An idea that would be easy to implement and would VASTLY increase exposure and depth to lore

Why don't we have more quests? People will say hurr durr they impact balance, but it would be VERY small. As long as it matters a teensy bit, I think Iit would be cool. For example, if Lucian is against a shadow isles character and he kills them X amount of times, he gets a bonus 200 gold. ATM because they are sooo focused on balance, the only quests are super small (like zilean gets 10 extra gold from killing volibear, or the khazix rengar thing). Honestly, there are only two reasons NOT to do this

1 - Riot is lazy and doesnt want to take like a day to code this in (no new animations or kit changes, just some bonus golds or stats and maybe a quote, for big rialries like lucian and thresh and sion jarvan put a little extra effort)

2 - they are SO concerned about balance that they wont even make small changes

Off the top of my head, I can list (and vice versa):

Kass vs void champs

Sion vs jarvan or Galio

Garen vs kat

Darius and draven get a small bonus from being on the same team and assiting each other

Zed and syndra vs kennen, shen, and akali

Sej, voli, udyr vs Ashe trynd and braum vs liss and trundle

Trynd vs aatrox

lucian vs SI champions

etc etc etc

Upvote if you think this is a good idea, maybe a Rioter will see this (Bio im counting on you!)

You rang?

I think there's been a few things that sort of touch on this, referred to as hidden passives:

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Easter_eggs/Hidden_Passive

In that list you'll find little treats for Vi/Caitlyn vs. Jinx, Leona vs. sunglasses, pirates vs. ninjas, etc. These are super subtle things that might add 1g or -1hp or something of that scale - nothing particularly game-breaking for the most part. I don't know what the development cost is for making (and more importantly - maintaining) these things are, so I can't speak to if they are easy to add, or more trouble than they've been worth. I see that they removed the item for Rengar (in the Kha'Zix/Rengar quest) and turned it into a passive stacking buff instead.

I agree with TurquoiseYoshi and ChromaticEagle that 200g is a hefty chunk of change that could change the course of a game, if it came at the right moment. The number of times I've been short even 50g to get my next item I can hardly count!

I think the kind of effort that's going into these things is usually channeled into the taunt quotes (which have been pretty extensive, recently, I thought).

What I wouldn't want to see is more reasons for players to fight for results that don't align with the rest of their team. You sometimes see this in events - if you've got half your team wanting to kill more turrets, and another team wants to win fast, then you get players who are misaligned in their goals, and that can lead to intra-team conflict. Maybe you argue that 200g isn't enough to create that sort of conflict - but I've seen how even in normal games, an upset player can begrudge a jungler some CS, or a player in a vs. bots game might be disappointed that they didn't practice a baron kill before ending the game. I could only imagine the anger some players would display if they were playing Lucian and the jungler killed the enemy Thresh. Or how annoyed the rest of the team might get if Lucian, determined to get that gold, took a risk that they maybe shouldn't have done. :(

I could see something like these things turn up as hidden passives in the future (if it's not a maintenance nightmare - I don't know) or as something that could turn up in a future event, or more likely be something we see a lot of in taunts between champs.

I like this thinking. BTW thank you for commenting on my post :). The thing is, I dislike the fact that these passives are hidden and arent displayed in any kind of "epic way". The taunts are really cool (when i browse lol wiki I think that you have done a great job with dunkmaster darius, tahm kench, etc etc), but I have a hard time getting them to trigger - for example, i was playing as sion against urgot and I couldn't get that taunt to trigger despite the fact that i taunted right at him from like 2 feet away (maybe 300 units). Also, most players just spam taunt anyway.

TL;DR - these quests should be more apparent, easier to trigger, and have (slightly) bigger effects. Plus, I think it would be cool to have these things impact the game - for example, intentionally setting up your Lucian to kill thresh instead of just being passive bonus.

I like featured gamemodes tied to lore, like Black Market Brawlers and the differently themed ARAM. They don't show up that often, and everyone playing the game has the same 'quest' that they need to complete to win.

I like them too - especially as they're opt in, and everyone has an understanding of the expectation for the mode.

There have been times (like when different people were on different stages of the recent Bilgewater event) when it could get a little confusing, but again - as long as it's opt in, I think the positives outweigh the negatives. (Though if I can suggest ways to improve them even more, I'm not going to hold back ;)

You've probably been told this already, but the Bilgewater event was by far the most amazing update to League's lore and in-game universe, imo, and offered a ton of character/world development (in a persistent game world, no less) that was on par with many lore-driven games and also non-game fiction (the scrimshaw scene was especially memorable). In that context, would you consider tying more seasonal game modes to lore (the Harrowing seems like it'll be one such case)? Those instances don't have to be as vast as the Bilgewater update, but could offer smaller opportunities to flesh out characters and relationships that would probably not be worth creating an entire major lore event around. If by any chance a temporary game mode like Find the Teemo gets released, for example, that could be a good opportunity to flesh out Teemo a bit more and mention how other characters in the game view him, without necessarily making it a Bandle City update (though that could be a golden opportunity, too).

