power and influence.
