Bandle City - Let's talk before Narrative retcons everything

http://i.imgur.com/zt0HOIW.png

I wrote another thread on this a while back. I thought I'd set up another.

Some people complain that Narrative "isn't doing anything." In a way, I hope they're right. My impression, though, is that right now Narrative is furiously working in secret on the next wave of retcons. I have a strong suspicion that Bandle City is one of their next targets.

Narrative has essentially said that, while they might come by and talk about their new material after it's released and locked in, they're not interested in following the Riot model of community engagement—discussing possible changes with the community early enough in the design process for community feedback to make a difference. The most we've wrangled out of them are some noncommittal remarks that they might sometimes read the boards and maybe sort of think about what we say.

The Bandle City rewrite might already be finished. They might have already spent money on fancy visuals and animations. It might be too late for anything we say here to matter. On the flip side, it might be that nobody's even working on Bandle City right now, and whatever we say here will go unnoticed because there's no development process into which it could be incorporated. But maybe, just maybe, we're in that Goldilocks zone, where people have started planning their retcons to Bandle City but are still in an early drafting stage.

So, assuming that's the case—what are people expecting Narrative to do? What are they dreading that Narrative will do? If you had five minutes with Narrative to talk about Bandle City, what would you ask them to keep? What are the most important parts of Bandle City's community lore that you'd like whatever rewrite they do to remain backwards-compatible with?

Here are some elements of Bandle City's lore that I think are important.

  • Yordles are adorable, but also kind of weird and insular.
  • Yordles have an extremely strong sense of community and loyalty to kin.
  • Yordles have a tendency toward going crazy, for good or ill. A fairly reliable way to accomplish this is to deprive a yordle of companionship. (See: Veigar, Teemo, possibly Lulu.)
  • The Mothership. I think it's funny, and kind of intriguing, that yordles are basically hamster-cats who worship a spaceship. It's cute, but also kind of weird, which is (I think) the essential yordle mix.
  • The Mothership also gives yordles the potential for slightly darker story elements. If the Mothership tells them to do something, or they think that it has, they'll set upon the task with religious zeal. Treaties with other nations and human norms are irrelevant.
  • Yordles love cupcakes.
  • Bandle City's magic is mostly techmaturgical in nature.
  • Bandle City has a mostly-friendly rivalry with Piltover. Some, like Rumble, aren't at all happy with yordles being the zany sidekicks of the Piltovians. Most, however, see Piltover as an important ally, and don't have a problem with clever yordles going to Piltover to study.

I think it's good to have a light-hearted faction. Bandle City's cartoony, cutesy style is a nice complement to the grittier stuff. Still, the Mothership and related elements give yordles some more serious themes; yordles can be downright xenophobic, and every so often they'll set out on some insane path because they believe the Mothership has commanded it.

Here are the changes that I most dread from Narrative.

  • Removing the Mothership would make Bandle City's lore less "weird" and "derpy", and also much less interesting. It'd move them more toward generic "adorable fuzzball" territory. That would be in line with Narrative's overall tack, though, which is to overcompensate for the charming derpiness of traditional LoL lore and replace it with over-polished stock fantasy material.
  • I think they'll likewise drop the "Teemo is a violent sociopath" angle, and just make him a heroic yordle adventurer who fights for his friends. Again, less funny, less interesting, more generic.
  • I don't know what they're going to do to Veigar. I try not to think about it; a cupcake can only take so much stress. Suffice it to say that if they change his background from "cute fuzzball who went crazy after Noxians deprived him of snuggles", I'll be very unhappy. That's like the best background in this whole game.
  • If Narrative continues its trend of isolating the factions from one another, they might drop the Piltover relationship entirely, and have yordles just live off on their own little island. I really object to this fragmentary approach to Runeterra.

Lore is not dead.

The League of Legends Lore is not dead, as long as we don't let it die. it is in the hands of the fans now. as long as threads like this keep popping up and we keep discussing them, the lore CANNOT die! with the retcon announcement, Riot has officially given up on lore, but that doesn't mean we have to. Thank you SO MUCH for starting these discussions. Never stop, dude.

We already know the narrative team will be removing the Mothership because they "don't like the concept behind it". Which is sad because it's really the most interesting part about the Yordles as a whole.

From what we know, the Mothership isn't of Yordle make; it was sitting there for thousands of years, long before the species settled down and founded Bandle City around it. We don't know whether it's an ancient relic from another race inhabiting Runeterra or if it's of extraterrestrial make. I don't think any of that is important either, what's important is that Yordles worship this giant alien spaceship, kinda like how Egyptians in Stargate worshiped aliens except these aliens are long gone.

They are essentially Valoran's original techno-cult. Victor better start working on those trademark patents before they sue.

I also think it does reflect nicely in their champions, in that most of them are this oddball mixture of high-tech and tribal. I think Teemo represents the missing link much better than Gnar in that regard, in that he is likely the original pre-Bandle City form of Yordle culture - a hunter-gatherer whose "tech" is whatever he improvises into existence while in the wilds, not what he can manufacture in factories in advance. It also neatly reflects in Tristana now that her visual update got ripped from Aurin in WildStar, who are forest-dwelling squirrel-people whose respect for nature is only comparable to their fondness for blaster gunfire.

Removing the Mothership is pretty much removing the evolutionary link in Yordle culture that explains how they got from Gnar and Teemo to Rumble and Heimerdinger, so it makes me sad that the narrative team wants to get rid of it.

