#Lore

”I used to set trees on fire, just to make room for the new buildings. I use to put my trash in the rivers… it was easier that way. I used to pollute the air with my machines… my chemicals. I used to do these things as I thought nature should take care of these things by itself. And it did. It did take care of it. Just not the way I thought I would.”

”So what happened uncle Zef?”

”I thought it was just like another day, but it felt different. Like I was being watched. The wind would blow harder when I would do the normal things… the things I shouldn’t have done. The leaves all seemed to point in my direction. The ground felt… alive. I didn’t understand it then. But now I do. Nature was taking care of itself. It was fighting back. It was fighting me”.

”Did you want to fight?”

”At first I did not want to fight, but I was trapped by when I tried to escape. I tried to get back home to you, Keften, but when I turned to run back home, I was stopped by a wall of rocks, rocks that have not been there before. Leaving me only one way to try and getaway. But it was towards the human shaped… thing… of nature. He was a large opposing figure made of wood. He… or it, left me no choice but to fight.”

”Is that why you have that big scar uncle? Cause you lost the fight?”

”I have a few from work. I used to be a big shot at Priggs Industries before, remember? I got injured during the time Graves escaped in the chaos… giving me a few nicks, but this was far worse than that. At first I was lashed by thick stalks from the ground sprouting from where he stood. Knowing that my only way out would be through him with this wall of rock at my back, I charged, and swung at him with my electrified baton. Just as the baton got near… some sort of barrier of sand and branches stopped the swing. I was in shock. He tiled his head, almost in an aggressive way to shame me.”

Keften got closer to the glass, slightly terrified, but intrigued by his uncle’s story.

”Next thing, he raises his cane, and plunged it through my stomach. I felt the secondary thump when it hit the ground. I had one last hope, I tried to break it. I needed to break free. It was tough, but I did eventually snap it off. Then I ran as fast as I could, as far as I could as a man with a large piece of wood splintered in him can. Now I knew the lands, and there is no sand deposits nearby, but as I ran it was tough because of the sand beneath me had slowed me down in my wounded state. I could not have been more weakened, more frightened. But I turned around to get a good look.”

”What did you see?”

”I saw the staff, the staff that I had just broken, growing back to the size it was. It was Evergrow wood. Evergrow wood is real. I believe it. Then the green eyes. They were oh so piercing. His armor, made of wood, but it gave the presence of steel. And all before I fell unconscious, he spoke to me. He said ‘I am Theogen. Nature’s Sentinel. Do not reckon with nature, or it shall reckon with you.’ We are not safe Kef… not at all”

”Ok Keften, it’s time to go. Your visitation is over,” said the security officer. “Please enjoy your day. Thank you for visiting Zaun Psychiatric 3rd Ward. Safe travels.”

”NO! NO! N no no no NO! Evergrow wood exist! It does exist! He does exists. It’s not only a fairy tale. We must STOP NOW! HE WILL COME FOR US ALL!” Please! DO NOT DESTROY NATURE!”

With ravish pounding on the protective glass, and frantic screaming, the orderlys constrained Zef, and bound him to the wall, shackled by ropes and chains.

”Why do you keep letting him tell that same story to his nephew every week,” asked an orderly to the doctor.

”Because we will know when he has improved when he changes his story. Theogen does not exists. It remains a fairy tale, a legend even. There is no proof, no evidence, and no reasoning into believing such a story. A sentient form of nature itself, fighting humans? Preposterous, I tell you!”

The doctor regained his composure, straightening the collar on his lab coat.

”When he begins to understands that, then we have made some progress. Now please, schedule next week visitation.”

”Yes doctor. Right away.”

