The Good and Bad: Kat's New Splash

I've had some outspoken opinions on some of the new splash arts before. I thought the new Trist splash was absolutely terrible, mostly because she looked creepy and alien and deformed, like someone trying to realistically render a cartoon character. Her eyes were too big and she looked like a fuzzy blue fish. But, this is supposed to be about Katarina's new splash art, currently up on the PBE. Apparently the artist responsible, according to the Internet, is the same individual responsible for the wonky, bucktooth, distorted Siver splash that still exists in the client.

So, what's wrong with Kat?

Well, for starters, immediately, what is it we're supposed to be looking at here? I mean, it's Katarina, and dudes are dying around her, sure, but, what even IS that? The image is so distorted with action and foreshortening it's hard to identify what, exactly, she's supposed to be doing. The glowing effects are also red, and she looks like she's stepping out of a portal of some kind. If that's supposed to be Shunpo, her only portal-like ability, the artist got it wrong. Shunpo is blue, as are its effects, as we've seen several times in Riot's cinematics, and ingame. The only one of her abilities that's red, to the best of my knowledge, is her W, Sinister Steel. And that doesn't look like its being displayed here. if it is, it's being obscured by the distortion.

Wasn't Riot's design philosophy focused on "readability" and "clarity"? This art is not clear on what's going on.

Is it Shunpo? Is is Sinister Steel? Is it both?

And the readability is also off on what she's doing in general. Even if Sinister Steel or Shunpo aren't being used, people are dying around her, and she just looks like she's running ahead. There's a disconnect from what's happening in the scene around her. The image suggests motion, and quick and deadly motion at that, but what she's done or how she's done it isn't shown or suggested to the viewer in a meaningful way. The image just "looks cool" and makes no sense beyond that. And, honestly, it doesn't really look that cool. The colors seem off (her hair is highlighted with pink instead of red or orange from the lighting effects?) and ultimately her distorted body does more to put off the viewer than draw them in. This suffers in a lot of the same ways as the Sivir Splash does.

Yes, it's an interesting pose, but it makes no sense and has poor readability as to what is going on. The blade dominates the upper left of the frame, which is cool, and we can readily see her tattoo, her scar, and her eyes, but her eyes are subdued and faded. Compared to everything else going on, your glance is drawn anywhere but her eyes, and when you DO look at them, they look faded into the background of her face, and just a little hard to distinguish. The eyes are the window into who Katarina is when you look at her face, and when you look at them, you don't really get a feeling from them. Her face is too long, and while I like the "tougher" look that's been used here, that really needs to change. All the action is down by her waist and legs, and her main leg is warped by the effects going on.

It sacrifices clarity for appearance and dynamic action, and I don't think that's a good concept as far as demonstrating what a champion can do, or what they're about. Now, don't get me wrong. The contrast of light and dark, and the way in which the art was painted looks very good, and is far superior to a lot of splash arts currently in the game. That's a marked improvement. And, I understand Riot wants to move away from using the Chinese placeholder artwork and use their own, which is cool. Other splashes have looked good, like Gnar's or Azir's, Xerath's, and even the most recent Warring Kingdoms Katarina looked pretty solid, in my own opinion.

But this splash honestly just comes across as poorly finished. It looks far too distorted, confused, and unsure of what is going on. It doesn't flow, and has poor readability, and even the skills being highlighted in the splash are questionable. We can't tell exactly what's going on, and it looks more confusing than interesting.

So, that's my take for feedback. Hopefully, it'll be taken into consideration.

ADDENDUM: I should make note that ingame, Shunpo is, in fact, a red flash, while in every recent cinematic it's been portrayed as blue. So, there seems to be a disconnect with consistency on Riot's part. And, for that matter, I think the art, overall, is an improvement, but ti still has faults that prevent it from really hitting the mark, I feel. But they could be improved upon and the art used more or less as is with some changes.

I just feel like riot's really overdoing the action poses in all of their recent splashes. They seem to have a massive hard-on for uncomfortable looking poses and weird bends and other obscurities. I'd really appreciate it if we could get more natural looking poses instead of all of these running, bending, tumbling and diving away from explosions.

I feel like Leona's and Rek'sai's current splashes are good examples of how splashes should look. Yes some would argue that they're more boring but i feel like that's a worth while trade if it means we don't have to deal with broken spines and disproportionate limbs.

This is the best description of the new splash I've seen, and hits some points I agree with. I hate all the silly posts concerned about her level of attractiveness (which is subjective, anyway). You did a good job highlighting the other problems with the action and distortion in the shot, which I absolutely agree with.

