[Item Concepts & Keystone Concept] Compendium v2 - Let's try this again (3 items and 1 keystone)

Freewalker·12/27/2019, 9:43:49 PM·13 votes·8,987 views

Before Christmas I posted a small compendium of three item concepts, but two of them were problematic in their design, primarily because of incompatibility with the Predator keystone and unwanted assassin synergies on champion kills. So this time, all three items were updated (with gold efficiency calculations for those who care about them), and a keystone concept was added to the list. It's an inspiration keystone, so it could be a candidate to replace Omnistone (or be added as a fourth keystone).

These concepts were designed to complement a support champion concept I've been working on. Hopefully I can get it posted sometime in January.

Ghostwalkers and Netherstride Grimoire are previously existing items in League of Legends. The concepts below are ideas on how they could return in Summoner's Rift.

Comments and criticism are appreciated. :)

December 29, 2019.

  • Ceremonial Linkblade now does 10 per 25% base mana regen bonus damage instead of 5, so it can scale better in the late game.

  • Netherstride Grimoire's passives now work with red/blue and rift scuttler.

Wait. These are so good. Very nice work!

Think haste keystone should effect champion around you so solidify it in the support role

Keystone is awful, it's just a worse predator. All the items are bad besides Grimoire, and even it isn't very good, it's like an ap raptor cloak only you have to kill the tower for it to work.

I think that haste keystone sounds cool but i think it has three problems.

  1. It looks weak

  2. Who would make use of it, who would be willing to make inspiration their primary tree just to have bonus movement speed.

  3. Why would you get this keystone when predator exists and gives you a bigger speed boost that lasts much longer?

Udyr players would kill for those boots lol.

First, I really respect the creativity here, you've put some work in and I respect that. However, the end result is a bit of a mixed bag.

  • The keystone, haste, doesn't work on a design level. It would be practically the ONLY keystone in the game that does not involve interaction with an enemy in some way, for one thing, and it draws a pretty sharp contrast to predator and comes up wanting. Predator works as a keystone because it provides a substantial and noticable buff with the trade-offs that it alerts enemies when you are near and is totally wasted if you don't get off an attack before it ends. The ideal use case of this keystone is spamming it in lane for maneuverability and free resources or faster roaming. It has to be overtuned to feel impactful, and it's ideal use case is non-interactive. It's a design space they haven't gone with keystones, but I think for a reason.

  • ceremonial link blade has potential. Numbers can be tuned, but the idea of a supportive sheen item is a fun idea to toy around with and it seems to have just enough riders to make it interesting and different enough from lich bane to work, though, currently, it seems like straight up lich bane is going to be better on the champions you want this item to work best for.

  • skipping forward, that's the problem with netherstride grimoire: it's just a worse lich bane. Pretty much any AP based champion that autos objectives is going to get way more bang for their buck with a lich bane. Lich bane's proc works on towers, you get mana And CDR in addition to movement speed and AP and, as a huge perk, that extra damage works on everything, not just major objectives. There's simply not enough of a niche for it that justifies its use when lich bane already exists, and can already have it's tower killing damage amplified with a nashor’s tooth it's a very rare occasion that you'd want all 3 in your item slots and it doesn't offer enough of a reason to pick it over the other 2, even with the neat jinx run-away passive.

  • Hopping back to ghostwalkers I really like the idea. I think everyone likes the idea of more boots but people aren't exactly sure what a good design space that hasn't already been used is. I don't think ghostwalkers is that item, but I like the idea you have. The problem isn't with balance here, though ghost walker’s Mana regen seems not to be at all linked to the identity of the item and without it is pretty much just worse boots off swiftness (which aren't seem super often). The dependent nature if their+10 movement speed is completely outclassed by the permanence of swifties, and ghosting through minions is very niche in a way that makes them almost too niche to use. The other problem is that it's not entirely clear what all “counts” when it comes to what does and doesn't activate it to the point where you might as well say “this is designed for Sona and Udyr and no one else” because if it is balanced on them, it's on pretty much everyone else, and if it's satisfyingly balanced on the rest of the cast, it's a straight buff and a must-buy to them, and in it's current balance state, it's the former, you MIGHT buy it on Sona or udyr, but it's basically worse boots off swiftness on both of them.

Don't mean to come across as overly critical here. Making new items is HARD and even Riot clearly struggles at it, but I don't think most of these entries have it. Still, getting even one compelling idea for a new item is a pretty good accomplishment and I think you had fun with the process either way.

Would love to some AP Defensive Items except Spirit Visage and Adaptive Helm. (For Fighters)

All in all: Great work! Looking good.

Never heard of Netherstride, but nowadays mages already completely rape towers so maybe it'd be neat if they removed their magic damage again and add this. Also, that keystone seems INCREDIBLY weak.

WoonStruck12/28/2019, 7:02:47 AM2 votes

Ghostwalkers should probably grant small additional bonuses when Ghosting is stacked.

Also, probably slightly higher base MS. 50 or so.

Light of Madness12/28/2019, 1:44:04 PM2 votes

Idk. I loved the icons they look nice.

The boost of mana regen Idk why would I want that. I can use the rune to have sustain mana in lane but I will be losing the speed boost when I do and when I use the speed I will be losing the mana boost. you don't really lose but you can see both are used in different situations, the only way I can see both being used is baiting the enemy my low mana, but Idk.

I always like to give mov speed to my teammates when I was sup but just a link for 10 mov speed is kind of meh.

The boots, I need mana regen a lot of times, I could buy that but the ghostling thing is kind of off. I wouldn't use an item to get the ghostling effect, this will be just a bonus that I wouldn't be using a lot.

The book art is cool but for me is a big "no no". Towers are weak, jungle is easy, the only time they have any power is until 5 minutes of game, after that they are so useless that any buff to destroy them is a big no for me.

But yeah, the ideas are cool just need polish and the icons are really nice.

Is the malice passive supposed to be like a burn effect on towers and epics?? if so that makes junglers like Evelynn super strong. I still like the idea
