Etlac, Temple Dancer

Lore CCC mandated I'm-not-American note

West Tower, Institute of War

  • "...our latest League contender, Etlac, a temple dancer from the southern Kumungu--"
  • "...our latest League contender, Etlac, high priestess from the southern--"
  • "...our latest League contender, mighty high priestess Etlac from the deep and mysterious--"

The bard crumpled up another sheet of parchment. The sound of a creaking door behind him broke his concentration. He angrily turned around and shouted: "Marcus! You told me to stay away from your summoning hall at any cost when you invoke your demons lest unholy doom befall me. How about returning the favour?"

Summoner Marcus did not flinch. "You know the Spotlight is tomorrow. Seeing as this whole waste of time was your idea to begin with, I assume you will be ready in due time?" Indignantly, the bard rose up from his desk. Standing tall on his chair and dramatically waving a Jarvan IV action figure, he replied: "Tell me, Summoner Marcus! What is the goal of the Institute?"

"To enforce peace in Runeterra by establishing a means for all nations to settle violent conflicts through structured battle," the summoner parroted the first statute of the Institute.

"Wrong, my friend. We achieved this goal many years ago. Today our enemy are the very people of Runeterra. Imagine they come to their collective senses, take a good look at the ruling caste and decide that the social ladder would look better on fire. Imagine the uprisings! The pandemonium! The public executions! The Lightshields and Darkwills of this world, they tremble in fear of the common man! Should the Institute fall, there will be riots on the streets!"

The bard opened his bag, pulled out a folded up scout hat and placed it on his head, making the blowpipe sign with his left hand that unites Teemo fans across Runeterra. "Bread and games, Marcus! We keep them glued to their scrying pools and buying League memorabilia! You command the forces of hell, summoner, but I command an army of 30 million rioters! You master the element of fire, but I keep it away from a powder keg the size of Runeterra!", the bard contined menacingly.

The summoner sighed. He could not get used to the new ways. The merch, the fancrowds, hundreds of thousands of them watching the annual championship like it was the most important thing on the face of Runeterra, neglecting their daily lives in favour of the drama and excitement of the League, the heated discussions on the streets about the validity of a rules change to keep some champion in check...

"The Spotlight will continue as scheduled," the bard added. "I just need to figure out a viable lore. An intriguing beginning, a dramatic twist, a little bit of humour and justice..."

The summoner was about to ask why he wouldn't just go with the truth, but a glance at the bard told him that he should probably excuse himself. The bard and his colleagues had been trying for a long time to abolish the Institute's mission and reform the League in accordance with this relentless hunt for viewers and money. He could only hope that this fateful day would come later rather than sooner.

Public Hall, Institute of War

"Today we assemble to reveal our latest hero willing to risk it all on the fields of danger and glory. Behold Etlac, mistress of mysterious Kumungu witchcraft, queen of the darkest recesses of..." Listening to the bard's dramatic announcement in the grand hall through the thick walls of the Institute, the summoner slowly laid his head into his arms.

Down in the crowded hall, their latest recruit appeared on the podium, blinking at the masses; her speech was slightly awkward, as if she was not used to speaking with mortals. Her accent sounded like the drumming chants of the Kumungu. "I am Etlac, daughter of Ihuicatl. I dance to honor my father. Ihuicatl wanted me to dance for him in the golden temple..."

Hundreds of young girls cheered in unison at the brave dancer girl joining the League. The bard smiled and nodded back, welcoming his new target group to the fold. The girl made a few graceful motions, bowed and continued:

"They said he is dead and will never rise again. I didn't believe them. I cut their throat and poured their blood over the idol of Ihuicatl to wash away their terrible words." She made a heartbreakingly sad face. "I miss Ihuicatl and want to be with him again. The bard-man promised that when I win the League, a hundred summoners will be sacrificed in his name so the sun may darken again and my father will reign in fire!"

Unscripted chaos broke out in the hall. The bard barged at the girl like a train going off the rails at a hundred miles an hour, waving a script in her face, shouting until his face turned beet red. "You had one job!" The girl stood there, confused as to what she had done wrong, but the bard continued like a whirling force of nature. "Do you have any idea what you did? You ruined the lore! This Spotlight is useless!"