##PASSIVE: Reclamation

Aura Based | Persistent Allied Area of Effect Buff via On Allied Unit Death Radius: 1000 / 400 / 100 ( Aura / Allied Champion / Allied Minion)

Whenever Theogen dies or an allied unit dies within a medium distance of Theogen, Theogen reclaims them to land for 5.0 seconds, creating rejuvenating Grounds of Renewal with a smaller area for allied minions and larger area for allied champions. Allied champions within the Grounds of Renewal will gain 8% / 12% / 16% / 20% Health Regeneration and Mana Regeneration.

| Levels | Percentage | |- | 1 - 5 | 8% | | 6 - 10 | 12% | | 11 - 15 | 16% | | 16 - 18 | 20% |

  • Multiple areas of Reclamation do not stack the regenerative effects.

  • The bonus regeneration effects will linger for .5 seconds after an ally leaves Grounds of Renewal.

  • Reclamation is triggered after all reanimation effects or death innate effects. For example: reanimation from Guardians Angel or Karthus’ Death Defiled passive will always trigger first, then Reclamation will trigger when those effects end and Theogen is within range.

##Q: Splinter Strike

Auto Attack Modifier | Self Targeted Debuff | Self Targeted Buff
Cooldowns: 10 / 9.5 / 9 / 8 .5 / 8 Cost: 50 Casting Time: No cast time Interrupts Movement: No

On his next auto attack within 4.0 seconds, Theogen plunges the pole end of his Dense Evergrow Wood Staff through midsection of his target, follwoing through into the ground with an additional 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30% Armor Penetration, rooting the target in place for .75 seconds.

Theogen then splinters his Dense Evergrow Wood Staff, leaving the pierced half inside of his target, dealing 60 / 85 / 110 / 155 / 190 (+60% AD) in physical damage over 4.0 seconds. Doing so will cause Theogen to lose 50 attack range immediately, but gain the attack range back as the Dense Evergrow Wood Staff grows back to normal size over the next 2.0 seconds.

  • The growth of the Evergrow Wood Staff and recovery of Theogen’s Attack Range will persist though stasis effects.

  • The damage for the splinter effect will proc every .5 seconds.

  • Theogen’s targeted is rooted for .5 second with the initial enhanced auto attack, and continues to be rooted for the .25 second splintering animation, combining for the total .75 second root.

Ground Targeted Terrain Generation via Rotary Casting Radius: 700 Cooldowns: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 Cost: 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 Casting Time: .5 seconds Interrupts Movement: Yes

Theogen will cast an element of nature into a target area, creating different terrain or areas based on the active element, lasting 3.5 / 3.75 / 4 / 4.25 / 4.5 seconds. Each cast of Nature’s Design will select the next element from the cycle, starting with Thicket, followed by Forest, then Mountain.

Thicket Element Length 600 Width: 500

Theogen creates an overgrown thicket line at the target location perpendicular to the direction he is facing, slowing all enemy units for 20% while they are within the area.

Forest Element Length 600 Width: 400

Theogen creates a small plot of a copse at the target location perpendicular to the direction he is facing, applying Nearsight to enemy units while they are within the area.

Mountain Element Length 600 Width: 300

Theogen creates a impassable mound of rock at the target location perpendicular to the direction he is facing, knocking enemy units away from it as it is formed.

  • The element iteration will be Thicket→Forest→Mountain→repeat. Thicket will be the first element active when a point is put into the ability.

  • Dying does not change the order or selection of the current element. Theogen’s element at death will be the selected element upon respawn.

  • Enemy units effected by the rock wall formation will be knocked back to the nearest point by the edge of the wall.

  • The cooldown will start after the wall or area dissolves.

##E: Sapping Stalks

Ally Targeted Heal | Auto Targeted Area of Effect with Conditional Self / Ally Targeted Heal Range: 500 Radius: 250 / 300 / 350 / 400 / 450 Projectile Speed: 1400 (Travel speed to ally) Cooldowns: 11 / 10.5 / 10 / 9.5 / 9 Cost: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 Casting Time: .5 Second Interrupts Movement: Yes

Theogen slams his staff, forcing stalks from the ground travel to a targeted ally or himself, healing them for 35 / 60 / 80 / 110 / 150 (+35% AP) health over 2.0 seconds. At the end of the duration, stalks sprout from Theogen or the targeted ally, lashing at all enemy units in a small area around them, dealing 55 / 75 / 110 / 160 / 200 (+35% AP) in magic damage. The initial heal will refresh on the ally or Theogen if the sprouting stalks damages an enemy champion.

