Lore

As a young women Freya was a friend of Ryze. Both were wild, young mages, eager to learn more about magic and the world itself. They both had studied under Tyrus, a renowned Shurima magician back in those days. While Ryze was patient, wise and responsible, Freya was more of a headstrong, intrepid and fearless girl. Unlike most mages during those days, she studied magic not to earn prestige or wield immense power, but to gain knowledge of the world itself. Magic helped her understand the world around her and connect with it. She loved experimenting new spells and discovering new ways to use magic.

When Ryze told her about the “World Runes” he had heard from Tyrus, Freya was extremely excited and immediately began to research them. At first, Ryze had aided her with her research. However, as timed passed Ryze began to distance himself more and more. After a certain expedition with Tyrus at two warring kingdoms, Ryze warned Freya about the dangers of the runes and forbade her to continue her research. Disagreeing with him, Freya set of on her own to learn all that she could about the runes.

Through her research, she managed to discover a different purpose of the runes. While it was true that pure “World Runes” were too dangerous and unstable, certain smaller, more weaker runes had merged with nature itself, creating a much more stable and docile form of runes. Freya decided to call the “Elemental Runes”. By manipulating these runes, Freya can control the very forces of nature itself, calling forth blazing fireballs and gushing water. Freya continues to travel Runeterra to learn more about the “Elemental Runes”, not on some noble mission to save the world *cough*, but simply because she wishes to.

Friends : Ryze

Theme

Freya is a mage whose main theme is ‘runes’, ‘elements’ and ‘research’. Every point invested in her skills reflects the research she has done on that skill. The more research, the more powerful her spells are. Her ultimate reflects this concept of research. Instead of gaining a sudden powerful new spell, her ultimate depends on her other skills and the amount of research she has put into them. Hence she is extremely level dependent. The longer the game continues the more powerful she will grow. Early in game her spells are very straightforward and plain, reflecting how little she knows about them. As the game progress he gains much more interesting spells with more power and utility. Freya must also plan ahead on which skill of hers would she need the most early-mid game, making the players themselves do a little research.

Skills

First of all, I’ll point out that Freya doesn’t have a passive (#breakingthemeta). Instead Freya has 5 active spells, QWERT. This might seem like a lot of buttons to press but you won’t be pressing the ulti button that often. Who cares anyways, champions like Nidalee or Jayce have like 8 spells overall, right? Well, actually Freya kinda has like 13 spells overall (insert WTF here). Don’t worry, it’ll become clearer when you read her skills. Freyas basic spells can be leveled up 4 times while her ulti only twice (Ryze inspiration here).

Q- Rune: Fire (10/9/8/7 sec) (55/70/85/100 mana) (600 range) Launches a fireball at a single targeted enemy, dealing 50/100/150/200 (+50% AP) magic

W- Rune: Wind (10/9/8/7 sec) (55/70/85/100 mana) (900 range) Sends a gust of wind forward in a straight line, dealing 50/100/150/200 (+50% AP) magic damage to the first enemy hit.

E – Rune: Water (10/9/8/7 sec) (55/70/85/100 mana) (800 range) (200 rad) After a short delay causes water to erupt in a targeted area, 50/100/150/200 (+50% AP) magic damage

R – Rune: Earth (10/9/8/7 sec) (55/70/85/100 mana) (700 range) (250 rad) Crumbles the ground at targeted area, dealing 50/100/150/200 (+50% AP) magic damage over 2 seconds

First of all, Freyavatar confirmed. Second, so there you have it. Freyas basic spells. Completely bland and boring. NO CC and extremely weak pre-6. Heck even her basic attack is higher. Her laning phase is abysmally terrible. And that’s the way she is designed to be. Because early game she knows nothing (John Snow) hence her skills and power reflect that. Notice that each point greatly increases the power of her spells. She needs to ‘learn’ to make her spells stronger. She has to play safe pre-6 unless a good jungler can help her.

T – Elemental Mastery (80sec) (100 mana)

Passive: Increases the base damage of her skills by 10/25

Toggle On: Freyas understanding of runes enables her to select 2 runes to be fused.

Toggle Off: Freya fuses the the 2 runes chosen. She then gains a new spell that can be cast in the next 10 seconds. If she does not cast the spell or Elemental Mastery fails it goes on a 10 second cooldown.

