When did gangplanks theme become about Fire?

I thought he was the poison applying, scurvy curing, orange eating, pubic hair pirate? Now he has a fire sword and explosive casks...?

Dont get me wrong, im not upset or angry or have any disposition to the fact hes awesome now... just confused as to why Riot went with the fire explosion theme when we've got a couple of champs for that.

Just be thankful it's not a passive that you had to stack 3 times.

His new E is borderline stupid/useless.

Honestly I love the flaming sword. It makes him feel less like a generic pirate.

His old passive made no sense. Grog-soaked Blade? Grog doesn't poison you. It might get you drunk as it kills you, but it wouldn't poison you.

In fact, a pirate blade soaked in alcohol would probably be less septic than a normal pirate sword.

The explosive barrels I get.

The firesword thing, not so much.

It just doesn't have a space of it's own in his theme, and kinda sticks out a bit.

I wish they'd kept his raise morale speed burst integrated into his basic kit really, it's one of those iconic abilities in his kit which felt like a really thematic thing without being overly...

I dunno, what's the correct word here...

flashy? some closely related synonym?

Pirates. You can never predict them

They changed it since it made more sense for his kit and background. The term "FIRE!" came from igniting canons.

I guess he dunks his sword in alcohol and then sets it on fire.It is way more intimidating this way.

I think it was done for lore reasons. Each region of Runeterra seems to have themes that tie the champions from those regions together (freljord = ice, shadow isles = darkness, etc.) My guess is the theme for bilgewater is going to be fire based on the reworks to gangplank and miss fortune and the new ARAM map.

Because he is a pirate and most pirates deal with explosions and stuff, at least the stereotypical pirate does.

I like to think that the blade is magical or enchanted in some way. Given his status and experience as a legendary pirate, I wouldn't doubt if somewhere along his journey he came across this weapon and claimed it as his own :P But I really dig the dipped in oil/alcohol theory