His rant was interrupted by a disembodied ghostly hand tapping him on the shoulder. A row of Summoners stood at the back of the podium, arms crossed and an angry frown on their faces. "There they are! My father's sacrifices! Bard-man! Bard-man!", the dancer girl cheered, holding a figurative shovel and digging him a hole to the depths of hell. More giant ghost hands appeared, sporting boxing gloves. From the crowd, panicked screams overwhelmed his answer. This was going to suck.

CCC challenge: Knock knock

Deep underneath the Institute, a tiny little hand knocked on a massive wooden door. When all the big people started fighting, Etlac had fled underground. The door opened abruptly and a pale white light momentarily blinded her. A female stood in the doorway, pointing a curved sword above her head where she expected her visitor's face to be.

"Well, young girl, you should be happy you didn't walk into Sion's room next door. Praise the night!" She led her inside and closed the heavy door. "Welcome to the dormitorium, or the Dungeon as we call it. They say it is for our protection. Too many unfortunate accidents happened to League champions on their way to an important battle, so now they lock us up down here instead. At least they gave me a key!"

Etlac looked around the room. It was symmetric, adorned with tall taprestries and graceful marble arches. A pool of water in the middle reflected the light of the moon, though the room was three floors and a hundred feet of cold earth below the surface.

"I heard about the events at the Showcase. Solar worship leading to a fight and six fans trampled to death. How unexpected!" Etlac shuddered at her voice. "Young sun-priestess," the woman continued icily. "Just like the others, you know nothing but useless bloodshed in the name of your heathen god. In these civilised parts of the world, we don't sacrifice ten warriors at nightfall to make the sun rise the next morning. And yet it does!"

Etlac replied innocently: "Because my people sacrifice them for you?"

She ignored her question. "And now the others are all dead. But it is not too late for you. You have great potential, girl. But you should learn to think for yourself and cast off the chains of heliocentric patriarchal pro-establishment oppression!"

"I'm not oppressed. I serve only my father. One day he will walk Runeterra again. You are naughty!"

The woman suddenly stood before her in a flash of pale light, fierce like an embodiment of the vengeful moon, silver khopesh in hand. "Ignorant thrall!"

--

Knock, knock. A disembodied ghost hand knocked on the door. The lock opened itself. "Is anyone there?", the Summoner asked with a voice used to commanding demons from hell. He found Etlac cowering in a corner. "The moon!", she whispered in fear.

The Summoner looked around. "The moon is far away, child. You were alone the whole time!" He picked Etlac up and carried her into the labyrinthine hallways of the Dungeon, pausing only to collect her censers and ceremonial dagger. "Your room is in the other wing. You should get some sleep, it has been quite an eventful day for all of us! Welcome to the League!" He laughed. "I'm sure that bard told you what to say up there. He loves drama! Don't worry, we don't think you're insane!" She fell asleep in his arms, making a mental note to thank him when her father walked Runeterra again: he would be her first and greatest sacrifice to him.

Model

Etlac is a young temple dancer from the deep jungle of Kumungu. She wears an ornate but graceful outfit decorated with gemstones and couatl feathers and a large decorated headdress. Each of her four dances come with different idle, movement and attack animations and a minor outfit change. She wields two censers equipped with sharp blades on long golden chains, which she uses to attack enemies. It has a slightly longer range than a regular auto attack.

Recall Etlac dances, slowly disintegrating into light motes that rise to the sky.

Skins

  • Lunari Etlac: Dancing down the moon when the clock strikes thirteen and the black cat meows thrice.
  • Santa Compana Etlac: Harrowing 2014 skin featuring Etlac as a necromancer dancing to summon the dead.

Abilities

Concept: Dances Etlac's four abilities are stances ("dances") that temporarily buff one of her statistics. When she activates an ability, she switches to another (or the same) dance and casts a spell whose shape is determined by the new dance and whose effect and visuals are determined by the old dance. There is a short cast animation during the transition. Each of her dances has a mana cost of 40/45/50/55/60 and dances have a global cooldown of 8 seconds.

Etlac has no ultimate but has a fourth regular ability. Instead, she gains 1 free skill point after scoring 4 kills/assists and 1 free skill point after scoring 8 kills/assists, enabling her to max out all of her abilities at level 18.

[Passive] Rainbow of Ihuicatl Etlac has up to 5 stacks, each increasing the cooldown speed of all dances except the one she is currently performing by 20%. Switching to another dance consumes 1 stack if she has any. Stacks regenerate at a rate of 1 every 20 (-0.5 per level) seconds, unaffected by CDR.

