Passive - Bramble Sap: Periodically Maokai's next basic attack gains bonus range and, after a brief delay, Maokai releases an arcane shockwave that travels towards his attack target, dealing magic damage to all enemies it passes through and slowing them briefly, while healing him for a portion his max health for every enemy hit. Enemies near Maokai are also knocked back.

Each time Maokai casts an ability or is struck by an enemy's ability, Bramble Sap's cooldown is reduced by a second.

Q - Uprooted - Enemy - First Cast: Maokai silences, disarms, and slows himself as be picks up a target enemy, stunning them for a few seconds as he carries them. If Maokai takes too much damage while carrying an enemy, he will drop them, becoming slowed briefly.

  • Planted - Enemy - Second Cast: Maokai slams them down at a target location, dealing mixed damage and rooting them for a second. Other enemies that are hit by Maokai planting another enemy are dealt mixed damage and knocked away from the planted enemy. The size of the planted enemy increases the area and damage dealt to other enemies.

  • Friend to the Trees - Allies: Maokai silences, disarms, and slows himself as he lifts an allied champion, cleansing them, but rooting them to Maokai. While Maokai is carrying them, his ally is untargetable, except from turrets, and they can still attack and cast non-movement abilities. Recasting this ability will put them down. If Maokai takes too much damage while carrying an ally he will drop them, slowing both them and himself briefly.

W - Twisted Advance: Maokai become an untargetable colossal wall of thorny brambles that advances forwards in a target direction, stopping at the first enemy champion, or large jungle monster he collides with. Maokai deals magic damage and roots the enemy, the damage and duration are both increased by the distance he traveled. Recasting this ability ends the advance early.

E - Plants of War - Targeting a Plant: Maokai picks up a jungle plant, granting it life and turning it into a Sapling. Targeting additional Jungle Plants will add them to Maokai's garden on his back. Maokai can have 2/3/4/5/6 Plants at once. Plants of War has no cooldown.

  • Sapling Toss - Normal Cast: Maokai tosses a sapling at a target location, and will remain for 30 seconds, which gains bonus effects and double the duration when tossed in a bush. If Maokai has multiple saplings to chose from, Sapling Toss will begin a channel, changing each of his abilities to a different type of sapling.

Q - None - Base Sapling: Base Saplings chase nearby enemies in range, chasing them for up to 2.5 seconds, popping upon impact or at the end of its duration, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies upon detonation. Base Saplings placed in a bush deal bonus magic damage over 2 seconds to all enemies hit when it explodes.

W - Blast Cones - Arcane Sapling: Arcane Saplings chase nearby enemies in range, chasing them for up to 2.5 seconds, exploding in violent arcane energy upon impact or at the end of its duration, dealing magic damage to, and knocking up and away all nearby enemies upon detonation. Arcane Saplings placed in a bush deal double damage over 2 seconds to all enemies hit when it explodes. Allies are also knocked up and away by the Arcane Sapling, but not damaged.

E - Honeyfruits - Blessed Sapling: Blessed Saplings chase nearby allies in range, chasing them for up to 2.5 seconds, exploding into a shower of blessed water upon impact or at the end of its duration, healing all nearby allies upon detonation, and granting them bonus movement speed for 2 seconds. Blessed Saplings placed in a bush heals double the health over 2 seconds to all allies in hit.

R - Scryer's Blooms - Wailing Sapling: Wailing Saplings chase nearby enemies in range, chasing them for up to 2.5 seconds, latching into them upon impact or exploding and pinging the map at the end of its duration. While latched onto an enemy, Wailing Sapling cause enemies they are latched onto to be pinged on the map, revealed, and slowed them for 3 seconds. Wailing Saplings placed in a bush also Exposes the enemy they latch onto, making them take bonus damage from all sources over the 3 seconds.

R - Nature's Grasp: Maokai summons a colossal wall of 5 thorny brambles that slowly advances forward in a target direction, each stopping at the first enemy champion they collide with. Each thorny bramble deals magic damage and roots the enemy they collide with, the damage and duration are both increased by the distance they traveled.

  • Fury of the Grove: Maokai can dash, from an infinite range, to enemies that have been rooted by Nature's Grasp in the past 10 seconds, refreshing and triggering Bramble Sap against each one. Maokai can't dash to the same enemy champion or monster more than once, for every cast of Nature's Grasp.

I think that, maokai has good abilities to peel, cc etc, they are very good for a tank. The problem of him is, a lack of dmg. Seriously, almost all tanks have hp% dmg, maokai has it too, but on his sapplings. U can outplay your opponents going to bush, and they get rekt by 3 samplings, but that's all, if they don't go into that bushes, then well, u are screwed. Maokai is tanky as hell due to his passive, but his dmg is not threating to an enemy, even if u just go in on adc, u must fully rely on your team. For example u go on fed draven, u cc him and all, and he just goes free of u, and start to kill your team instead of u. Everyone except u is dying, and u are the last one who gonna die, enemy team won the teamfight, draven is almost full hp from an encounter with u.

If he would have his hp% dmg on his W like he had pre rework, he would be strong, like sion and Ornn, If on Q he would be god tier actually.

Half of Maokai's kit works, being his Q and W, but his E is just there to cast so that you can get your passive cool down. R has gone through several changes since the beginning and I think that a strong focus on reworking his ultimate will make the difference for him. None the less here's changes I would make to his E and R.

E: Maokai tosses sapling, after 1 second upon landing you can recast E to have the sapling jump towards direction, exploding on impact and slowing enemies hit. Landing in a bush would empower sapling directional damage as well. Otherwise you can leave the sapling in a bush for vision. When enemy gets close to a sapling, it leaps towards target but deals less damage for how far it has to travel.

R: (Furious Vengeance) Maokai taps into the sacred waters from his Heartwood empowering his next ability for the next 10 seconds. Upon cast all other abilities have their cool downs reset to being active. Q has a wider hit and those hit in the center take true damage. W roots all enemies around self within a certain range. E smashes a sapling into the ground where they explode in multiplying dealing damage. Once an empowered ability is used, the other abilities not used are reset to 50% it's normal cool down timer.
