[Champion Concept] Oamalea, The Ribbon and The Noose

In a time long past, there lived a peerless warrior; chosen by kin and trial to bring about the destruction of the self-perpetuating scourge of mindless beast and corrupted man that preyed upon the denizens of her homeland. Blessed with the ability to comprehend and embody the magic that fuelled the growth of these creatures, the crusade that this warrior wrought upon the countryside served to bolster both her strength and allure; a swaying noose to complement the magic that so enticed the veracious appetite of the monsters she had been tasked to destroy.

The journey was arduous and fraught with terror; the only solace the warrior had, the gentle hum of the ancient energies that collected and coursed her mortal frame. Even as her hairs blackened and her skin paled, the melody numbed the warrior's anxiety; for her duty was a grand one.

In the end, she would be approached by her Master and struck down - that the magics imprisoned inside her might be reseeded and re-purposed before she succumbed to their corrupting influences. Not the first to complete her duty, but evermore the last.

... Or so the story had been recounted, until - much like the society that borned it - the tale faded into history...

Naming Method Taeallam means to learn in Arabic. Read backwards, the latter half of the word resembles "Mallea" - a name that references honey. In the same breath, "Matea" means Gift of God. The two names were originally intended to exist in tandem (until I decided it looked silly), symbolising both her nature as a baited blade, and providence as a divine champion. Dropping one L for aesthetic purposes, I added an O to the beginning of her name to signify the word "The" (Greek), then an A to build the first 3 letters of "Amani" - a name loosely signifying aspiration, wishes and promises.

The result? Oamalea (Pronounced: wah-mah-lay-ah) - an indecipherable cluster of inferences condensed into 4 short syllables. Insight and allure; Aspiration and devastation! For Oamalea, beckoned to war by the whims of those who legitimised her, self-sacrifice seemed a fitting end to an epic saga...

... perhaps that was the reason the story was told in the first place.

Oamalea is an omen; the magics that course her veins both captivating and terrifying. To look upon her is to steel one's breath; whereas to be struck by her is to be deprived of it.

#LORE OVERVIEW

A dexterous and determined fighter, Malea was a born prodigy of combat - a great talent, destined to be an even greater warrior. Day in, day out, the girl was in training; rarely seen without a weapon and consumed with a passion so fixated on war that her day-to-day life suffered as a result.

Very few of Malea's peers liked her, even before the announcement. But when the girl claimed a desire to be Chosen - the divine blade that represented her society and dispelled the chaotic magics that plagued the land, around it - it was akin to a scandal. What little encouragement she'd had to begin with flickered out, like a dying candle - and the girl spent the next seven years of her life as a relative outcast.

Time passed, and the day of the Trial approached - a 24 hour period of combat that would culminate in the final tournament to decide the face of the Chosen for the coming decade. Malea's training intensified, as did her scorn. Her attempts to apply for the tournament were consistently impeded and, as the final deadline approached, her resolve began to weaken beneath the crushing weight of the words of those who ired her.

Malea gave up, and wandered the streets of her city in a grief-stricken stupor. It would be amidst an unbecoming alley that she would find an old fortune teller; the first to support her dream in nearly a decade. As the conversation between the two unfolded, the woman drew Malia to a small hut, in shambles, and gave her an ultimatum.

"3 wishes; symbolised by this token that you may wear around your neck. What you speak, will become reality, in due time. But heed my warning girl, the fates have already aligned. Disrupting the flow of time takes time, and the consequences may very well be vast."

But Malea was not the kind to hesitate.

... Make me strong. The strongest. And the most famous Chosen, ever. I want... I want people to know my name forever...

While functioning on the Rift, Oamalea will be perpetually orbited by a glowing wreath of either white or red magic, visually represented on the ground around her (like a long shadow). Choosing a starting point at random, the wreath will slowly wind its way around Oamalea in a clockwise motion until completing a 360° circuit, upon which point a new wreath will strike up and start the process, anew. Circuits take 15/14/13/12/11/10 seconds to complete - reduced by 0.5 secs for each successful standard attack - and alternate between White and Red magic. The first wreath will always be a white one.

  • WHITE LIGHT that makes contact with enemy minions or non-epic monsters demoralises them for as long as they remain within its influence, reducing their damage output by 8/11.5/15% while under the effect. Completing a circuit of white magic extends this effect to hostile champions for up to 3.5 seconds and will cause Oamalea to instantly heal 3.5/5/6.5% Max Health + 1.75% missing health for each affected hostile inside the wreath's influence at the moment that the circuit completes.

