Consider yourselves appropriately informed!

The September contest will start early this Monday morning (9/1/14). Full details will also be given out then. Meanwhile though here's the basic stuff.

#Winnings

No RP this time fellas, sorry!

Winners of this contest will be the Top 5 entries. These concepts will be highlighted and cataloged into a future Hall of Fame post.

The top winner will be able to choose (within reason of course) the next Bonus Category for next month's contest.

I will always be looking for non-physical things I can throw at these contests for prizes such as Art, Animations and Accolades, but I'm not there just yet. But the show must go on!

#Score Categories

Entries will be scored on five categories

  • Lore
  • Kit
  • Originality
  • Effort (Previously "Extras")
  • Doom Mode (Previously Skin Ideas)

The last mode is the bonus category that will change from month to month

#Schedule

9/1 to 9/8 : Entries will be taken

9/8 to 9/22 : Entries will be judged by a volunteer mystery panel of your peers

9/24 : Results will be announced

But feel free to ask questions and give feedback, these contests are still very much a WIP in many areas.

I might be interested in judging some concepts...

Although I must mention here that having doom mode as a bonus category is quite frankly a dumb idea.

There is a reason why so few champions were part of the doom mode is that is because in order for the doom bots to not be completely absurdly unbeatable their attacks all had to have pretty big telegraph to them. For example Lux ' ultimate while crazy gives you have a second to dodge with it's charge up time. Makes for a cool doom ability.

But someone like poppy? I guess you could do something with her passive or ultimate? Maybe her dash knockback? But it won't be the same as lux because the attacks cannot be telegraphed and they are all pretty much point and click abilities. ..

Tldr: different style kits fit better into doom mode and it is a shame that doom mode is a judging category because it limits how you can design a kit.

As for the doom category I understand what your saying but I'll have to disagree. Yes some kits will naturally be easier and by the same extension some will be harder to do based on the kits nature. But it's far from impossible with some imagination. In your example, poppy is hard yes, but you can have the Q proc give multiple stacks, or her charge as you said knock back twice the distance of Alistar's headbutt. Maybe make her scorch the ground in her path at max passive stacks. There's still options, albeit less than an easier example like Lux. Imho this is more of an opportunity for the clever to shine through.

How many champion concepts are typically entered into this thing? Just want a rough estimate before I agree to put my time into it.

We got a whopping 42 concepts last time!

Personally, I'm hoping for an even bigger turnout (but then again, I'm not judging this time :P)

What Flint said, we had 42 last time and this is merely the second so I can't give you a sure answer. With the fact that RP/Poros will not be given out I'm expecting less people than last time, 30 or so, but the concept community is not to be underestimated.

So if you want straight numbers I'd say somewhere between 30-50. Either way it's gong to be a lot of reading. You'd have 2 weeks to do it though.

On the edit: Eh, saving that for the actual entries post, everyone will have a week. 2bh this is mostly just a second call for judges :P

The idea is simple, if your champion suddenly became a doom bot, what would he/she/it do to instill fear in innocent players and/or Riot shoutcasters?

Simple idea, but so many possibilities! (It was actually one of the upcoming judge's ideas!)

It's a LOT of time I agree lol. I'm actually going for both less strict and more strict logistics when it comes to judges this time around. I grab more than I feel I need and anyone who doesn't meet the deadline (myself included) will simply have all of their scores dropped. If everyone does well then we have a lot of opinions, if not we'll only have a few scores like last month but I don't have to delay the results for an entire week, :P

How is Effort rated?

For a variety of reasons, basically what it means literally.

Did you format the post to make it pleasant to look at/read? Did you add matchups, quotes, skin concepts, have everything fleshed out? Did you add any quirks? Did you give a detailed explanation of why you made each choices? Did you add base stats?

There are plenty of ways to fill this category!

