[CCC] Happy Half-time!

Hey all! As I’ve been told this is about the time that the CCC starts falling flat because you’re all just sitting around waiting. Well….yeah that makes sense.

#SO.....

here I am with a few highlights I want to share. If you guys like this I’ll be sure to do a Halftime every month.

######Note: Because I’m doing this I am specifically NOT judging, but I am still organizing the whole deal. The following are cool tid-bits, shout-outs and my personal opinion and do NOT reflect how the scores currently stand.

#Lore Shout-outs

There are ok lores, good lores and then of course great lores. While I do where a writer’s hat from time to time, lores are my weaker points of interest. But that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize great writing when I see it. Although I may have to give it a few passes before it gets through my thick head.

• Hajali (& Qareen), The Fire below the Sands by Raptamei

Ok, look. I tried to write a cool, quick quip about Hajali’s lore a dozen times now. I can’t do it justice. Just read it. Be advised: it can get a bit uncomfortable at the beginning.

#Kit Shout-outs

Second verse same as the first! No matter how complicated or how simple, a few kits caught my eye. Whether is it’s a glint of hidden potential or some astounding synergy, I have to give some attention to these concepts.

• Quark the Quantum Quirk by SecretAgentHulk

Ever wanted to have a blend between a virus and a minefield? Well I didn’t know I did until I looked at Quark. A justice infused atom takes to the Rift with a nuclear arsenal, and no you’re not seeing double you’re seeing quadruple!

• Lucy, The Weeping Ripper by Nuclear Corvid

Ever get that feeling when you’re playing Shaco where you want him to stop laughing and turn the game into a horror scene? No? Well, read Lucy’s kit and think again, because shredding never has before sounded so…...fun.

#Scythes!

Seriously, what is it with you guys and scythes this month?? They’re everywhere! Can’t say I blame you though, scythes are cool. Check out these concepts to see some scythe action:

#Tips!

I’ve been going around looking at all the entries and I’m loving what I’m seeing. But that doesn’t mean they’re perfect!

So here are a few tips that a lot of you may find helpful:

• #Lore

I notice many entrants are providing rushed or stale lores. Now, I realize that sounds harsh (and it is) but I also wholeheartedly understand. Some conceptors start with the lore and the character’s personality naturally and others (like myself) come from the side of the abilities or equipment. That makes writing lore difficult because, simply, it’s not what you’re excited about. And that’s fine! But at the same time you can’t skimp here if you want to get a good concept out. Think about it, the lore of a concept is the only way we can see as readers can see your champion as a champion and not as a bundle of stats and mechanics. When the lore is done we ideally should see the same person you do.

This does not mean to write more however, sometimes thats the worst thing you can do. I’ve seen better written lores from ten sentences than a 3-page novel. Take your time, really bunker down, and try to show your character instead of explaining them. If that makes sense.

A great tip I got from a writing class was this: If I can have a full-length conversation with your character, it’s written well. If I have to ask --you--, the writer, what he/she/it would do in this or that situation, you need to go back and try again.

• #Formatting

This is always an issue, whether the author is a week experienced or has been writing concepts for years. The Boards migration didn’t really help either.

Formatting isn’t specifically a category and you can’t net points from it directly, but I cannot stress to you how nice it is as a judge to have a concept that’s readable and not a block of text. It’s refreshing! At best, good formatting can net you some Effort points. Bad formatting however, can make judges miss important aspects of a kit, or clever quips that may have garnered a laugh, or even entire categories if it’s seriously lacking any spacing. Not to mention if a judge has to ‘survive’ reading through your concept they’re probably not going to want to come back to it to see any changes.

Take a look at Halaji (& Qareen), The Fire Below the Sands if you’d like a good example of great formatting in an entry this month. That’s what you want to have yours look like, or at least close. If you want additional tips go to my post here, espeically if you’re finding the Board’s formatting difficult to work with.

• #Bonus category

Want to know a great way to get a few free points? Make a new years resolution list for your champion! This is the bonus category for this month and can count up to 10 points out of the 100. It’s quick and easy so there’s no reason not to!
