Turncoat – The Thrice-Damned Traitor(s)

Personal reviews:

“Oh my god it’s like Shaco but WORSE!”

“This champion’s existence tilts me. Just… oh my god someone ban it.”

“So help me if they ult right now I am done.”

All quotes by You (DUN DUN DUN) from the FUTURE! ZileanEkko :"GASP!"

And a tidbit of lore:

“Captain, the information we got from the source appears to be true. We paid Jayce for his trouble, but kept his sister’s share.”

Gangplank grunted in displeasure. “What?”

The room went silent. Surely he wasn’t upset at their greed, he didn’t give a damn about…

“I know damn well Jayce has no sister. You damn fools, ye been swindled! This comes out of your pockets, and if you don’t find that man it’ll come out of yer gut too!”

The sound of a gunpowder explosion in the distance rocked the boat, and the crew flew with newfound speed towards its source, and away from the far more terrifying pirate they worked for.

Turncoat is the name given to a pair of twins, one man, one woman, who make a living lying, cheating, and swindling everyone they meet. They play both sides of every conflict they find, and sometimes create new ones just for the sport of it. They routinely borrow or steal the names of other notable individuals for their purposes, benefiting from other people’s reputations and soiling it in the process. No one that has ever met them has enjoyed the experience.

Passive: Thrice-Damned. Turncoat has the ability to switch teams with two abilities, and with that comes the ability to gain extra gold from stealing part of the other team’s share from turret deaths and bounties, but also the ability to gain credit for dragons and barons. As a result, Turncoat gains slightly less than the normal benefit from those buffs and they don’t last as long when they’re timed. Also, cashing in on a bounty earned by Turncoat gives the enemy team back some extra gold, to make up for gold “stolen.” This also prevents Turncoat's allied team members cashing in on Turncoat's bounty to deny the enemy team gold (It will count as an execute). Note: when switching teams, Turncoat also switches from one twin to the other. If you’re playing as the man, you take the form of the woman when you switch to the other team.

Q: Cross. This ability begins as a melee range strike that causes Turncoat to switch teams, swiping a (previously friendly) minion, or a jungle monster or large monster. If this kills the enemy minion, gold is not gained, only denied for the enemy team. Then cross can be used again within 2.5 seconds, switching back to the original team, and dealing damage to an enemy minion or player. If the second cross isn’t used in time, Turncoat reverts back to the original team. At level 2, this ability gains a short-range teleport on both strikes. At level 3, it can be used on friendly players, potentially cashing in on a teammate’s bounty, and claiming 1/6th of it for yourself. (this delay is mainly to prevent the ability from being spammed early on to abuse short death timers)

W: Illicit sightstones. This ability allows Turncoat to ward brushes and the river with illegal mandrake wards, wards that do not grant vision to the team but ping the map when an enemy champion gets near. If an enemy champion stays in the warded bush for a few seconds, the mandrake wards begin shrieking, interfering with that champion’s ability to stay hidden in the brush.

E: Devil’s due. This ability buffs Turncoat’s next two basic attacks or Cross attacks, causing increased damage and causing those attacks to stop the target’s movement (not preventing movement like a root but just ending the one movement command they might be doing). If used immediately with Cross, the first attack won’t bring a teammate below 1 hp. But they will still hate you.

R: Double Cross. This ability causes Turncoat to temporarily switch to the other team, with Cross working in reverse from normal (how confusing is that) and for the duration, Cross has no cooldown. If a Baron or Dragon is scored, and Turncoat is temporarily on that team, Turncoat gains that buff, but only for himself/herself, not for the entire team. Turncoat can (accidentally, I swear) get the last hit on a major objective for the enemy team, which is regrettable, but these things happen when you’re a damned traitor.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q) WHAT THE HELL! A) Well, that’s not really a question, but yeah. Yeah. I know, I’m damned evil.

Q) This is seriously the most tilting champion concept I’ve ever seen, how do you prevent someone from intentionally feeding on a new LEVEL? A) Well, you can’t really stop those people, and I think there’s an element here that belongs in a unique champion kit so that it can be rare and still relevant.

Q) This is awfully similar to Shaco. Was that intentional? A) A little bit, yeah. But that’s not the only one. Shaco is a little nuts when he gets going but falls off hard if he’s not having a good day. Like they say, if there’s a Shaco on your team, they’re either amazing or they’re bronze. I wanted to see if I could make a champion that wasn’t as reliant on raw stats – like Kindred, their ult is relevant even if they fall behind, and with this one, it dramatically changes the way a team handles trading objectives. Suddenly a team can’t reliably say “okay you take dragon we get baron” - because if Turncoat has the baron buff that means both teams have the buff which is just WEIRD.

Q) Okay… so, what about URF? A) I think you’re gonna have to write down the team you started on and just consider it a success if you’re the last one standing.

Skin concepts:

  1. base skin, as the man
  2. base skin, as the woman
  3. yin/yang, possibly starting off as yin regardless of gender, and switching to yang when “other team.”
  4. Damned Traitor (slightly more literal) – demonic looking! Because Fuck You, metaphors!
  5. Doublelift – changes from CLG to TSM colors! Still can’t get out of groups though.
  6. Demacian uniform/Noxian Uniform.

I can picture this champ being at home in midlane or the jungle. As a midlaner, the main draw is that you can safely deny cs to the enemy laner once you’re level 2 as long as you don’t try to push too hard, but if you do push under turret, your ability to dive is bonkers, because that turret isn’t going to hit you when your q is up. This could be your strongest asset or your downfall, because hugging the enemy turret makes you such a jungle magnet, and your own jungler probably can’t follow you.

That being said, if you ARE the jungler, well, ham is the meal of the day. And when you’re ganking Lux? Thanks for the shields!

And just think how exciting it’s going to be when Faker is on your team!

Quick summary: major feature – two abilities, Cross and Double Cross, which allow you to switch teams. An **underloaded **kit, with only one passive, and that passive is all negative. Kalista: "GASP!" The potential for the sickest, most amazing plays. Get shielded or healed by enemy abilities, then take them out and force the enemy team off baron or dragon from the other side of the map. Janna Nami Lux : "GASP!" Bonus vision-related information and pings on the map to track enemy movement. Nidalee Rengar : "GASP!" Some damned awesome puns. Phreak, Teemo : "GASP!"

Strong against: Malzahar, Zyra, Kalista, Nunu, and other characters who help to form teams that can easily focus Baron and Elder Dragon. Thanks to Turncoat, those characters cannot just force the objective and wait for the enemy team to come to them while remaining at full health./ Turncoat gives their team the ability to let that team grab baron, and counter the baron buff with a baron buff (which won’t last as long, but possibly long enough), which means they have to focus two lanes to maximize their baron buff effect, which means they have to split up, and those champions are not solo split pushers…

Weak against: Bard, Taliyah, Jarvan IV, Anivia, Trundle… Oh, hey, it’s the troll your teammates team comp. Their signature abilities don’t give a damn about what team you’re on. That wall is a damn wall, and you’re not going through it. Get out of here with your Hitman disguise. You’re no 47.

Neutral against: Skill. Individual player skill is not going to be diminished against this champ. You don’t get to pull out any stealth tricks and you don’t get to come out of nowhere against anyone without holding back your combat potential. You can use your abilities to know where the enemy team is at any moment but when you do, they know where you are and they’re tracking you too. The gains you get from your abilities are significant, but the costs are high and meaningful. If you’re truly confident in your player skill, this is the high water mark to prove it.