  • RED LIGHT that makes contact with enemy minions or non-epic monsters slows both their Attack Speed and Movement Speed by 15/20/25% for as long as they remain in its influence. Completing a circuit of red magic extends this effect to hostile champions for up to 3.5 seconds, additionally doubling the duration, effect and mana cost of any abilities used by Oamalea during this time. ⁦

Successively striking a single target 5 times with Oamalea's standard attacks or abilities will attract the attention of Oamalea's master, drawing his Signet of Judgement to form around the target over the next 2.75 seconds. Upon completion, the signet will embed itself into the ground around the target; persisting for 2 seconds and dealing 125/210/295/380/465 (+0.55AP) magic damage to any hostiles in range. Oamalea may strike targets standing on the Signet of Judgement for a one-time bonus of 15/55/110/175/245 (+0.3AP) magic damage.

  • THE CATCH: Damaging an enemy with any of Oamalea's abilities or standard attacks while the signet is still forming will impair the judgement of Oamalea's master, reducing Signet of Judgement's total damage output by 25% for each hit that they suffer.

  • May only activate once per Celestial Wreath circuit.

  • Does NOT benefit from the double-effect bonus upon completing a Red circuit.

  • Current strike tally will reset after 5 seconds.

Oamalea shuts her eyes, dampening her focus. For the next 1.5 seconds, the Wreath of magic that surrounds her will begin to visually vibrate as 5 ribbon-like lengths of magic stretch away from the circle. Each ribbon acts independently, and will 'lock on' to its own (Champion>Monster>Minion) within a small cone. At the end of the duration, the ribbons will snap out toward their respective targets, dealing 55/100/145/190/235 (+0.4 AP) magic damage and applying the passive debuff effects of Celestial Noose for 1.5 seconds.

  • Passive debuffs will be based on the colour of the ribbon, which will in turn be based on the colour of the segment of wreath it strikes from. Ribbons will change from white to red (or vice versa) if their segment does.
  • Ribbons will always stretch out from the same 5 fixed points on the Wreath, somewhat resembling a star pattern and/or the corners of a standard pentagon.

Oamalea draws her blade close to her chest, bathing it in magic and empowering the next standard attack she makes on an enemy champion. Empowered attacks deal 20/55/90/125/160 (+0.18 AP) magic damage to the initial target. Hostiles adjacent to or behind the initial target will additionally be knocked aside. If Oamalea casts Isolation while her blade is already bathed in magic, she will store an extra empowered attack (max: 3 empowered attacks stored in this way). Mana cost is deducted upon strike. 1.5 seconds must pass between each empowered strike.

  • The initial target will not be knocked aside. Similarly, targets that are knocked aside will not take damage.
  • Striking during a Red Circuit will apply the relevant mana/damage increase and knock targets up instead.
  • Empowered attacks do not run on a timer, and will not expire.

Aesthetic Note: Upon storing 3 empowered attacks, Oamalea's blade will glow white-hot. Oamalea will adjust her stance accordingly, hiding the blade behind her back so as to not obscure her vision.

Before all else, Oamalea is a warrior: decisive, dutiful and determined to a fault. Both her voice and her stance convey a staggering self-confidence, all this culminating in an almost frustrating air of smugness. When she speaks, her words are cold and cruel - a habit retained from the scorn she faced upon having her dreams of becoming Chosen, dashed. Oamalea! Solid proof that girls can do it too! Admittedly, she did have a little bit of help from a fate-spitting-in-the-face-of ritual amulet (lore spoilers), but everybody has a weak moment now and again.

This concept isn't quite done, but I wanted to post it and see what everything looks like. As of this moment, the Lore, Playstyle Overview, In-game quotes and - apparently - the Closing Statement all need to be sorted out or rewritten. If you want to see what a completed concept looks like, why not check out Ceilidh, The Dancing Penance? She dances, catches lightning strikes, then HURLS them at her enemies. What's not to like?

I'm not sure if I'm gonna throw Oamalea into a faction. She seems like she suits Noxus. That probably means I'll think up some way to make her marry Garen or something. Katerina can go suck a muffin. Defying Expectations!! In any case, I'll be adding onto this over time. Optimistically, I'll even have a quality closing statement! I mean, I never do - but I might! So, until then:

Stand back, I'm a certified hater!

You have way too many words to describe an ability. Let me summarize for you without the numbers:

Passive: Generates an aura that alternates between reducing the damage of nearby non-champions and the attack and move speed of nearby non-champions. Every so often, sped up by attacking, cause the aura to affect champions, grant Oamalea either healing or doubled ability effect, damage, and cost based on the aura, and switch.

Q: Passively causes stacks to build on targets hit by Oamalea's attacks. On six stacks, marks the target for a delayed ground nuke that Oamalea can attack again to trigger additional damage. Attacking while the mark is still active reduces the damage. When activated, briefly stealthes, cleanses, and gains a movement speed boost, and causes the next attack to ignore barriers.

W: Leashes onto up to 5 targets in a cone. After a delay, damages and applies the current passive debuff to these targets.