Rank 1: Can only fuse runes of the same type (ie fire rune with fire rune) Rank 2: Can fuse 2 different runes, creating a new element (opposing elements cannot be combined, so no fire + water or earth + wind)

(While her ulti isn’t a channel and she can move around and basic attack, she cannot cast any other spells while her ulti is on. Also, enemies can she her toggle her ulti due to visuals)

The mechanism: So lets say Freya wants to uses Elemental Research. She wants to cast Magma (Fire + Earth) so she presses T > R > Q > T. The second T is to confirm her choice, changing her T to Magma. Freya then has to aim and press T again to cast Magma. If while her she was choosing magma she pressed T > R > Q and suddenly changes her mind and wants to cast Lightning (Fire + Wind) she has to press W > T. The W will replace her last choice (R) and she will cast a fusion of Q and W which creates Lightning. Then she aims her Lightning and presses T and gets a pentakill cause enemy is nubz.

( Some of you might think “Hey isn’t her ulti a bit like Invoker from DoTA?” Well yes, in some way I took Invoker as some inspiration, along with Steven Universe, Avatar and other inspirations. So yes, although her ulti might share some similarities in the end it was my original idea.)

These are her rank 1 spells. (Note, you can see her fusion spell list in the shop, since putting it in HUD will be way too long)

Rank 1

Fire + Fire = Rune: Inferno (700 range) (100 radius) Hurls a gigantic fireball at a single target enemy, dealing (150% Fire) magic damage to the enemy and enemies surrounding it in a small radius. The targeted enemy will also take an extra 20% of the damage over 5 seconds. (the surrounding enemies don’t)

Wind + Wind = Rune: Hurricane (1000 range) Sends forth a strong piercing wind, dealing (150% Wind) magic damage to all enemies in line and reducing their magic resist by 30%.

Water + Water = Rune: Flood (900 range) (300 rad) After a short delay causes an enormous geyser to burst from the ground at a targeted area, dealing (150% Water) magic damage to the enemy and knocking them up for 1 second.

Earth + Earth = Rune: Quake (800 range) (350 rad) Shatters the earth at a targeted location, dealing (150% earth) magic damage over 2 seconds and slowing enemies on the area by 50% which decays after 1 second upon leaving the area.

(These runes are kinda like gems in Steven Universe. Same type gem fusion doesn’t create a new gem; just a stronger version of the old one. Same rune fusion simply creates a more powerful version of the rune)

The moment Freya levels up her ulti she immediately gains a significant spike due to all her skills gaining 25 extra damage. She also gains small amounts of cc from her Flood and Quake runes. This makes enables her to engage the enemy and perhaps even secure a kill. She is still rather weak with minimal cc but at least she can stand her own ground. However note to use her ulti she needs time to create a spell, which can prove troublesome. Getting caught by enemy jug? Making a cc spell takes time, you’ll probably be dead by then. Getting ready for a jungle gank? Enemies will notice you’re using your ulti and if they’re smart they’ll guess somethings up. In the end it’s all about how fast can you press something like TEET.

Freya must also plan ahead what skills she levels first. Note her ulti damage depends on her basic skill damage. That means if Freya does not invest in that skill, then the ultimate form will deal minimal damage. Should invest in all 4 skills to increase her poke? Or perhaps only 3 skills to have a single 3-point skill to make her ulti stronger? And what skill should she prioritize first? Against a Katarina perhaps E for the cc to cancel her ulti. Against Lux perhaps her Q to counter poke. Against a Volibear perhaps R for her safety (don’t ask why Volibear is at mid). All this must be taken in consideration. Unlike most champions which have skills that you obviously level up first, Freya is much like Udyr ; free to choose the path she takes.

And that’s only mid game. Next are her skills when she unlocks her rank 2 ulti.

Rank 2

Fire + Earth = Rune: Magma (800 range) (400 rad) Creates a pool of lava at the targeted area for 4 seconds. Enemies inside the pool take (100% Fire + 100% Earth) magic damage over the duration and are Grounded.

Fire + Wind = Rune: Lightning (3000 range) Fires a long-range bolt of lightning, dealing (100% Fire + 100% Wind) magic damage to all enemies in line.

Water + Earth =Rune: Forest (600 range) Summons a wooden golem to fight by your side. The golem has (300% Water + 300% Earth) health and (25% Water + 25% Earth) attack damage and matches Freya’s attack speed. Golem lasts 45 seconds.

Water + Wind = Rune: Glacier (1000 range) (500 length) Causes glacial spikes to stab out from the ground in a line, dealing (100% Water + 100% Wind) magic damage and snaring enemies hit for 2 seconds. (Vector casting, like Rumbles ulti.)

Now before some of you complain she has waay to much utility let me remind you that ALL of her utility comes from her ulti. Freya has to choose which ulti she wishes cast wisely. She could use Lightning to snipe an enemy from far away and get a kill only to have a small teamfight to occur 10 seconds later without any of her utilities to use. Not only that, but remember her ulti damage depends on her basic skill levels. If you were playing damage focused early game investing points in Fire and Wind, perhaps midgame you find teamfights happen a lot and you need Magma more than Lightning cause em Zed Fizz Kalista Alistar Akali comp. You could still use Magma but the damage will be greatly reduced. If you had maxed Fire before Wind you could immediately start maxing Earth second instead of Wind to still deal some decent damage.