What Flint said, think of it as a "miscellaneous awesomeness" score. People who score high here will probably be going the whole 9 yards and even farther with their concepts, I've seen things like recorded VO lines, theme songs, a full history behind the concept's creation, 3d models even poems on some concepts over the years. I'm not saying you have to have a ridiculous amount of superfluous stuff, it's just that if we're blown away by your concept this score will be high.

As far as how it's exactly weighted that's actually being discussed right now between me and the judges. We may try a few new things with this contest in comparison to last month's.

I have a few questions.

  1. How do we submit our concepts?
  2. Will we be allowed to see other peoples concepts? (not only top 5) This is great i've always wanted to share my champion concept! :)

  1. I'll be putting up a contest post this coming Monday giving full details and asking for entries. Post your concept in the "Skin & Champion Concepts" Board as you normally would, and then reply to the aforementioned post with a link. I'll reply to that comment confirming your entry. You can actually see an example of how the last contest worked here (This one will be improving on that as well, it was a little rough on both ends but not too bad imho)

  2. While entries are being taken I'll be making a list of links of all publicly entered entries which ideally will bring a good amount of visibility to the concepts and concurrent feedback. I'll be providing a copy of all the results (URL's included) in the results of all contestants too, primarily to allow them to easily see where they were weak/strong but also give a last burst of visibility to unique ideas.

Although it might be alot of work, it would be nice for a recap of our champion concept scores to get posted on the concept's page.

Yes, has to be an entirely new champion never posted on boards (also has to be yours :P). I know it's tempting to use your greatest concept for the contest, but they like to have the ground evened for everyone.

The judges use a spreadsheet made by Sir ArmaMalum, all categories score up to 10 points equally. (Unless he changed it for some reason, but that's what it was last time)

What Flint said (I'm saying that a lot, my internet was just restored a few minutes ago). One major motive for this contest is to generate new content within the concept community and hopefully get new people into the practice of concepts, and making sure everyone submits new things (and consequently later on concepts that they've saved specifically for these contests) is a good step towards it.

And which, if any, of the score categories counts for the most?

This is actually being discussed right now, the decisions between even weighting and uneven weighting primarily. If uneven is eventually decided, I am fairly confident Lore and Kit will be the heaviest weighted and the Bonus Category (in this case Doom Mode) would be the least. One thing that's been officially decided is to also raise the point cap per judge from 50 to 100 for a bit more scoring options for each judge, that will remain the same no matter which avenue is decided on.

ok i know the question has been basically asked (no previous concepts) but can you, say, take an old concept of yours and improve on the skills/lore and the rest to make it a similar champion, but also somewhat different? or would this still count on using the same champion?

Unless that champion changes significantly, I don't think that'd be allowed. I know I'm prob being annoying by assuming things but it has to be a new champion.

I can't just enter a champion named Karr, The Harvester, use the same basis for the kit and change the lore a bit and expect that to get through.

If you change it enough to where you can honestly say it's a different character and not an improved one then yes. More out of the fact that if it is truly that different I shouldn't be able to prove it's a repeat than anything else.

Keep in mind the primary goal of these contests is to spur new ideas and grow the concept community, so I highly encourage to try a brand new concept.

Can we set up the concept the day before then submit it? The one I want to submit is going to be a real pain to set up to make it look like it doesn't take 3 pages.

Two questions:

  • How important is art? Have a concept I'd really like to share, but I'm not very good at drawing. :/

  • Does the kit need numbers, or just some kind of estimation (since it's pretty much impossible to balance a concept)?

  1. Art is not required at all, and trust me you aren't the only one artistically challenged. I can't do much better than stick figures, lol. While people who add art and/or reference images will probably get a point or two into the "effort" category, it's by no means the only way to score high there. For example the winner of last month's contest Ferrum, The Warsmith didn't have any art, but had reference images and a lot of extras.

  2. I feel you, numbers aren't required. But they are encouraged! As they are legitimately harder to balance (and by extension show more effort into the concept).