E: The next autoattack deals bonus damage and knocks away enemies from the target. Can store up to 3 charged autoattacks.

R: Doubles the range and cycle speed of the passive for a time.

Alright. Now that that's much better to read...

This champion has a bunch of mechanics on her, especially the Q, that make her a total headache to play and play against, except that in reality she's honestly pretty terrible.

As an overall view, you made a fighter that uses AP. Current fighter itemization is heavily weighed toward AD for a reason - Nashor's Tooth doesn't give you nearly the same boost to your autoattacks even at full build as a couple of good AD items like Black Cleaver and Bloodthirster (if you're really ahead). You're stuck with gimped autoattacks now, and have to compete against champions who don't have that disadvantage.

The passive is both incredibly useless and extremely frustrating due to the terribly long delay in uptime between effects, the complete lack of offensive benefit to Oamalea, the rather small magnitude of these effects, the requirement to be in melee range, the fact that it has the dreaded attack speed slow for free (a slow effect, mind, that's only on a select few, very old champions such as Nunu, Anivia, and Malphite), the number of rules on the whole thing, the doubled cost quickly starving Oamalea of mana if she's reckless, the general lack of agency in when you get that double damage so you can actually do anything useful...This is like a laundry list of what not to have in a fighter passive. It doesn't help Oamalea do anything other than jungle (better served by actives) and maybe troll ADCs (who will be significantly aggravated and kill you anyways). Even if you get the extra damage, one good stun means she misses out on what's roughly a 15 second window of opportunity. At max level, anyways - before that, you're irrelevant for even longer.

The Q is like a marvelous trainwreck of overloaded design. I can summarize your other abilities in two sentences, but this horror demands four sentences. That's a problem right there. Anyways, it's built up by hitting an enemy 6 times (you forgot your CC, so this is never happening), broadcasts over a whopping 2.75 seconds that this jerk is about to get dunked on (giving him ample time to run away), nerfs itself if you keep attacking this target (giving him ample time to CC and kill you instead due to the dramatic drop in total damage), and boosts your next attack on anyone blasted by the mark and still standing on it (okay sure). Alright, it's pretty crazy and totally unintuitive in design, but I guess you could tweak it as an act-

wait that was its passive

why is this mess a passive

The Q's ACTIVE is only useful in niche cases. You can't cast while stunned or silenced, both of which end you. The speed boost is stupid given that 0.5 seconds isn't even enough time to run anywhere. There's no reason to actually stealth on this champion, nor is there any reason to skip those select few champion interactions and cause meaningless complexity for a few niche cases. Contrast with Kha'Zix, who stealths to refresh his passive and buy himself some time to reposition, and as such gets 1 second of stealth, twice, prior to evolving it. Oamalea has no such benefit from positioning considering all she can do is blindly charge the enemy with her terrible autoattacks.

The W is comparatively less complicated. It's a fine ability by itself (I'll pretend its range matches Mordekaiser's E - which it should, that is a much better range than a slight extension of your tiny aura), but Oamalea's kit can't actually support it due to the complete lack of gap-closing and CC she has, making it easy to break the leash. For someone who's all AP ratios, the overall damage on this is really low.

The E is an on-hit modifier with a terribly long cooldown. The stocking mechanic is useless - if you can actually stock three of those, you're either running to lane or being aggressively useless in the fight. The stupid cooldown means this is really bad early on, and the meh-ish added effect means it's not a good skill to leave at 1 either.

The ult is singularly the most boring, disappointing thing you could have on a fighter. No flashy execute, no awesome powerup, no amazing crowd control...Just a doubled aura size and effect. This is pretty much dead weight on her kit, yet somehow is so mind-bogglingly powerful it exceeds Karthus' Requiem in cooldown. For reference: you just indirectly compared your silly aura doubler to an ult that hits every champion on the other team regardless of location.

On the whole, this champion can't duel due to being trapped with crappy AP ratios, can't gank due to nonexistent CC, can't tank due to a complete lack of survivability mechanics, and overall cannot contribute without being overshadowed by literally everyone else she's competing with and several others she's not directly competing with.

While the underlying thematic and W are pretty cool, the concept as a whole communicates that you don't really get fighter design. It's a pretty flexible design space, but you need to be able to have autoattacks that hurt (AD, not AP) and either some way to close the gap that lasts longer than 0.5 seconds (1 second if the planets align) or have a good amount of survivability. You can see the high mobility in Riven and Wukong, while Garen and Darius exhibit the latter. If you don't have those, you're a pretty trash fighter since you don't do damage, can't get into range to do damage, and can't survive being at that range to do damage. I can see the passive trying to work overtime to actually provide those mechanics, but that's not nearly good enough due to how long the passive takes and how bloated the passive is with more than four different effects.

