Why are stealth lore updates completely changing (and arguably ruining) characters?
I just learned that at some point Orianna's lore has completely changed who her character is. She used to be a clockwork automaton built in the image of her creator's dead daughter, but now she was a sick girl who had her organs removed one by one until no organic material was left.
Before even discussing whether or not the new story is "better" than the old one, there is a fundamental and undeniable truth that it is a different one for a character that has been a staple of this game for over five years, and it was changed with little to no notification to the players. Most older players probably don't realize that she is a fundamentally different person now and I don't know why the writing team thinks that could be a good idea.
I know Riot has also done this with Dr. Mundo (By the way, Mundo's new lore is unquestionably terrible, please revert it back to the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde inspired story) and Trundle. Trundle actually had a lot of pomp and circumstance with it being part of his champion relaunch with the Freljord event, and I thought Riot learned from that event that it is a phenomenally stupid idea to change the story of an established character with its own fanbase (and Trundle was a way less popular character than Orianna).
Players don't check the lore sections very often, so these changes fly under the radar for a while, but that doesn't mean players don't know the old lores and don't have a certain image of the character based on that lore.
Also, I do think Orianna's old lore was better. Her visual design and animations look like she was designed and constructed all at once as opposed to a number of piecemeal surgeries to fill her with imitation organs. The large turnkey on her back, the rotating dress, neither of those make any sense under the new lore.