  • The lashing stalks attack and healing refresh effect will trigger through stasis effects.

###Passive http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/a/a8/Ability_hunter_onewithnature.png/revision/latest?cb=20100919130824

###Active http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/b/bb/Ability_druid_naturalperfection.png/revision/latest?cb=20070111222805 ##R: Elemental Embrace

Passive Resource Cost Reduction via Persistent Area of Effect

If Theogen is casting an ability while being within Grounds of Renewal, the ability will have its mana cost reduced by 15% / 20% / 25%.

Active Unit Targeted Shield Range: 1000 Cooldowns: 100 / 90 / 80 Cost: 100 Casting Time: 1.0 Second Interrupts Movement: Yes

Theogen summons elements of nature to protect himself or an allied champion, granting them a shield for 140 / 260 / 380 (+25% AD) (+25% AP) damage, lasting 8 / 9 / 10 seconds.

The shield starts at 50% total hit points, but will regenerate its hit points by 200% / 250% / 300% of the current Base Health Regeneration rate per second of Theogen or the ally it’s protecting for the remaining duration.

  • The shield regeneration effect persist though stasis effects.

  • The shield from Elemental Embrace will always take top priority of being reduced when Theogen or the shielded ally takes damage, even when multiple shields are placed on them.

  • The order that the shields were applied is not taken into consideration. The shield from Elemental Embrace will still be the first to be reduced when taking damage.

  • The shield is comprised of the three elements from Nature’s Design. The selected element will make up 70% of the make up for the shields barrier. The other two will make 15% of the shields barrier each. This is only a visual effect and has no bearing on the skill.

  • If there is no skill point in Nature’s Design, then a random element will be selected.

  • Ability Example

  • Theogen has 20 Health Regeneration, 100 AD and AP, and rank one in Elemental Embrace and cast it on himself:

  • Total Shield Strength: 140 + (25% of 100 AD) + (25% of 100 AP) → 140 + 25 + 25 → 140 + 50 → 190.

  • Casting Elemental Embrace will instantly shield Theogen for: 190 / 2 → 95 damage.

  • The shield will then regenerate it shield strength at: (2 X 20 Health per second) → 40 HP per second, granting him a full shield approximately after 2.5 seconds.

  • Now let’s say he is getting ganked by Nasus after the shield has recharged to full strength:

    • Nasus hits him with the cane doing 160 damage: 190 – 160 → 30 shield HP left.
    • Theogen flashes away under tower with his nearly dead ally Marksman, and does not get dealt any further damage from Nasus for 4 seconds: 30 + (40 X 4) → 30 + 160 → 190 shield HP for Theogen.
    • Nasus surprise flashes under Theogen’s tower, ults, then kills Theogen. Nasus barely escapes with his life – but then Theogens body is reclaimed to the land, granting enough health and mana regeneration for his Marksman to confidently attack and kill Nasus.

#Design Notes

##Champion Design Inspirations

Taric Janna Maokai Anivia

##Intentions

  • I drew a lot of inspiration from Taric to make Theogen, where Taric’s roles is classified as Support / Fighter, just as Theogen. There seems to be no Champions in that unique role classification outside of Kayle – which is the reversed order of role preference and half of the vision. This is a great opportunity to design something that will fit well into that area.

  • I wanted Theogen to have the ability to turn a gank into a 1 for 1 outcome, giving the sustain or durability to either himself or his marksman to make that happen.

  • I also wanted Theogen to depend on nature, specifically being his Grounds of Renewal. His lower than average base mana and mana regeneration with the high cost of his abilities are used as a way to compel players to use fallen allies that are reclaimed to land as a source to utilize nature. Additionally, the use of rotating elements to create different nature themed landscapes on the battlefield was used as additional means to support this notion that Theogen utilizes nature for his power.

