Help me, lore community! Factions needs some more Champ ideas for Piltover.

Faction Rosters

I'm not posting this in Community Creations for two main reasons:

  1. I think this qualifies as a thread about various Champions' themes and relations to Piltover. It's a bit speculative from a canon perspective, but so far as I can tell, most of what we do on this board is speculative anyway. (Insert "dark and mysterious past" joke here.)
  2. Nobody reads Community Creations. That's something I'd love to change, but in the short-term, that's the reality.

So, background. Factions is a community game mode based around…you know what, I've typed that out so many times that I'm just going to stop there, and instead say: in Factions, we have faction versus faction matches (e.g. Demacia versus Noxus), and each faction gets to choose from Champions affiliated with that faction. Factions start off with smaller default rosters made up of the Champions with the strongest connections, but Summoners can also recruit more Champions as the arc progresses, which both adds in some story developments and brings in a meta-strategy element.

Tiers of Champions

Here's the tl;dr on Champion categorization:

  • Core. Champions whose absence from the roster would be downright bizarre, given how strongly connected they are to the faction. Examples would include Garen for Demacia. Factions start each arc with at least their full Core list.
  • Secondary. Champions whose presence on the roster would be largely unobjectionable. These Champions are easy to recruit, and factions may also start with some of them to pad out their lineup.
  • Tertiary. Champions who have some connection to the faction, but are kind of weird or out of place. These are "expensive" pickups, consuming two pickup slots whereas Secondaries consume only one. In-universe, recruiting them often involves pulling strings with the League, making them special promises, tilting the faction's objectives to satisfy them, and so on.

There are presumably in-universe rules for who gets to recruit which Champions. We purposely leave that kind of vague, so as to avoid the need for some massive exegesis of League Champion selection law. Really, it's more of an out-of-universe question of how well the Champions fit together.

Factors

And here's the quick version of the main factors we consider:

  • Story. The Champion's written story. This includes both Riot lore and Factions lore. A Core Champion should have a really powerful Story connection. (e.g. Jarvan is the crown prince.) A Secondary needs to have at least a moderate connection. (e.g. Ahri lives in Ionia, even if she cares more about eating/not eating livers than helping Karma with anything.) A Tertiary ideally has at least a teeeeensy bit of Story connection. (e.g. there's some throwaway mention of Shaco having lots of fans in Noxus.)
  • Theme/Feel. The Champion's overall tone. This might include their visual appearance, their VO, or just the tropes they invoke. A classic Secondary-level combination is a dash of Story and a big dose of Theme, as with Ahri: even if her written backstory had her as being from the Freljord or something, she's a freaking kitsune (or the Korean equivalent) and obviously belongs with fantasy Asia. Leona is arguably an example of a Secondary based on Theme, for Demacia: though her Story connection is weak, she's a knight in shining armor type of character who fits right in.
  • Gameplay. Part of the fun of Factions is that factions tend to develop unique playstyles. For example, Demacia is known for its aggressive all-in teamfight that involves everyone pushing R and shouting DEMACIA! really loudly. A Champion gets some bonus points if they enhance this playstyle, or meet some other Gameplay objective, like providing a lower-IP option for ADC. Note that filling in a gap or weakness is not really a Gameplay strong point; factions get their unique identities in part from their limited rosters. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that.

So those are the main factors.

Piltover

So, Piltover. Piltover doesn't have a lot of Champions. It just doesn't. Here's what we have so far:

Current Roster These are the Champions they already have. Most are Core; it doesn't really matter, though. Caitlyn Ezreal Heimerdinger Janna Jayce Vi Ziggs The current roster is locked in, for better or worse. Just providing it for context.

Secondary These are easily recruitable Champions for Piltover. Definitely looking for suggestions here. Blitzcrank Corki Orianna Zilean Zac Tristana

Tertiary These are "reach" options. Lux MissFortune Teemo Nautilus XinZhao

I actually think there's a case for Tristana being Secondary, given her use of tech. Veigar is there only as a hostile to Noxus, another faction in this arc. Lux is there for that reason as well, although she also has a few other factors I won't get into.

So. Any ideas? Particularly looking for more Champions to add to their list of options. I'm trying to give each faction at least five. Piltover is also in a rough spot balance-wise, and could use a hand.

Some Ideas Nautilus

  • Story (weak). Nautilus has some questions about his origins or whatever. Piltover has science that could help answer those questions.
  • Theme (moderate). As a big old-fashioned diving suit, he does have a bit of a Piltover look to him.
  • Gameplay (weak). He's not really a poke champ.

