As a writer...

The fact that I find myself having to look up words and their meanings to understand some of the descriptive language in Shadow and Fortune is making me giddy. I love learning new descriptive words, and these things are packed full of it. Loving it.

It's amazing from a storytelling perspective as well. It's beautifully written, well-paced, and continuously intriguing. I'm constantly excited to see what comes next.

Minor question on that note: anybody know what a gun'dola is? "The docks and Rat Town were smothered beneath the Black Mist, and even the web of gun’dolas was barely visible. "

Damn it I'm not trying to be smarter from reading. I want Michael Bay type of novels.

If you don't mind my asking, what words did you have to look up? (I'm an aspiring writer as well, so it's just fun to know what words I should possibly avoid)

McNeil is a writing genius in my opinion. You should check out his Warhammer stuff, incredible.

I find myself enjoying the usage of some of the more rare words but I think Riot almost does it too often in the stories, almost like they are trying to force bigger words into every other sentence and it occasionally interrupts the flow of the story.

I'm not even a native english speaker so... it's >_< but I try to keep going as some words I can understand from the context, kind of a bummer having to stop the flow to search them up tho :P

Indeed. While the story itself might be shallow, the narrative is actually excellent and fun to follow. The language is pleasingly colorful and fits the atmosphere of the setting. Now if only the characters weren't as primitive as they are...