  • Example: She starts out with 5 stacks. She uses [Q], consuming 1 stack and starting an 8 second global cooldown. The cooldown of her [W], [E] and [R] runs very fast and clears in 1.6 seconds (affected by CDR) while the cooldown of [Q] ticks down at its normal pace. She then uses [W] after 1.8 seconds, consuming 1 stack and starting a new 8 second global cooldown. Her [Q], [E] and [R] clear in 3.2 seconds (affected by CDR), while [W] ticks down at its normal pace.

The intention of this mechanic is to allow her to build up for a while and then go nova, without overpowering her in drawn out fights.

[Q] Comonqui - Fire Dance

  • Visuals: While performing this dance, Etlac wears long red and gold ribbons. When moving or attacking, she juggles burning torches.
  • Buff: Etlac twirls her torches, dealing 25/40/55/70/85 (+0.15 AP) magic damage per second to enemy units within 225 range for 3 seconds.
  • Incoming spell shape: Etlac throws three bolts of elemental energy (based on spell effect) shaped like glowing birds that streak towards the nearest three enemy units within 800 range, inflicting the spell effect on striking. The projectiles cannot be dodged or evaded, but do not prioritise champions.
  • Outgoing spell effect/visuals: The spell uses her torches to summon the fires of the Sun God, burning enemy units for 20/40/60/80/100 (+0.4 AP) magic damage and an additional 40/60/80/110/130 (+0.4 AP) magic damage over 4 seconds.

[W] Ehecatl - Wind Dance

  • Visuals: While performing this dance, Etlac wears ceremonial rainbow couatl wings. When moving or attacking, she whirls in circles.
  • Buff: Etlac gains 30/35/40/45/50% movement speed, decaying to 0% over the course of 2.5 seconds.
  • Incoming spell shape: Etlac channels for 1 second, flourishing her couatl wings and summoning up a cyclone of elemental energy (based on spell effect) that sweeps up debris. Faint shadows of Kumungu warriors are visible in the wind. When the channel completes, all enemy units within 350 range are struck by the spell effect. The spell effect is 10% stronger against enemy units within 225 range of Etlac.
  • Outgoing spell effect/visuals: The spell covers enemy units in glittering couatl feathers, silencing and blinding them for 1.0/1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4 seconds and dealing 40/70/100/130/160 (+0.5 AP) magic damage.

[E] Mixtlatitoque - War Dance

  • Visuals: While performing this dance, Etlac wears jaguar skins and exchanges one of her censers for a skull spear. When moving or attacking, she assumes a warrior's stance.
  • Buff: Etlac takes 20/25/30/35/40% reduced damage from all sources, gradually decreasing to 0% over the course of 3 seconds.
  • Incoming spell shape: Etlac briefly turns into a jaguar and dashes in the direction of the cursor, hitting all enemy units in her path and leaving a trail of elemental energy (based on spell effect) that lingers for 2.25 seconds and applies the spell effect to enemy units crossing the trail. The dash has a maximum range of 625 and cannot pass through terrain.
  • Outgoing spell effect/visuals: The spell causes rocks to erupt underneath enemy units, snaring them for 0.8/0.9/1.0/1.1/1.2 seconds and dealing 50/80/110/140/170 (+0.6 AP) magic damage.

[R] Ce Ocelotl - Sacrifical Dance

  • Visuals: While performing this dance, Etlac wears bloodstained feathers and exchanges one of her censers for a sacrifical dagger. When moving or attacking, pools of blood form in her wake.
  • Buff: Etlac is healed for 15/35/55/75/95 (+0.2 AP) (+1% per 1% missing health) over 3 seconds.
  • Incoming spell shape: Etlac empowers her next auto attack within 2 seconds to inflict elemental damage (based on spell effect) as she pierces the target's heart with the silver blade on her censer and blood spurts out. The spell effect delivered by this spell is 30% stronger.
  • Outgoing spell effect/visuals: The spell summons a cloud of obsidian shards that eviscerate enemy units, dealing 50/80/110/140/170 (+0.7 AP) magic damage while Etlac gains 10/20/30/40/50 (+0.1 AP) health and 10/12/14/16/18 mana for each champion hit by the spell.
