@Riot - Garen sprang to his feet and unsheathed his sword...

Okay, cool story and all, but...HOW?

Do you have any idea how huge that sword is? I mean, yeah, it would suck to have to carry around a blade that size all the time, but "realistically", that's exactly what you'd have to do, unless you could come up with some kind of fancy harness or a "blade hammock" that isn't really a sheath. Garen's arm could not possibly extend far enough to unsheathe a blade of that size if it was at all sheathed in the same manner as your typical sword sheath. The mechanical limitations of a human body, yes even one as big and awesome as Garen's, prevent you from pulling a blade that long out of a sheath on your back, and probably even on your side or hip.

So, I'd love an explanation on this.

Or maybe an illustration of said sheath to explain how this feat is possible.

That could certainly be possible.

However, a sheath is specifically a case for a blade of some kind, while a scabbard is more like what's been pictured above, which is a sort leather sort of thing.

I'm fairly certain that the author of the Demacian stories should be familiar with those differences, so I'm still curious as to how the sheath, if it is that, functions for Garen. Or, if the author just wrote it without really thinking of the logistics.

each time Garen unsheathes his sword he rips the sheathe apart, his fellow soldiers just replace it when he isn't looking. when on the summoners rift the job is given to the caster minions.

Maybe Garen is going into competition with Ryze for amount of reworks?

Guys, you are totally right, this passage doesn't make sense, Garen's sword doesn't make sense, etc.

But come on now, look at 90% of the designs in this game. Do you think Riot knows or cares an iota about real weapons? The writer just thought it sounded cool and didn't bother to research how it works. That's pretty par for the course with this game.

The stories also mention Garen using a shield.

Garen never uses a shield because he wields a greatsword.

Maybe it sheathes/unsheathes horizontally, instead of vertically? As in, he reaches back and pulls the hilt sideways rather than upward from its holster. Perhaps it's designed for that sort of thing somehow.
