Volux, The Thief in the Shadows

rmreagle·5/8/2015, 4:31:46 PM·6 votes·2,799 views

Passive - On champion kill or assist, fallen foes drop a coin equal to 5/10/15% of the their current gold (this amount is deducted from them). Volux gains this gold if he picks up the coin before they respawn, or else this gold is refunded to the champion that dropped it upon respawning at their fountain.

Q - Tools of the Trade (weapon toggle similar to Jinx) ------- NO COST ------- 0.9 Second Cooldown

Twin Fangs - MELEE form (125 Range) - Volux attacks with both his twin daggers on each Auto-Attack, striking twice and dealing 60/70/80/90/100% AD each and applying on hit effects twice.

Serpent's Bow - RANGED form (500 Range) - Volux unfurls his bow and attacks from range. His Attack Speed and Damage is lowered to 75/80/85/90/100%

W - Taste of Venom ------- 50/55/60/65/70 Mana ------- 15/13/11/9/7 Second Cooldown

Volux coats his weapon with a deadly poison, dealing 15/30/45/60/75 (+ 100% AP) magic damage over the next 5 seconds and slowing the target by 10/15/20/25/30% for the duration. This effect is applied twice when using twin fangs. If used on a target already affected by two stacks of Taste of Venom it will refresh the duration.

**E - Grappling Hook **------- 80 Mana ------- 18/16/14/12/10 Second Cooldown

FIRST CAST: Volux spins his grappling hook, gradually increasing its range (600 - 1200) over the next 2 seconds.

Volux can still move while channeling, but CAN'T use his other abilities or attack, and his movement speed is slowed by 20%. After 4 seconds, Grappling hook is automatically cancelled, refunding half of its mana cost and cooldown.

SECOND CAST - Volux throws out his grappling hook in a straight line attaching to the first UNIT or terrain struck pulling Volux to the target. While mid-air, Volux CAN activate his other abilities. If grappling hook strikes an enemy unit it deals 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 150 (+ 25% AD) physical damage.

If grappling hook makes contact with a coin, it will immediately return, pulling the coin back to Volux.

R - One with the Shadows ------- 100 Mana ------- 120/100/80 Second Cooldown

Volux becomes one with the shadows for 3/5/7 seconds. During this time all skill shots pass through him with no effect and Volux ignores unit collision. He also gains 50 Movement Speed and 30/40/50 Bonus AD.

GAMEPLAY

A mid-lane assassin, Volux is able to use his bow as a farming tool and for trading, but as his secondary weapon it's lower attack speed and damage at early levels makes it the inferior choice when compared to the damage he can put out with his twin daggers, however he must get close to his foe in order to use them. The applied effect of his W is useful from range, but doubly so when applied in melee range. His grappling hook allows him to all in or escape provided he has a clear line of sight to his target, as ANY unit, friend or foe, will stop the grappling hook and pull Volux to that location. His ultimate allows for some unique counterplay to skillshots, but still leaves him vulnerable to targeted abilities and auto-attacks, while also providing him with additional chasing or escaping speed and some extra power. It is best used toward the end of the fight for the extra damage to secure a kill while still being able to capitalize on the movement speed bonus to return to safety. If able to secure kills in lane, he ican gain a significant boost of gold and deny his opponent some, but it does require him to follow up on top his victim after they expire and before they respawn. As such, the gold boost from fallen enemies that die from the lingering effects of his poison or an ignite may go unclaimed. In teamfights especially, if Volux is does not deal the finishing blow himself in melee range, then it may be quite difficult to acquire this prize unless the fight is won or he has his grappling hook available.