  • Lastly, I wanted to implement a new type of casting, which I’m calling: Rotary Casting. Abilities of this type will cycle through a limited set of slightly different effects based off a main theme – as with the Nature’s Design ability. It’s structured to keep a similar element of the ability throughout all cast and make changes on another part of the ability that changes per cast. The only spell attributes that will be effected per rank increase is the cooldown and cost of the ability.

  • Note that it is different than Twisted Fate’s Pick a Card ability as the champion must cast the next element in the cycle. He does not and cannot choose which specific element to cast at any time. It may have any reasonable amount of elements in a Rotary cycle.

Upon Champion Selection “Nature’s will. My hands.”

#Trivia

  • Theogen armor and skin will wither if not exposed to sunlight for extended periods. But he does not worry, and his Evergrow Wood bodily make up will grow healthy and strong wood in the withered place.

  • In order for Theogen to have the fire hardened wood armor, Theogen must remain dangerously close to a large open flame for an extended period for the fire hardening process to take place. This process, although he is made of wood, does not bother him. In fact, it is very pleasant for him.

#Personal Notes

  • I'm always happy to hear any form of constructive feedback and criticism. I make changes on agreeable suggestions and give credit where credit is due too. Comment freely.

Sounds Awesome, Maokai didn't really have that guardian of the forest feel to him anyways. I would like to see this in game.

showcase251 votes

Yes, I see Maokai as a part of the forest and Theogen being made from the first, while being iits protector and enforcer. And a unhappy, angry one at that.

Thanks for the support.

This concept has the best layout that I have ever seen, as well as being one of the most well thought out champion kit, themes, and lore, that I have ever seen.

Peeps should use this as an example. I want this concept to win

Everything works so well together and the abilities seem really cool. Question: I think I misunderstood something - does W effect R?

showcase251 votes

Thanks for the support. I appreciate it.

And to clarify, the current element thats in rotation from W only makes up a majority of the visual aspect of the shield for his R. It has no gameplay effect or value at all.

really great design. i won't even make notes about each individual ability cuz they're all pretty darn good. the one ability i'd like to mention is the W. it looks a bit underpowered, given that it's an AOE slow / nearsight / wall with such a long cooldown that starts after the area dissapears, especially the sand effect. overall, all of his abilities are really cool. great job. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

showcase252 votes

The area lasting not as long as others could also help with a reason to reduce the cool down. And being that it is not a wall every cast, it seems respectable to bring it down. I was probably being over compensatory. I'll make the changes soon. Thanks for pointing that out.

First of all, I love the formatting of this concept, very well done! Secondly, I really dig the champion concept itself; as a Support main, I think I'd really enjoy playing as this champion. I have some questions, then some comments. Questions first:

  1. For his passive, at what levels do the regeneration amounts increase? It's sectioned off at 10/15/20, but at which levels those increases take place isn't shown.
  2. Is there a cooldown for how often his passive can be proced, or does it really proc every time an allied unit dies?
  3. For the Rock Formation on his W, how far back does the terrain knock enemy units when it's formed?
  4. On his E, am I understanding correctly that if the lashing vines damage an enemy, then the cooldown on the ability is refreshed, therefore allowing it to be cast again immediately?
  5. What kind of items do you see Theogen building?

Now for comments:

  • His Q seems awfully out of place on the kit. The ability itself is fantastic, but on a kit that features zone control, heals, and a shield, an ArPen root DoT AD-scaling ability sticks out like a sore thumb.
  • The W ability is absolutely awesome, great idea! Just from a thematic/aesthetic perspective, sand seems a bit out of place, but the gameplay functionality is spot on.
  • His ult seems a bit underwhelming, especially considering it starts at half-strength upon casting it. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind that, although the self-regeneration bit is a nice touch.
showcase252 votes

Thanks for the appreciation of the formatting. I think good presentation helps my concepts stand out, as well as aid in readability. Now, let's answer some questions.