Bandle City is...weird. Like, what do we know about Bandle City? The other city states at least can be summarized pretty quickly. Demacia is Light, Noxus is Darkness, Bilgewater is Pirates, Shadow Isles is Spooky/Undead. But we never hear much about Bandle City. We know most other city states have at least some Yordle population, at least Piltover does, and Poppy might live in Demacia, and definitely has good relations at least, but...what the hell is Bandle City? I think the biggest blanks in it are:

Looks: We have pictures of Demacia, Noxus, etc. I don't think we've ever seen Bandle City. We hear about the dark alleys of Noxus and the toxic sewers of Zaun, but nothing about Bandle City. I guess the best place to look would be in Teemo or Rumble's Lore, but there doesn't seem to be anything in there.

Geography: This sort of ties into Looks I guess? Bandle City seems to be separated from the majority of Valoran's "mainland" via a mountain range, at least on the most current map we have.

Government: Demacia has a king. Freljord has 3 potential queens. Noxus has a High Council. What does Bandle City have? Is it all about worshipping their giant spaceship? Is there a High Priest of Spaceships? (Sorta like the Cult of the Atom from Fallout?) Or is there a more conventional government in place?

Technology: I know this is scattershot all over the place in League, even within the same city states. Urgot has a chemical grenade launcher, energy shield, and missles, and Darius runs around with an axe. But champions like Heimerdinger and Rumble point to a more mechanical sort of technological focus in Bandle City. Then again, Teemo uses a wooden tube and mushrooms.

I think it would be interesting to hear a little more about one of League's most oft ignored city states.

What I fear the most about them possibly changing Bandle City is that they might just might make them all silly natured. Which is not bad bad but the thing with Yordles is that sure they are cute but as well they aren't something to scoff at. When I saw the Trist update i was still holding my breath for her VO, if they made her sounds like a little kid I was going to flip. Lucky for me and my very flippable table they made Trist kinda have this more adult voice while still keeping her in your face attitude. The Mothership has to stay, that is something I can not see in Bandle City, there are so many questions surrounding it such as what is it, why is it here, or is that were Yordles came from?

If I was to tell Riot what Bandle should be like I would say look at Heimerdinger and Rumble

These 2 Yordles just show what Bandle City and all other Yorldes should follow. Clever, funny, outrages looks but at the same time being serious and committed. I mean just look at all the Yourdles, you can identify each Yordle Champion because of their unique attitude. Even though they all share the same type of character, outrages but serious.

This could just be me, and it probably is really, but there is so many things that can go wrong with if Riot decides to remove one aspect of Bandle City. But if Trists' update is anything to go off of what they have planed for Bandle, I still have hope.

  • Yordles have a tendency to be weird and quirky. They also are vulnerable to, well, lose normal logic. Like Veigar and Lulu, but also Teemo. I love this part of them.
  • They are a chaotic unorganized bunch. The mothership is their main (and only?) uniting factor. They love community and kin, but actually doing something as a community... (It's been a while, but I believe I read this somewhere.)
  • They look cute and nice and like huggable little furballs. They have a long history defending their city from the ruthless jungle.

But Riot is probably going to retcon Teemos mental issues, Veigars noble goal (just keep his evil means so he is a simple understandable villain) and if they feel like it, remove the mothership.

I think Trist's VU actually tells us stuff about the future of yordle champs. I've noticed that they've tried to make connections between the old yordle species(Gnar) and the recent generations(Trist) with the big ears. But just imo I don't like Tristana's new walking style. It just lost the connection between her cannon. Her steps are just too light even with her cannon which seem to weigh tons. She also lost her yordle-like body. And she's too purple I guess they tried to erase the Megling species, but well. I don't like that idea too much. They should keep the original champs like they were (just keep care of them) and continue to create new champs that fit their idea.

Since lore in of itself doesn't actually affect the game: League of Legends, I think Rito is going to go "We feel restricted!" and retcon virtually every thing to break down the cool facets of the lore so they're either generic archetypes or irrelevant to the rest of the community.

I mean, who cares if Teemo is the devil or not!? Doesn't affect Garen from killing him. There's certainly no new maps, animations, dialogue, etc based on the individual aspects of each champion or their race/nation as a whole.

And IF Rito actually does that, Riot has unofficially stated time and time and time again that each and every map or major addition will be treated as a new game entirely. Which means a 3 month harp on the Shurima event and Ascension, and then "What's a 'Shurima'?" attitude until the next major "lore" event/retcon. But, remember they will always have support for the Rift and Ranked. New additions are treated like Dominion (e.g. told to screw off).

We have what...12 Yordles in league?

Amumu- Jungle Corki - ADC Gnar - Top Heimer - Top/Mid Kennen - Top/Mid Lulu - Top/Mid/Support Poppy - Top Rumble - Top Teemo - Top Tristana - ADC Veigar - Mid Ziggs - Mid

We have one jungle and one support. If they take away Amumu to being a human child and not a yordle...then we have no jungle. When are we going to get a true yordle jungler and support...I WANT MY FULL YORDLE TEAM!

I would like to know if they're actually some evil Yordles(unlike Veigar) That many actually would consider a threat

I particularly like the diversity of cute champs that bandle brings (other than teem/ Satan). They are these cute fluffballs that are very unique in that they are this bright happy community living like a big family. They mostly live bright lives with some exceptions ( Teemo ). They are those people living in happy land while the rest of the world is hell. Unlike some, I think the mothership isn't as important to the yordles to the point where they worship it, but I think of it as a sort of mystery somewhere in their past. They look to it as a motivation to get to greater things and figure out its meaning.