Recommended skill order - R --> Q --> W --> E

LORE

An ophan of Demacia, Volux grew up on the streets and quickly learned that in order to survive he would need to steal, and do so without being caught. One night, after stealing a few precious trinkets in the night and some bread from a wealthy household, he was caught in the act by their young daughter. Instead of raising an alarm, she smiled at him and let him flee. From then on, he would return to her window at night, and despite their vastly different backgrounds, a love grew between them. However, when tragedy struck her family, she became obsessed with a quest for vengeance, and she withdrew from him. As Volux grew, so did his skills, and what began from a need to survive quickly became a passion. He roamed Runeterra seeking bigger and bigger prizes, not for the gold, but for the challenge and thrill of acquiring them. No treasure, however, could fill the void left by his lost childhood love. He returned to Demacia, to find her, but she had now become fully commited to her quest, and he could see that to her he was nothing but a distant memory of a past life. He thought he might win back her affection by applying his skills to her cause, and so traveled to distant Ionia in the hopes of stealing a relic of tremendous dark power. He infiltrated the Kinkou Monastery and came upon the ornate box he sought, but was unprepared for what actually lay inside. As he opened the box, the shadows leapt from inside and surrounded him, and the Master of the temple revealed himself. Thinking himself surely doomed, he was surprised when the shadows that surrounded him aided his escape. After his escape, he soon realized the shadows that saved him have indeed doomed him, but not in the way he thought. They whisper to him in the night threatening to take over his sanity. The dark power a part of him, fighting for control. In seeking to aid his love, he has become a part of that which she hates most, and has lost her forever. On the run from the Master and his order, lost to his love, and forever threatened by the shadows threatening control of his mind, the only thing that satisfies and keeps them at bay is what he was always best at, Thieving in the Shadows.

RIOT: I relinquish any and all legal claim to the design and concept of this character, and would only ask that you keep the name if any iteration of this champion were ever to be brought into the league of legends. Also, I would happily work for Riot in a heartbeat, consider this, my first champion concept, my application, lol.

you took someone's own generic thief artwork and used it in a concept...

I could tune the dmg values down on the Q daggers to 55/60/65/70/75% AD each. So that at max rank each AA would be dealing 150% dmg. His other dmg values aren't that high though, as he will do most of his dmg from AA's.

His passive is wayyyyyy to op, he will be able to rack up way to much gold and steals it all from the team? just too much. Make it so the coin drops 5/10/15 of the gold the player has on them, (not deducted from them) and you have to click on it within some odd seconds say 2-4 to collect.

I really like the concept, 3 issues though.

  1. I see the gold-steal concept is already being talked about by others below. I like the idea, but maybe he can instead steal X gold per hit? Either that or lower the total amount, 15% per kill or assist per champion is brutal. If your team Aces their team it'd be GG pretty much right then lmao

  2. You say he is an assassin, but unlike other assassin's such as Zed and Talon, he doesn't have a reliable means of getting to a target. Talon is point and click, and he can gain a great movespeed boost via his ultimate for example. If Volux misses his E, he just failed his assassination.

  3. He doesn't have the burst to be an assassin, not until late game anyway if built full AD. Keep in mind with Talon's abilities, he can E onto someone and blow all of his abilities on them in .25 seconds. Your champions has a nice buff from his ult, his E is strictly utility (a mix between Nautilus hook and Varus arrow), which leaves his W which is a dot which lasts over 5 seconds. Your champion has similarities with Shaco, but instead of a flash that gives you stealth you have a skill-shot gap closer and your poison deals damage over time while Shaco's is instant and scales off both AD and AP. The only burst he has is from his Q, but that is not nearly enough to warrant being called an assassin.

To solve this I feel like you need either a more reliable gap closer so he can get close enough to someone to assassinate them reliably, or a way to sustain in the jungle so that in between camps he can hook into over-extended laner's lanes and take them out. I also feel like his poison should scale off of AD as well like Shaco's, otherwise the damage-over-time will be weak.

In response to your points @LifeCyclesTWA I think you do raise some legitimate concerns but some of the proposed changes I do disagree with.