Nidalee

  • Story (weak). If anything, you'd think Nidalee would dislike the City of "Progress". On the other hand, Piltover is a champion of "clean" technology, and Piltover sure is a lot better than Zaun in that regard.
  • Theme (negative). She's a primal huntress. They're a clockwork-steampunk-technological civilization. Together, they fight crime. They clash horribly.
  • Gameplay (strong). On the plus side, she's a great ("great") poke champ, and Piltover's traditional strategy is poke-heavy.

How about:

MissFortune

  • Story (moderate). Miss Fortune wants to unite Bilgewater and fight off the pirates - well, that would make Bilgewater more of a trade hub, and Piltover is all about water based trade of goods and knowledge. She could be keeping lines of trade open for that possible future.
  • Theme (moderate). I imagine MF would be a startling sight to see walking through the fancier parts of Piltover, but I imagine she'd revel in that.
  • Gameplay (pretty good??). I don't play her, but I suspect she'd be pretty pokey.

So, what are your thoughts on Bard. He technically shows up when there is an objectively dangerous situation, so would that end up as a spoiler of "Those are the bad guys because Bard is against them"

In terms of the given question though, I'd have to say Twisted Fate and Graves, mainly because they really show no clear allegiance in their lore, going where they want. Graves was only born in BilgeWater, but he doesn't seem to care about leaving and Twisted Fate, born from Gypsies, also wanders place to place. They could see Piltover as their next hit for gambling or understand that their could be some real cash in for them.

Also side note, I got one question. What about Rivals? Graves hates Twisted Fate, so it would make sense that he would be against what ever cause TF is for. Other examples include Zed is against the Ninjas; Akali, Shen, and Kennen. Syndra is against Irelia and Karma/ other Ionian authorties Jinx loves messing with Caitlyn and Vi.

In other words, whenever a specific champ is going to be played, lets say Akali was picked, someone could play Zed, since he is against her.

So I'm new to this; are you including anti-Noxus champions as well?

Ekko Is definitely a stretch, but I think it's possible he could be persuaded by Vi, depending on how that conversation goes; most likely he wouldn't fight for Piltover necessarily but as a favor to Vi or something. He's got poke though, as well as hextech.

Sivir Is a mercenary, Piltover seems pretty wealthy. She's got poke as well

Rumble Similar to Ekko, doesn't really like Piltover at first; maybe if you can pull Tristana in, Rumble will follow? He's got yordle-tech though, maybe could exchange knowledge with the hextech people or something

TwistedFate Piltover might be a good place to make some money gambling; maybe he gets in trouble with the authorities and agrees to fight for his freedom. Also is pretty poke-y. And when there's TF, there's:

Graves also has some poke, and isn't his shotgun sort of hex-tech?

Galio perhaps, he's anti-Noxus for one, and does have poke.

Lucian perhaps, if Noxus has undead stuff (Sion, etc), Lucian might come in

Vayne similar to Lucian, though she's not as poke-y

Varus also anti-Noxus, has poke

Velkoz has poke, may want to study some hextech (though he might also just dissect everyone instead)

Xerath also poke-y, based on old lore he seemed to just want power, which hextech may provide; based on new lore, not sure.

Is this the kind of stuff you're looking for?

I hope I'm not too off base here, but...

Jinx

Story (Strong). What city does Jinx love to terrorize? I'll give you a hint: that's not Bandle City in "Get Jinxed!". Piltover is Jinx's current residence. She may have a "this is my sandcastle to destroy, you can't mess it up!" attitude when it comes to Piltover, making her recruit-able to defend it (or at least showing up just long enough to shoot rockets at someone, watch Vi and Cait run around trying to deal with it, and leave before the problem's resolved). Theme (Moderate). Steampunk weapons defending a steampunk city? Seems legit to me. The problem comes when you look at all the other champions. They're friendly towards Piltover and, well, Jinx has some issues with Piltover being the dullest place on Runeterra. Gameplay(strong). Rockets and zappy things flying all over the map. Seems like a match to me. Wasn't there a description of Jinx at some point that her weapon's looked Piltover-ish in design, but her clothing was Zaun?

Viktor

Viktor's one of the top-tier genuises of the current generation - focused on transcending the flesh of all mankind - not just that of Zaunites. He's running about with the intent of proving how awesome he is, and genuinely seems inclined to help others in that sort of zany "wanna be a robot?" kind of way that he's famous for.

Soooo.... y'know.

They were already mentioned, Galio, Vayne and Lucian might join Piltover? They may want to "represent" Demacia's interest in the dispute, or just to bother Noxus. The two adc's fit the poke category, while Galio migh provide the necessary tanky build Piltover somewhat lacks. Though I consider him heavy poke as well.