Good points. Her hair is definitely too pink at the moment - I understand that it was drawn like that because of the lighting but the effect is overdone. Agreed with the face looking faded because of the emphasis on the forearm, in general maybe the whole thing could use a bit more contrast. It cookd look more like this

About the action, based on the distortion on her leg, the movement of her hair, the soldiers and the motion arc, she's clearly spinning. Coupled that with the portal, I understood it as the classic Shunpo-Sinister steel combo, i.e. she's already spinning mid shunpo.

I still consider this an improvement over the current - the current is by no menas bad but it definitely doesn't fit the new style of all the new splashes.

Riot, Katarinas face should look similar to this Katarina not this Alistar

Der Lindwurm2/12/2015, 11:03:52 PM7 votes

Bad: The hips are weird and way too bony. And what's wrong with natural redheads? Why all the reddish pink dye? Just to match the shunpo flash? Worth?

Good: Everything else. I never really thought of Kat as having a particularly high opinion of herself in terms of her looks, and I always thought Garen's attraction to her probably had very little if anything to do with her looks. Cute and sassy like she was portrayed in A Twist of Fate really doesn't go with her character. Cold, grim, and determined suits her much better and I'd actually say this is very much in alignment with the way she looked in A New Dawn. It goes a bit further in getting away from the round-faced Disney princess look, but I have no problem with that. Not in Kat's case, anyway.

Well that certainly explains a fucking lot. That stupid splash made me stop playing Sivir. All I could ever see in that thing was the stupid bucktooth.

This splash is not nearly as bad though, I think some minor tweaks can make it redeemable.

Jamnon2/13/2015, 3:47:42 AM6 votes

It isnt even an interesting pose.

It is so distorted and dispreportional that it is literally distracting and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This is just as bad as Sivir's new pose.

Rune Ocarina2/12/2015, 10:03:01 PM6 votes

My god, your mention of bucktoothed Sivir made me go back to her splash and bust out laughing uncontrollably. I will not ever be able to unsee that now.

If Leona doesn't get one of these "action" poses in her future splash update I'm going to call favoritism at Riot now willing to take the chance to ruin her like they have to all these other female champs who's splash arts I currently don't appreciate.

WHat. Is. Wrong with her face.

Sol Katti2/12/2015, 10:48:27 PM5 votes

I dont have problem with her splash art except the face. That in not Kat anymore she was an cute/beautiful assassin her face & hair should be like this http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140802092827/leagueoflegends/images/5/57/Katarina_New_Dawn_concept_1.jpg

The good: cool pose and setting.

The bad: Katarina looks way too distorted.

The ugly: yes, this splash art is ugly as heck.

why does every new splash have to be super actiony? like irelia is one of the few old champions with her original splash, and you would never see something like that today

Grand Viper2/13/2015, 10:50:40 AM3 votes

You forgot "the Ugly". Lemme rectify that for you: Urgot

With that out of the way, what actually gets to me most is that Katarina is essentially magically teleporting. Yeah, I know, that's me being a stickler, and she's done it in one cinematic (Didn't do it in New Dawn iirc), but it's something that is irking. I mean, she's a resourceless champion, that means 0 mana being used. I thought she was just that damn good, that fast that she didn't need magical augmentation to go from point A to point B, while her requiring AP is due to being an early release champion and a full AD burst assassin was not an idea at the time.

Meanwhile you have pretty much every single other teleportation skill in the game requiring a mana cost, since it is a purely magical ability, from Kassadin to Ezreal to Talon (Who uses mana to go invisible) or you have your ninjas who use Ki and are meant to have some sort of limitation (Arguable as it is, it is at least a resource), and you can just rattle them off, not one other teleporter in the game is resourceless. So why does Katarina teleport about through actual portals ala Kassadin when Kassadin's job should be that?

Suppose I should say something about the splash's construction.

Pft, well, anything that can be said about it has been said about it. I uh, don't have much to argue on those points. Yeap.

My main complaint with this is the same one I had for the new Janna splash art. Man-face...

Lol that has absolutely nothing to do with Splash Art.

This splash art is nasty. I am happy that i have owned Warring Kingdoms Kat, so i will not need to look at this... Katarina what they have done to you, my lady :(

CaptnJakSparrow2/13/2015, 5:33:03 AM2 votes

The new and improved Katarina . . . man face with a broken leg, and for some reason doing the splits in mid air. I like how they always try to make some hard ass looking splash arts for champions they're about to gut :/.

"quick buy teh legendary skins and stuff fast." We'll just be making her unviable in a few weeks ;).

This seems to be a recurring theme.

And, honestly, it doesn't really look that cool.

Agreed. To me, wonky poses/anatomy are almost always too egregious for the "WOW, STUFF IS HAPPENING!!11one!" effect to make up for it.

Dominick Destine2/13/2015, 9:18:33 PM2 votes

She looks ugly as hell in the new splash.