  1. My initial idea for the passive was actually that he would steal gold per hit, but I felt that wouldn't make for good gameplay as he could harass and take gold with no counterplay. I think having the gold drop on death allows the opponent to retain their gold if they play smart, ward against ganks, back when low, etc. Remember that at early levels, 1-6, the % is only 5. That means even if the enemy had 2k gold you are only taking 100. At levels 7-12 2k gold nets you 200, and at 13-18 2k gold nets you 300. Yes, this can add up quickly, but the threat of such a powerful passive can be adjusted to if the opponents back and buy and don't allow themselves to get caught out and killed with that much gold. I do think I want to add in an aspect that allows the team members of fallen enemies to recover their allies coins, so that an Ace doesn't automatically result in 5 coins for Volux to pick up. Remember he does need to be alive and able to walk on top of the coin or grappling hook it.

  2. Volux's ult does give him movement speed also, and ignores unit collision. Yes his gap closing is less reliable, but he has other tools that could help him reach his target such as using his W in bow form to apply a slow from range, then ulting for the AD bonus and movement speed, enabling him to close the gap with that swing in movespeed or position for a grappling hook. If he does get on top of his target though, the power of his double striking AAs and applying on hit effects twice pack a strong punch, especially if amplified by his ult. Possible tuning of his his E could be done by not having friendly units interrupt it, but that would also hurt his escaping potential with it or repositioning. I really liked that it's a gap closer with counterplay and not 100% reliable but requires careful positioning and planning.

  3. I intentionally underpowered his other abilities because he has so much power loaded into his twin daggers if he is able to close the gap, and didn't want his W to be his main DMG but more for utility of the slow and some finishing damage if a target is able to escape while low. If this had an AD ratio, I fear he would be too strong and need power removed from his Q, where I really wanted his identity to shine as a champion that can shift between melee and ranged without an Ult being involved (i.e. Gnar/Quinn). Also, don't underestimate the power of those double daggers and on hit effects x2. A build with on hit effects and crit would make for some powerful dmg when he does close that gap.

I really don't see him as a jungler. Maybe he's not a full blown assassin like Zed or Talon, but his dmg potential is still very high, if not quite as bursty as his assassin fellows. His powerful on hit effects and mixed dmg from the W make for some interesting possible build paths.

Girl whose family was struck by tragedy... she goes on a quest for vengeance... Volux x Vayne confirmed?

Honestly, I love everything about this concept. I really want to play a thief hero, and the closest I can really get is Talon , which I normally get semi-flamed because he's not super viable.

Morgwynis5/10/2015, 3:31:55 AM1 votes

Would like to see him in the game but a channel up grapple seems a little complicated for an assassin. The range increaser won't help if you're in the middle of a fight and need to get away, a better version of his grapple would be to make it like a hybrid between Nautilus and Thresh where if it hits terrain he automatically grapples but if it hits a champion he can choose to either press it to grapple or allow it to expire.

I have to agree with other people. Having the passive actually take gold from the other player is too overpowered. I understand your point of view with the whole "makes people have to go back and not stay in lane too long" thing but at the same time you're undervaluing gold. 100g is a vision ward. 50g is a health pot (with a little left over). Taking that from one champion and giving it to another makes for too much of an unfair advantage whether "they stayed too long" or not. Killing them already robs them of gold and experience because of minions and if he's an assassin, roaming or going all in for kills, then it really isn't going to be THAT hard for him to get the coins especially if his grappling hook picks them up. Don't get me wrong, I love the bonus gold idea, just not how it takes from the other champion. I understand he's a thief so the actual stealing part seems key but like I said, killing someone already robs them of gold and experience and puts you at an advantage. Widening that advantage doesn't make for good play, it's just annoying. You'd just get too many people complaining.

I really like the concept overall and the skill ideas, though I'd want to see the numbers in play before I'd agree with any of them (especially on the melee Q). Really interesting character concept. :)

The Duo-dagger thing sounds kind of broken. Maybe make make one do half damage like yi's passive? Other than that, this is a really cool concept, especially the ult.

Hi rmreagle, I luv your champion concept idea, i like the idea of his ult.
