Varine, the Hydra Merchant PRIMARY: Marksman/SECONDARY: Support

APPEARANCE: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/a/a1/Red_Team_Shopkeeper.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140705051214

Varine appears like the Red Team's shopkeeper, only he wears many notches and loops and bags to carry his items for sale and his loot. Additionally he also has a large sack that he lugs around, containing the hydra heads who have their heads sticking out of the bag, with one red, blue and gold one (with a spiritual look). and also thinner

BACKGROUND: With the release of Illaoi, one of her quotes were- "The kraken, the serpent, the hydra. A god's appearance is limited only by those observing it." From this I thought, what if there were different idols that others had found and each utilised the serpent, or in this case, the hydra, gods. I made Varine a merchant-like character because I hoped it would stray a bit from what could be associated with normal League and hydras in general.

OVERVIEW: Deceptively difficult to play right, Varine is a versatile but odd marksman to bring to a team. Wielding a hydra idol that he uses to fire small sprit bolts, after discovering it on one of his many trading adventures, Varine seeks to increase his wealth with the mystical hydra idol and its gods, Lyssa, Adephagiss and Plutoss, who's only intention is to serve the ones who free them from their spiritual prison.

ABILITIES: >Passive: Hydra’s Last Sin- Varine houses a three headed hydra god at his disposal. Each head represents Wrath, Gluttony or Greed, named Lyssa, Adephajiss and Plutoss respectively. Depending on which hydra head was last used to attack, Varine has double the attack speed, with every second attack instead being the hydra head. They do not deal any damage. WRATH: Applies Ruin to enemies hit by him making Varine’s next basic attack on them to deal 10 + (4 x champion level) physical damage. GLUTTONY: Each basic attack executed by Adephajiss, causes an enemy to be inflicted by Weight, which makes them deal 10% less damage to all allies and slows them by 5% for 1 second. GREED: Each attack stacks Hoard on enemy champions. At 3 hoard stacks, Plutoss’ next basic attack detonates the stacks to reduce the enemy’s magic resist and armour by 15 for 3 seconds and to gain 5 gold, accumulating in his hoard. However, whenever Varine dies, enemies loot an extra 20 gold from him.

NOTE: Please try to ignore the numbers and focus on the concept intead.

>**Q: Advancing Wrath- **Varine fires a shot, commanding Lyssa to rush down a line dealing damage to all enemies caught, which slowly expands in size as Lyssa gets closer to the end, like a thin cone. Lyssa also deals increasing damage depending on when the enemy is hit. At the start of the rush, Lyssa deals 40/70/100/130/160 (+30% Total AD), which gradually increased towards the end, where she deals 80/110/140/180/210 (+40% Total AD). Applies Ruin to inflicted enemies.

(55/60/65/70/75 Mana) (9/8.5/8/7.5/7 Cooldown) (900 Range)

>W: Shielding/Crushing Gluttony- Varine commands Adephajiss to go in front of and shield either him or an allied champion, blocking several projectiles before only making them do reduced damage. When reactivated, Adephajiss bounds in front of the ally champion to deal 35/65/95/125/155 (+35% Bonus AD) to enemies in an arc shaped area, slowing them by 12/14/16/18/20% for 1.5 seconds.

(45/50/55/60/65 Mana) (14/13.5/13/12.5/12 Cooldown)(700 Range)(600 Leap Range)

>E: Grasping Greed – PASSIVE: Varine gains an extra item slot that he cannot use for himself. He additionally loots gold from enemy champions with this skill. Gold looted from this skill is stored in Varine’s hoard (NOT HIS TOTAL GOLD). Varine can buy an item from the shop that he can store in this extra slot. Casting this skill on an ally gives them the item to use, only if the ally accepts it, if not the item can be refunded at the shop. ACTIVE: Varine targets an enemy unit and signals for Plutoss to attack them dealing (10 x champion level) (+ 55% Total AD) physical damage. Enemy units that Plutoss passes through on the way to the targeted enemy are dealt 20% reduced damage. Varine loots 1 gold from each enemy hit, accumulating in his hoard.

(40/40/40/40/40) (10/9.5/9/8.5/8 Static Cooldown) (1000 Range)

>R: Idol of the Hydra- Calling on the power of the hydra gods from his mystic idol, Varine gains a temporary empowerment for 8/9/10 seconds. During this time, Varine cannot cast his other skills. This ability modifies the Ruin, Weight and Hoard debuffs. Varine gains 50 basic attack range and his basic attacks command all hydra heads to autonomously attack the enemy as well, dealing a bonus 30/50/70 (+10% bonus AD) physical damage. Everytime the hydra heads attack the target enemy, they also apply the Ruin, Weight and Hoard debuffs. (100/100/100 Mana)(100/95/90 Cooldown)

LORE:

Born into a Bilgewater family of merchants, Varine had accepted that his life would be hard, but at least money making from the moment he was born. As Varine grew into a fine young merchant, he decided to go to a remote, but inhabited, island not too far off Bilgewater to hopefully gain more profit and to find new things to sell. Arriving on the island, Varine was greeted by a native elder, giving him a ceremonial welcome. Then came the priestess, Illaoi, holding a large, menacing idol in one hand and holding out the other to welcome Varine. "You observe, but do not take from what is ours." Illaoi strictly told Varine. "Our beliefs rely heavily on a test, we will accept you, but you are not in motion. Your false desire for material possession, we can tell you truly want something else..." In truth, Varine wanted freedom to do and be whatever he wants, but as he had accepted a life as a merchant, he never strove to have it. Varine simply ignored Illaoi, but thanked her, as he walked through the island, seeking people to trade and sell with. After a while, Varine stumbled across a waterfall, and from behind it, a faint gold glimmer caught his eye. Varine carefully slipped through the thundering water to come across a giant cave, leading to nowhere but containing a spherical idol possessing three holes of a red, blue and gold colour on top of it. There was a lock on the idol, but it was worn and brittle so Varine broke it, in hopes of being able to sell the idol for a large profit. As the seal broke, three beams spiritual energy shot out of the holes, each revealing to be a dragon-like head. The head growled, and as if through telepathy communicated to Varine through his mind. "We are the Ssssinned Hydrasss..." the red head hissed, "Lyssa, Adephagiss and me, Plutoss..." the gold one then spoke. "We were trapped in that horrid prison by Illaoi and the Nagakabouros for commiting a sin, Lyssa - Wrath, me, Adephagiss - Gluttony and Plutoss - Greed..." the blue one explained. Together in a disturbing tone, they snarled- "You are now our masterrrr, you have freed us and we will join you to help your deepest desire for helping us get ours, freedom..." Varine quickly placed the idol in his ransack and ran out, he knew the hydras' were devoted to him and so he decided not to sell it and instead use the hydras to gain presence and wealth in Bilgewater. Consumed by his wishes, Varine did not care how, now he cared only for money in order to fulfill a dream he didn't even know yet. Running past the docks and into his boat, he was noticed by Illaoi. "You have freed the stagnant hydras, they have done no good, come back and return the idol at once!" she yelled. Tentacles rose from the sea, surrounding the boat as Illaoi raised her idol. Suddenly, the hydra heads lashed out, rendering the tentacles subdued and saving Varine. "Your intentions are ours master..." Now carrying a grudge, Illaoi now seeks Varine and the Hydras of Sin, while Varine attemps to accomplish his clouded dreams through profit and recognition.

MORE TO COME! :D Any criticism is welcome!

Hi!

I wanted to drop in and provide some feedback.

First off, I wanted to say that I had never even noticed what that shopkeeper looked like O_O Also, it would be interesting to know what exactly this species is! It's too bad you didn't try to give a small origin story of their species, I would have enjoyed that ^_^

Secondly, I like the idea of this guy wielding a 3 headed idol to attack. Minor gripe : it seems weird to me that he'd be an AD carry instead of a mage, even if he was more of an attack speed mage who uses his AAs a lot, but I guess we need more diversity in the AD carry group! In that sense he's kinda like Ezreal.

Now onto the kit.

Passive I'm not sure I understand how you switch heads? Is it by using abilities, because of it is it doesn't seem like you have a lot of control over witch head you use because it imposes an additional constraint on how/when you want to use your abilities. As for the effects themselves, they seem fine for the most part, except... Well why does he have double attack speed? Wouldn't it be simpler to just have the Hydra heads attack and apply an effect when you attack? Sorta like how Lulu's Pix shoots whenever she attacks. Because visually it would be very odd to have an attack deal no damage. Also, I'm a bit worried balance wise about the prospect of this guy using Hurricane and applying a 10% damage reduction on 3 members of the enemy team. That's an enormous amount of power.

W I'm not sure it's wise to have projectile block on an AD carry, but I do have to say that ''eating'' projectiles makes a lot of sense thematically for Gluttony. I'm not sure I understand why there's a secondary effect that deals damage and slows. I think it would maybe be more fitting to have a shielding mechanic of some sort and then if that shield is consumed, Varine gains a buff. Ex : Varine's W places a spellshield on himself or a friendly target for a short period of time (so you still have pretty good utility for an AD carry). If the spellshield is broken, Varine gains a buff.

E The passive seems cool, but if I understand this right, you can only give items that you bought with gold from your hoard and not your ''real'' gold reserves, meaning you can only buy small items. Overall, it seems like a somewhat strange mechanic and I'm not really sure I see why it's there. The idea of generating more gold is cool, though. Maybe instead of giving items to allies, Varine can have a special item in his inventory, his Idol, that you could upgrade in the shop. And/or (but this is getting a bit convoluted) Varine keeps his hoard mechanic and this special gold (which you could rename to something else, like GP's Krakens) can be used to upgrade the Idol not to give it more stats, but to improve certain unique aspects of his kit, say his passive effects or active abilities.

For the active part I'm not sure I understand why the damage scales with champion levels instead of ability ranks.

R This ability seems rather... well bland. Locking yourself out of all your abilities would certainly feel bad, especially considering that's your ultimate, unlike say Rumble who is punished for overheating, but also can choose to overheat for that instant damage steroid while all his abilities are on cooldown. I'd think that using the Idol's three heads at the same time would result in some cataclysmic event, not just a simple steroid :|