Doctor Ivellius6/3/2015, 9:30:54 PM3 votes

I do think I'd throw Tristana and a reluctant Rumble into the mix as Secondary if Noxus and Shurima are the other two factions. I can definitely see them lending aid to Piltover against these other two. You could maybe even throw in Viktor, who believes in technology as progress, though he and Jayce wouldn't get along very well.

What about Garen? If Lux is involved, it'd make sense that he'd want in, and the Steel Legion skins are sort of a hypothetical future in which Demacia and Piltover have become even closer.

Rextreff6/3/2015, 7:51:41 PM3 votes

Soraka has a large story connection to Piltover, and she has a lot of poke too

ElJanitorFrank6/4/2015, 12:50:52 AM2 votes

Are you sure about Blitzcrank in your secondary? I just don't see him being a part of PIltover.

He didn't particularly like Zaun from his lore, but he definitely has Zaun characteristics. His quotes include, but are not limited to:

"Exterminate. Exterminate"

"Quake in fear, fleshling"

"The time of man has come to an end"

I dunno, I just don't really think he's a Piltover person.

Can I ask if champions can be in multiple factions? Because Lux is obvoiusly from Demacia, and there are other champions from other factions that could be included for Piltover.

Imortal Dragon6/23/2015, 3:16:28 AM1 votes

lol i was actually wondering if you were in any way looking for champion ideas not skins but new champions n story to boot kinda like this one (A dragon/human hybrid name raphael with pure white hair scar over his right eye, he is wearing a dark red coat with both sleeves torn off. under he has a black chained shirt and just as black pant (heres where it gets complicated) (you know Udyrs spirit guard skin where the claws glow.) (and kha gath? has evolution cycles) this character should have evolution cycles through dragon fazes. so in one he has dragon scales and tail. in another glowing wings. n the third he has glowing claws that go up to his elbows. lol :3 kinda wanna see how it turns out) he would be a fighter who would be using his dragon abilities to good use (Q= Dragon force. able to gain speed and strength for a short time) (W= Dragon scales. gains high armor) (E= dragon dash. sprints forward leaving a trail of fire burning enemies who walked in an slowing them down) (R= Dragon instinct. evolves a ability to do something extra and engulf a lards area into flames) i have a few other ideas in mind if you wanna hear more :3 friend me on lol to hear more if u wanna (or message ps3 Draco_King7)

Several ideas for champion picks

Ryze Ryze works better with Piltover than Shurima. He would want to stop Shurima from destroying their country again, and keep Noxus from getting powerful spells. He also has a hatred of Xerath, saying that he is an abomination and must be destroyed.

Velkoz A darker path for Piltover. Trade for knowledge with the Void. Risky, but it could be rewarding.

Kassadin If Shurima turns to the void he'll probably want to keep things from going to hell again.

Gragas With Piltover needing champions he could join as a tertiary in exchange for some scientists to help him with his beer.

Rumble Rumble probably has some opinions on Piltover making a train to Bandle City.

Lucian Lucian's guns are called relic weapons, but why would Demacia have relic guns. Perhaps the relics are of Piltoverian origins.

MasterYi Master Yi's goggles are made by Heimerdinger.

cshakes6/5/2015, 3:03:27 PM1 votes

Anyone who's against Zaun, maybe? If Janna's a secondary for Piltover, then Ekko could be, too. Zac could perhaps be persuaded, as could Viktor. (...and anyone else Zaun has wronged.) Since Bandle City and Piltover have historically been allies, I think that all yordles not pledged elsewhere should be available pickups. Now, leaving out all the Noxian and Shuriman champions, here are some that may work with a poke playstyle: Karma KogMaw Nidalee Sona Syndra Velkoz Zyra Lux

The Soulforged6/6/2015, 6:10:18 PM1 votes

The relationship of Demacia and Piltover might lead to alliances, along with their hate for Noxus. Someone like Poppy wouldn't fit in gameplay or thematics much, but would have a large picture in lore, considering she's also a yordle which makes her automatically somewhat affiliated with Piltover.

Yup, this is just a rouse to get my main into the faction I chose.

http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/4tOEPEE0-champion-concept-rogaz-the-bilgewater-hoarder This is a champion concept i recently put on the forums, The champion comes from bilgewater which i think is in a much worse state than piltover in terms of champions that come from there, only two?

DrAwesome56/12/2015, 10:48:44 PM1 votes

Veigar veigar was tortured in noxus so if pilot we is fighting noxus ( or possibly zaun, who has a close relationship with noxus) he would definitely want to get revenge for the torture he went through, and also it would boost his reputation as powerful if piltover wins whatever battle Also even though veigar is not a poker he can Nuke low health enemies after they are poked at a lot