On that note, how busy/productive is Rito's lore team right now? It's obvious they've leveled up a ton over the past few years, but so far we've only gotten lore through either champion releases/overhauls or massive dedicated lore events. Are there any plans to release some lore in smaller parcels, and how much more work would that demand of the Rioters working on lore?

Taunts are fun and all... but they are not very interactive. The best kind of quest interactions are those like the lissandra, ashe, sejuani quest. It has no real benefit if you win or lose but for those that dont know it makes you wonder what is going on. It is stuff like that I wish there were more of.

This system is not without it's own problems and faults either I'm afraid.

The problem with assigning these voice keys is that in order to work you have to actually get close to at least one enemy champion (and 90%+ of the time it will be and enemy champion) and press a hotkey that not only requires you to stand still, but doesn't help you in any kind of gameplay sense. This results either in no one ever hearing the VOs, or that champion getting half of their health chunked off by the enemy they're supposed to be mocking. Really it should be something that happens at a more appropriate time and by itself, like when landing the killing blow on them.

The other problem is that due to the rather slow speed that VOs come out, most of the interaction comes off as incredibly one sided and less interactive. This is especially true as more and more visual reworks don't come with a new VO and the champion is stuck saying the same six or seven things they always have coughmorganaalistar. I'd love to hear what some of the champions think of Tahm's less than savoury comments about them, but in most cases that's almost certainly not coming any time soon.

Aatrox when are you going to chance him like for real. I do main Aatrox what a surprise there are people who main him. I have lots of ideas but none seem to catch your rioters eyes. Can link my previous post if you'd like to take a look if you have time from thinking of ways to buff vayne and riven and darius and garen and so on ;D

It would be a cool idea, but making there be large gold amounts wouldn't be good. That would end up in some champions being direct counters to others in every situation.

BeatinWarDrumz1 votes

First of all, 200 gold isnt that large and it would be only once

Second of all... is lore at ALL relevant? I mean come on, of course if gameplay is always ahead of lore then they'll just work on only gameplay... Gameplay is more important but not so much important that they cant sacrifice a teensy bit of gameplay (that could actually add counterplay) for a lot of lore

TurquoiseYoshi3 votes

Lore being directly influential on the gameplay in that way would be really strange. We already know about these people hating each other, so why do I need to play through it as well, without really feeling it, just because we require random lore interventions.

BeatinWarDrumz1 votes

mostly, it's just to increase exposure, because most of the community (I would estimate 80%) don't give a shitknow nothing about the lore

plus i think it would be cool

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

Or maybe the lore team could release more regular stories. Bilgewater gave a lot of exposure for the lore, but just one isolated event isn't gonna get everyone reading all the lore in existence. Riot has to actually try to make it interesting to the average player, and they can do that by making lore more often.

In any case, for a very long time, I didn't even know that those special quests existed, just because they were so rare and pointless. I forgot about them a couple of minutes after they showed up because I didn't care. Oh, Lissandra needs to kill Ashe? Well, I guess I'll do the same thing I would normally do because Lissandra is on the other side of the freaking map and can't actually get to Ashe to kill her without giving up a tower.

200g is pretty big, even in late game.

BeatinWarDrumz1 votes

if they make it ten gold like usual, then nobody would care

plus, it would be a two way street

Cosmetic effects like the freljord crown could work. But then there's Rengar vs Kha'zix reward.

BeatinWarDrumz1 votes

honestly, cosmetic would probably be harder coding wise, and the rengar khazix thing is rare to happen... im talking like every champion having this

GenoXx1 votes

Riot doesnt want to do any of that. This coming from them officially separating lore from game play. They want gameplay to have nothing to do with lore, and mainly because of ur reason number 1

SIGMAS1 votes

I personally would like an achievement type thing with some lore basis, maybe a small IP reward attached to it, thing like "play a match as rengar against kha'zigs and win" or "Taunt Zed as Shen, only triggers once per a game" it would be a neat way to get more IP and would have some fun lore attachments too, they would need to be careful so that shit like "Kill thresh as lucian" won't make you focus thresh and cost you wins.