You don't play up the ribbon theme as much as you should. You could have the W (with a much longer range) fire a cone of ribbons that attach, then completely overhaul the Q into something that charges forward and does damage, but on a target with a ribbon, jumps right to that target and roots them for a brief time. That gives you gap-closing, a choice of target selection, and overall better ganking. In exchange, you lose a horribly bloated and mostly useless ability. Pretty good deal.

On a similar note, the passive should go. It's not good at all. If you're trying to stay alive, you could try a heal-over-time on killing or assisting in killing champions, with a smaller one on large monsters. Since that only works if you're getting kills, you could also instead convert the health of enemies you kill into a shield - something like Trundle and Cho'Gath's passive. That lets you lane better, and gives you a somewhat safer jungle clear.

Whatever you do, change the ult. Literally anything else is better. Try doing something with that noose you mention in your champion's title. Sounds like a delayed execute, which would be perfect.

I'll keep watching this one.

So I love the amount of work you put into this, it is very nicely put together, however I feel that there is a bit of ability bloat, aka an overloaded kit. I would highly recommend going back through and really pinpointing what role you want your champ to fill in a team comp, why people should pick them, and build their abilities around that, removing unneeded effects.

A strong example of this is the Q. Why would it have the effect of ignoring counters? This is a slightly strange mechanic that does nothing but slightly weaken a few specific champ interactions. Considering most interactions like that are based on enemy skill it really doesn't make sense to invalidate someone elses mechanical outplay. Think about the negative effect it would have on fiora players, their repost could be ignored.

I would also strongly advise against stealth, even if it is only half a second. Stealth is never a good mechanic to balance around. The damage negation is fine and I would say that with a .5 sec duration the stealth is fine but together they can cause a lot of disorientation for anyone looking at it which is bad for game clarity. I would either remove the Stealth or Invulnerability from it entirely. (Think about this in terms of Fiora repost balance. She has a 22ish? second cd on an ability that blocks dmg and cc, also dealing minor damage in a line and stunning if hit m=by hard cc. You are sacrificing .25 seconds of that for a 6 second cd and stealth. That is not balanced. I would argue at shifting the cd at all ranks up by 1-2 seconds and removing the stealth or keeping the cd and removing the invulnerability, or at least the cc invulnerability like a .5 second stealth + Kayle ult)

Once again to remove ability bloat I would remove the red circuit effect in her E.

Overall I like her kit although her passive feels a tad bit complex, perhaps try simplifying the explanation to help people understand it. The way you wrote the Q passive feels a bit strange although I think that it isn't all that complex if I am reading it correctly:

After 6 auto attacks her target gets marked. After 2.25 seconds an aoe appears around them (is it grounded like Nasus spirit fire or follow them like Brand 3rd passive stack?) This aoe does damage per second for 2 seconds. If she auto attacks an enemy in the area it does bonus damage once but reduces the damage per second?

Considering how hard it can be to get off 6 auto attacks as a melee champ with no dashes I highly recommend changing that to 5 hits and having the effect be instant as well as making the auto attack not reduce the aoe dmg. After all then you get down to an element of figuring out which one does more damage/waiting to use the auto attack. It generally isn't a good idea to have an ability that causes decision making about whether you want damage A or damage B. Having the option to trade damage for utility is good, having to figure out which of 2 options will do more damage is bad, especially when they are both part of the same ability. There is also the option to just remove the extra auto attack damage but I actually like that component because you can proc the Q passive on one person then auto a different person in the radius. Perhaps a solution is to simply have procing the Q passive instantly ready a stack of her E? I actually like that option a lot and it would be more incentive to hit someone a bunch. Although that part of the passive would have to be moved to the E so you couldn't get an E stack without a rank in E. Just something saying "Activating the Signet of Justice builds a stack of Isolation"

So the Q passive would be something along the lines of "Damaging a target 6 times with Auto attacks or abilities deals X damage in an area over 2 seconds"

While E has a passive that read "Activating the Signet of Justice builds a stack of Isolation"

That way you also aren't stacking multiple auto attack buffs on top of each other which can get messy

However I do think it is a great idea that just needs a bit of simplification and maybe a touch in the right direction. Currently all I know is that I want nashors, Trinity(maybe lich) swifty/greaves and dead mans plate. Looks like an ap attack speed bruisesr who needs movespeed and tankiness to stick to people, line up her passive, and survive long enough to get her Q passive on multiple people. A bit more optimization for that role, or direction in a different role if that isn't how you want them to be, and it would be looking good.

By the way I really want to compliment you on how nice this looks. A bit of visual effort can go a long way towards making a champ seem appealing. Keep up the good work and feel free to ask if you ever have any questions, I absolutely adore people who who put real effort into their character concepts. ;P