But what if it turns out you need to push more? To use Forest you need to swap from Fire Wind to Water Earth. Might be a bit late to do so. That’s why when using Freya planning ahead is extremely important. You’ll most likely need to choose one role and stick to it until late game. Know what your team needs and focus on that. Of course upon reaching level 16+ you can easily swap your focus because most of your skills will be near max. But early-mid game you have to quickly decide which spell of the 4 will suit this matchup the most and adjust.

Recommended Builds

The Mage 101 item 3165 item 3089 item 3135 You’re a mage. Get these or you’re a heretic.

The Team Player item 3116 item 3151 item 3001 item 3157 You wanna help out in teamfight. Rylai gives your basic skills the cc they lack. You’re gonna aim to max Magma or Glacial depending on the enemy comp. This is the jack-of-all-trades build which helps cover up your weaknesses and make your presence more impactful.

The Glass Cannon item 3285 item 3100 item 3146 You wanna fck em and fck em hard. You have 5 skills and wanna make the most out of it. By mid-game you wanna vaporize them before they can say “Teemo is Satan”. You max out Fire followed by Wind for that crazy Lightning burst. You weave your 5 skills with aa to proc those lich banes. Add gunblade for tht 6th spell and boom them dead.

The Tower Eater item 3115 item 3006 item 3091 item 3512 Your golems attack speed depends on your own. So you’re gonna max em Forest and pretend your Azir and get that crazy attack speed build. Combined with portal by mid game you can easily chow down on some turrets for lunch.

The Tear build item 3070 item 3040 item 3027 item 3100 item 3165 For some reason you like mana. A lot of it. And since you have 4 spells it’s easier to stack up that tear (we know it has cd but still…). Also since your early game is terrible anyways might as well build for late game. So you buy these items. As a bonus if you feed you can get 6 tears and blame jungle for no ganks.

Matchups

Bad Lane: Leblanc Talon Ahri Fizz These champions (especially cancerous Leblanc can easily all in you pre-6. Since you don’t do much pre-6 if they go all in you dead. Play super safe against them.

Good Lane: Yasuo Akali Anivia These champions play pretty passively pre-6 and cant all-in you. With your long range farming should be easy enough and you can stay safe while slowly whittle them down with well-placed spells.

Teamfights: Similar to champions like Lissandra and malphite, Freya greatly relies on her ulti to be effective. While her basic spells can pack a punch with low cooldowns, without her ulti securing a kill will be hard. Hence Freya should wait for an ally to engage, giving her enough time to activate Elemental Mastery and quickly casting her chosen ulti. Although she can poke constantly with her skills, their mana costs are pretty high, and randomly spamming skills will leave her manaless before she knows it.

Amazing concept. However, in this way you planned, she'll have a difficulty rank of at least 138924, on the scale of 10. How about the T becomes her passive, but more like azir or new zilean passive where when she casts a spell, a rune flows near her, and when two runes are collected, right click the runes will turn her combined spells into the new spell (like, water + wind runes right clicked, and her W and E will turn into new spell, while fire and earth remains unchanged. Also, making the cooldown a lot lower could be a viable option, with reduced damage of course; so she can have her difficulty level reduced to within the range 1-10, at least, but then playing her would break your keyboard. Another thing is I see that you missed Fire+Water and Wind+Earth. I don't know if this is on purpose but imo Fire + Water can be something like vapor, to reduce enemy vision or boil, basically saying liquid inside the target boils, adds exhaust-like effect to them and deal DoT. Wind+Earth could be sandstorm, which can be an Aoe in short range, somewhat like Janna's Ult but deals damage to enemies instead of heal allies. Anyway I entertained reading this concept and I think it'd be cool if Riot gives it a shot.

I quite like the concept, but I can't help but feel she's just a bit too strong in the late-early game for a late-game champ... if that makes sense. The nature of her ult combined with her linear scaling means that if she builds evenly she gets some pretty strong burst at lvl 6. e.g. at lvl 6, with 1/2/1/1/1 which, if she lands her full combo gives a total of 660 + (3.15 AP). Which, according to this (slightly outdated but still useful) chart I found, is insanely powerful (just a little bit above LeBlanc's bullsh*t burst damage). Removing the passive from her ult would help reduce the titanic lvl 6 powerspike to a merely huge one.

P.S. Railgun or Index? Choose wisely.

Also, why does Glacier scale with Fire's level?

So complex.
