Lore

Background Very early in the creation of the Runeterra, the world was covered in a vast ocean. Terrible sea monsters ruled the world, and their god, Nagakabouros, was the most powerful being on the planet. Deep in the heart of Runeterra’s fiery core, another god came to be from the molten seas of stone: Motui. Motui bided his time, waiting for the moment he could bring his fire to the surface.

First, he cracked the hard stone that lay at the bottom of the seas, allowing his fire to bubble through the seams. Then, he pressed the magma through the holes, forcing the rock to the surface of the sea. He created two massive regions of land, Valoran and Ionia, and several smaller islands. Nagakabouros, however, was furious with the creation of the land, and sent his monstrous legions to lay waste to Motui. Fierce as an volcano, Motui defeated the terrible creatures, and from their bodies, he crafted creatures of his own.

Ever crafty, he fashioned many fascinating creatures out of magic and flesh. Finally, he grew frustrated: while many of the creatures he created were magnificent and beautiful, none resembled him. So, taking a piece of himself, he fashioned the first primitive man. He cherished his new creation, and set about populating the world with it.

At this time, Nagakabouros became aware of man, and became jealous. He began to call man to the sea, but the people could not handle the terrible might of the waves. Therefore, he taught them how to sail, and instilled a rigid toughness in them. Motui was enraged that his rival had stolen some of his creation, and, heading out into the ocean, he sought to war with the ancient god once more.

Their battle was epic, shaping the land and seas to what they would become today. Eventually, both gods became too weak to continue, their prowess matching each others. Nagakabouros made his rest at the bottom of the seas, where his most powerful leviathans guard his rest, while Motui gave rest atop his newest island, where his fire never stops churning in the peak of the island’s volcano.

Awakening Temala had lived on Motui’nako for her whole life, as her clan had for millennia. Sickly as an infant, her parents had taken her to the top of the mountain to be blessed by the god they believed lived inside. Along the path, Temala’s mother fell and dropped Temala into a lava flow. The child, however, was unharmed, and a hand made of lava lifted her from the flow, cradling her. Upon her brow, she was marked with the symbol of Motui. From then on, she was a hardy child, never crying and always happy.

Temala grew up to become a priestess of the old god, ever grateful for her life, and pressing herself in servitude of him. Every challenge that faced the people of Motui’nako was met by Temala’s fierce determination, and she became a legend of the people who lived there. She too, however, was susceptible to the passage of time, and in her old age, the fire inside began to dim.

At about that time, a terrible sea monster plagued the village on the island. Temala set out to face the monster, but was returned on the brink of death. Asking one last favor, Temala had her people take her to the summit of the volcano. Upon reaching the summit, Temala called out to Motui one last time, and, passing from this life, her body plummeted to the lava below.

Her passing was marked with a massive eruption, and, the rage and bitterness at the loss of Temala awoke Motui from his ancient slumber. Taking on the visage of his beloved creations, he returned once more to his cherished land, and with his awesome power to bend the fire that ran within it, he set forth to bring retribution against the forces that would dare destroy the creations he had brought to the world.