  1. Yes, it is not immediately clear for the champion level thresholds for each notch of regeneration effects. As far as I know, there are two versions. One with a three tier system, a one with a four tier one. As with Theogen's three tier system, I can't believe that carried over from my draft version. I like the 4 tier system better, and will make the changes to that. It will go as follows: level 1-5: 8% | levels 6 - 10: 12% | levels 11-15: 16% | levels 16+: 20%.

  2. It procs every time an allied unit dies if and only if Theogen is within range of the allied unit at the time of death (1000 units).

  3. With the width of the formation being 300, it will knock them to 1 unit away from the edge of the formation. so it's not a a set distance for every unit effected per se as one could be very near to the edge vs one that was deadcenter.

  4. When the vines damage an enemy, the healing effect on whomever Theogen originally targeted for the heal is refreshed ( for another 35 / 60 / 80 / 110 / 150 +35% AP health )

  5. I do normally add that section in (Recommended Items) but didn't this time. From my idea, a decent build would be: item 3401 item 3105 item 3060 item 3100 item 3748 item 3111/item 3047 as needed

There will definitely be changes when I look at this later, lol.

And now for the comments:

First point - Yes, it does seem out of place. Call it a creative impasse, as i do, as i wanted to give him a reason to feel like he could put up a big of a fight (Fighter as second role designation), and a thematic use of his Evergrow wood, and simply something to do while he was in melee range of an enemy other than just auto attacks.

Seconds point - Sand does feel out of place, now that you mention it. I was going to originally going to do: Thicket, Forest, Mountain but...

...

... hmmm - looks like i have to go back to my original idea. That sounds better. Thank you

Third point - And the reason it starts at half strength is because of the regenerating effect. It will regenerate through the entire duration. Having it start at full strengh and a shield that regenerates feels a little unfair. The counter play opportunity is as soon as you see it, kill it. If you want to try to wait it out, it has a longer duration at higher levels, and regeneration will generally be stronger at later levels, so kill it on sight.

Thanks for all the comments and questions. I will be updating Theogen when i can, and give credit where it is due.

Well the small letters come from having 6 "#" leading the start of text. Below is a test

######this is small text

The box is just making sure that a ">" is the first thing you put in a line of text. Make sure to add a additional paragraph space at the end of it, otherwise the whole post will be in the box. ALSO, make sure there is a space between the > and #

this is text in a box

Im back as promised XD

Lore: This is pretty good imo. My only problem is that Theogen makes it seem like he will personally come after you while his kit is supportive as hell. Although Riot did do the same thing with Bard so not too big of a problem scratch that. His Q is enough to sell that he will kill you. I mean he fucking stabs you and not even so much stab just force it through your chest, holy crap. Ok back to reviewing, i really like how you told it from the perspective of a man driven insane. As seen by when he mentions the Graves escape, hes seen some shit, but this messed him up badly.

Also does Theogen have any links to Maokai or Zyra?

PASSIVE: Reclamation TBH i cant really be sure of this abilities power based on 1 activiation, its something i would need to see it actually go in game. % healing and movement speed and such tend to give me this issue. However, this ability is almost certainly going off atleast every 10 seconds, healing and giving mana. Champions who are intended to have mana problems early such as Urgot or Ezreal would be able to just bully and/or poke you to no end because they have Theogen with them.

Q: Splinter Strike ok again. absolutely terrifying. remind me to never litter. Back to the task at hand though

Simple yet effective, not a bad ability. Drawback even makes sense too, although it maybe be a bit too punishing.

W: Nature’s Design This ability fits great thematically I adore this Rotary Casting idea. I might steal it and use it in 1 of my upcoming concepts XD.

I was prepared for 1 of the elements to be completely overpowered and 1 to be useless with a the 3rds power being somewhere in between the 2, but really Mountain and Thicket are pretty balanced. Im thinking Forest is a bit strong though, but that could just be hating on nearsight (fk nearsight lol).

