Let's talk about Annie
Alright, First, let me say that the Video was well-made, I will not deny that. My problems with it stems solely from how it changes Annie's character and backstory.
Annie was always a favorite of mine. She's a lot of players first mage/support character, and for very good reason. She is also one of the faces of the game, along with Ryze, Katrina, and Garen. While Annie was never a major player in lore-terms, she was implied to be a very powerful mage as a child, and as she grew older, she would become a very powerful mage, maybe on the same level as Ryze.
Now, while I like the video, I don't think it is a good fit for Annie. It's a good fit for a foil to Annie, but not for the little Pyromaniac we know and love. The story reminds me of Frozen, the X-Men, and Carrie.
To me, Annie was always more mature then she let on; yeah she was cute, but she's smarter than she looks and knows how dangerous her own powers where. She's still a kid, which is why she uses her powers to entrain herself, but was smart enough to not light the forest on fire. She had control of her powers and was so talented in their use she turned a bear that was on fire into her toy/servant Tibbers.
New Annie is more of a woobie-ish character. Her powers were nothing but a hindrance in her life. Her father had faith in her, her sister seems to have had a decent relationship, but her mother doesn't approve that her daughter is a witch. Annie's powers lead to her father's death, her mother hating her, and she saw her sister float down a stream and die/ become champion fodder. And she kills her mother at the end of it. It's heart-wrenching, but at the same time, this doesn't fit Annie.
Annie's current in-game lines show off a cutesy vibe with a dark implication underneath it. She's a very fun-loving, and loves setting things on fire. These don't fit with the new characterization, unless you take the interpretation that Annie went insane from the sheer trauma she has suffered, which is a valid interpretation.
I have this idea is that this is how Demacia sees Annie; i mean think about it, this child has magical powers which has brought nothing but pain and misery to both herself and to her family, and Demacia sees magic as inherently evil.
Now, personally, I would have used this backstory for a foil to Annie. Annie, in her old lore, had parents who raised her with her powers, magic was normal for her and was accepted by and nurtured by her community. Keeping this character just from the video, she would continually fail to control her powers, growing envious of the normal people around her. Annie has the life she wants, and she would hate her for it.
Anyways, what are your thoughts on it. I do think that the video was good, but i think riot needs to release updates like this and the Vaarus complete updates at the same time. It's honestly starting to become bizarre.
