[PotD] [Survey] Personality Type and Favorite Champion <> UPDATE and DATA

Sir ArmaMalum·9/30/2014, 2:52:39 PM·42 votes·20,763 views

Hey guys, remember this?

For those of you who weren't around, I came around asking for people to help me out to see if there was any trends between personality types and favorite champions. Well the responses were staggeringly huge and I've only crunched them partially, but I do indeed have an update at the very least.

http://imgur.com/a/3fXTv#oxU6kkf

Here is the overarching data as of 12:36pm 9/24/14, about the time where the response rate died down. Naturally I don't expect to just tack this pictures on and say "have fun", I have a few interesting tidbits I can share with you, no squinting required. (seriously these graphs are freaking huge)

######Yes, I know I mispelled Blitzcrank.....

Note: * means this type was underrepresented compared to the rest of the sample size and will naturally have a false variance.

#What does it mean?

Well, even with 33,000+ responses, such a broad and generalized question will still cloud the analysis by a significant amount. But I think there are a few things we can take away from this that proves interesting.

#1) ISFJ's are rebels

Seriously though, ISFJ's seem to have a tendancy both towards healing supports and an avoidance of assassins. Being "Introverted Observant Feeling Judgement", that makes a surprising amount of sense. Granted ISFJ's were also within the lower half of the representation so the extreme variance in their results could have been exacerbated by that. But nonetheless ISFJ's seem to go against the FotM champions for the most part.

#2) Observant Types have a much greater 'focus' on their preferences

All the peaks and dips were quite close to being exclusively on the XSXX side of the equation. This could suggest the XNXX (Intuitive) type's natural tendency to be flexible cropping up, while the observant focus more on their own preferences. One wonders how often XNXX types call "fill" versus XSXX types........

#3) Playstyle correlations in ESTP and ESFP types

ESTP's seem to like the "burst stealth", juking champs. (Peak at Zed, Vayne, WuKong)

ESFP's seem to prefer close range, burst damage champs. (Peaks at Graves Akali, Ahri, Irelia, Zed) Irelia being a bit of an outlier.

Upcoming

I will be churning out pie charts per champion over the next few weeks (i.e. weighted breakdown of types for Aatrox players, Ahri players, etc.). I apologize for not having those out yet, it's the classic Testing Gauntlet before the drop date at Virginia Tech and naturally that has taken priority. They'll e out eventually though!

Too much college, not enough time >_<

Want to help out? The survey's still going! Additional responses will help refine the analysis as well as better represent the League community, so if you haven't taken the few minutes to give it a go, what are you waiting for?!

Step 1) Take this personality test: http://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

Re-posted because I put this up late last night and I don't believe many people who helped me out with this got to see it before getting buried.

Oh, cool! I'm one of the folks from the Research team :)

Would love to know more about why you chose the measures you did. Have you considered doing something like Big Five for the personality measurement? You could use the short-form version pretty easily. Might be fun to do a role-based analysis as well.

What are the sample characteristics of this? Opt-in stuff can get some interesting skew in parameters sometimes, might be neat to weight or subset based on that.

I really like this!

  1. Observant Types have a much greater 'focus' on their preferences All the peaks and dips were quite close to being exclusively on the XSXX side of the equation. This could suggest the XNXX (Intuitive) type's natural tendency to be flexible cropping up, while the observant focus more on their own preferences. One wonders how often XNXX types call "fill" versus XSXX types........

I'm an INTJ and I always call "Fill". I actually prefer to be surprised by my role... it gives me fresh perspective on the role/champ if I get surprised by it, rather than predetermining and demanding it. I actually play worse when I play the same champs over and over... but when I get to come back to them in a fill role, I am a goddess. /humble

Ahhh no INTJ trends?

WE AREN'T TRENDY, MY JUDGMENTAL, THOUGHTFUL FRIENDS

There wasn't much on ISTP :
Good work anyways :)

INFP. You know, I've said before that Quinn is the kind of champion that, based on what else I play, I should enjoy but I've never been able to get behind her. That being said, I do have a lot of fun on Gnar and Graves, who I identify as a very similar style.

This test is not taken seriously by psychologists, dunno why people think it means anything on the internet

sp44110/1/2014, 3:49:27 AM1 votes

Hey! I thought I'd be the only one who would vote for Urgot as my fav champion!

Darkomantis10/1/2014, 5:44:05 AM1 votes

Question to OP, should I purchase the premium profile? I don't know if it's worth it or not.

Fathappy310/1/2014, 8:58:46 AM1 votes

I took the test and ended up as an INTP but my type isn't represented in your post.
Is there a reason for this?

Fires of Justice10/1/2014, 5:06:09 PM1 votes

As a huge Myers-Briggs enthusiasts, this is one of the coolest surveys I've ever seen!! Thanks for doing this! #ENFP

Also, ahhhh I'm surrounded by INTJs. Disconcerting, yet provocative! You all make me so crazy, and yet so crazy!

Skiren10/1/2014, 9:09:52 PM1 votes

This is neat, I'm INTP myself, so I keep looking for all those in the charts XD I'm unsure why INTP is leading for so many champs in the 3rd chart?(when it wasn't seeming to be leading in like any in the chart before the 3rd)

Old Man Teeto10/2/2014, 9:02:05 AM1 votes

haha

Took the test.

I'm ENFJ, and my favorite champion has been Blitzcrank for a long time.

Only champion I took the time to write a guide for on the old forums too.

exiledFromBadmen10/2/2014, 3:18:39 PM1 votes

INFP and Elise? Can you find a connection?

Best 6pool OCE10/3/2014, 5:40:38 PM1 votes

No INTP? Nothing? Are we that rare? :'(

Edit: Oh I see, just no trends for us.

Edit 2: Wait, WHAT?!? INTPs had THE most number of responses out of all types?? From everything I've read, INTPs are one of, if not the most rare MBTI personality type, so this is very interesting.

Also find it interesting that my favourite champ fiddlesticks is most preferred by INTPs, and not many other types. The analysis of INTPs on 16personalities is also amazingly scary, it describes me to a T and more, making me realise things about myself I had never noticed but are so accurate.

Legostrike9/30/2014, 8:48:40 PM1 votes

Any comments about INTJ's? I noticed a lot of us like Zed, I'm thinking of learning him as well, seems fun. I've always liked Cho'Gath though, minion churning machine.

Kankberry9/30/2014, 11:06:14 PM1 votes

You should compile the picked champions to show totals so we can see who is most enjoyed and least enjoyed among all personalities. Would be interesting IMO.

Merxamers10/1/2014, 1:47:00 AM1 votes

something you may want to consider is that some people, such as myself, love to play a BUNCH of different champs, so just choosing one feels a little weird. (i am a INFJ/INTJ)

Darkomantis10/1/2014, 2:05:12 AM1 votes

Where is INFJ? :(

My most reliable jungle is Shaco [60% winrate] (which I own two skins for) My favorite top laner is Gangplank [50% winrate] (which I can be frustrated with at times because of how weak he can be half of the times)

I like to play LeeSin from time to time even though I suck with him. I also play Garen and Warwick if I chicken out of my mains above. A few champs that I have enjoyed in peaks but later dropped is Darius , Renekton , Nasus , Malzahar , MasterYi . Someone on the forums said I might generally like 'burst-dps' champions.