E: Sapping Stalks Great thematic fit. Once again a balanced ability.

R: Elemental Embrace Ok why the hell is this kit so balanced? The shield just heals itself right, or can it grow any bigger?

Conclusion On release, I predict Theogen would be balanced, but probably too safe. Like Janna levels of safe where she basically forces a farm lane. Theogen's passive is extremely safe, and although it wouldnt be gamebreaking, it would feel anti-fun to the enemy bot lane. The rest of his kit looks decently balanced to me. Maybe the smaller auras could heal less and grant less mana?

Here's some designer feedback on your thoughts -

Lore: This is pretty good imo. My only problem is that Theogen makes it seem like he will personally come after you while his kit is supportive as hell. Although Riot did do the same thing with Bard so not too big of a problem scratch that. His Q is enough to sell that he will kill you. As seen by when he mentions the Graves escape, hes seen some shit, but this messed him up badly.

Also does Theogen have any links to Maokai or Zyra?

Yes, i have him slated as a Support / Fighter, with the kit paying particular focus to the support side. The whole stab through the chest ability is an way to have him still support via the CC, but really fight back (and have minor sustain via his passive) to thematically aid in the fighter role.

PASSIVE: Reclamation TBH i cant really be sure of this abilities power based on 1 activation, its something i would need to see it actually go in game.

The power is mainly countered by forcing Theogen to be near those allies (minions or champions) for the ability to proc and its triggering where the ally unit dies, meaning the opponents can attack them since they just killed that other unit in that spot. This really adds to his lane dominance direction while really giving some importance to both zone and lane control.

Q: Splinter Strike ok again. absolutely terrifying. remind me to never litter. Back to the task at hand though

Simple yet effective, not a bad ability. Drawback even makes sense too, although it maybe be a bit too punishing.

i thought two seconds for the grow back is alright. maybe a one second grow back duration.... or would that then be too quick.

W: Nature’s Design This ability fits great thematically I adore this Rotary Casting idea. I might steal it and use it in 1 of my upcoming concepts XD.

Please, use it to the fullest. All i ask is a little credit or link.

Balancing this ability was a outrageously hard thing. I had to keep them all diverse, but thematically fitting, watch not to have that obvious power creep in the casting cycle as you described. This was balance by reducing the width of the wall as the comparably utility increases. And yea, nearsight sucks, lol.

E: Sapping Stalks Great thematic fit. Once again a balanced ability.

Thanks. My worry is that the ability is difficult to understand mechanically. If i described it well, let me know.

R: Elemental Embrace Ok why the hell is this kit so balanced? The shield just heals itself right, or can it grow any bigger?

I work hard on balance... I think that presenting something feasible with the number/damage/stat balance really makes a better overall concept. Also, i do a lot of calculations vs stated damage on current champions to try to make it balanced that way too. For example, i looked at Janna's shied and Mundo's Passive to see some somewhat similar numbers.

Theogen was focused on creating a easier and not easy lane for his ally with his ability to regen his ally. i do want to say that he could force an engage by casting a Forest/Mountain and slowing them down/blocking their path, then maybe a flash-Q to go all in. This type of aggression always different players to play differently, while still granting lane dominance either way.

I do like the smaller aura granting less regen. i might just half it effectiveness. Especially since there are six allied minions.

Overall. Thanks for the review. It really helps me know where im doing alright in, and were something can use some polishing.

Great concept, you got my upvote. The passive really stands out to me. I think they should also gain flat health back each second based of Theogen's Health regen to promote building into it but That's just my thoughts.

Thanks for the support.

I think they should also gain flat health back each second based of Theogen's Health regen.

I think that is a good idea, and promotes even more kit synergy and flow. Thematically with the "i'm always regenerating and growing" with the Evergrow Wood, that subtle lean towards health regen makes sense.

Thanks again.

Isn't Thresh a support/fighter?

Yes. Yes he is.

Apparently I was mistaken to how many support / fighters were listed. Thanks for the catch.
