Udyr Mini Rework: Skill Amplifications
Looking at Udyr, the one thing he lacks is diversity; everyone who plays him plays him exactly the same with varying degrees of skill. You're never going to recognize a good Udyr player like you might recognize Faker's Zed or Pink Ward's Shaco. The difference between two Udyr players is their skill as League players, not as Udyr players. So to give players more choices and options, we could give him simple yet powerful tools for his kit utilizing his passive. The idea behind this is that on putting points into a stance he gains a certain buff, and by maxing it out he gains a better version.
Passive: Spirit Walker As he becomes one with the spirits, they grant him certain benefits: --Tiger's Hunt: Udyr gains additional attack speed against bleeding targets. At max level he also gains MS toward bleeding enemies. --Turtle's Ward: Udyr gains additional tenacity while shielded by Turtle Stance. At max level he is immune to crowd control effects while shielded by Turtle Stance. --Bear's Might: Udyr gains resistance to slows while under the active effects of Bear Stance. At max level he cannot be slowed while under the active effects of Bear Stance. --Phoenix's Inferno: Taking damage from the Phoenix's flames reduces Armor and MR for 2 seconds, stacking up to a certain number of times. At max level, Phoenix flames ignore resistances altogether.
A few notes:
- This is instead of his current passive, not in addition. And yes, this is a rip off of Kha'zix and Kai'sa. -The bleed from Tiger Stance only lasts 2 seconds. He has to be pretty powerful for this to become too much of an issue, and the duration of the bleed can be tweaked to add or take away power if need be. It does give him powerful coincidental synergy with Darius, but if Cass and Yasuo are any indication Riot is fine with that.
- Udyr's main weakness is gap closing. He the only champion in the game with no gap closers or long range crowd control. This gives him a powerful tool to engage, and simple counterplay of "break the shield before he gets too close."
- I know you're thinking that between Turtle and Bear he has a lot of CC resistance. However even Ashe, who has a slow on every single one of her damaging abilities, already cannot stop Udyr from barreling towards her. Udyr doesn't even usually build Boots of Swiftness, taking Merc Treads or Tabis in over 70% of games. Obviously, slows aren't his main issue, and this resistance only lasts 2-3 seconds anyway. Also, this does not remove slows.
- AP Udyr and Phoenix Stance have been an issue in the past. I know this, I was there when Riot nerfed Swiftees and reworked an entire jungle item just to reign him in. However, they barely touched his damage. They didn't need to, because his damage wasn't an issue, it was his speed and a cheap Lich Bane. The reason no one plays Phoenix now is because it gives horrible damage compared to Tiger with no payout. Even so, I would suggest toning down his AP ratios because in my mind Phoenix Udyr works best as a tank, strolling into the middle of the enemy team and sending out constant flames with Cinderhulk and Phoenix's active. And let's be honest; if Udyr is in the middle of your team and you aren't focusing him (which is the counterplay to having your whole team's resistances shredded while he mauls your backline) then you're already doing so much wrong that the resistance shred and true damage are the least of your worries.
Also, Spirit Guard Udyr's dance includes all the spirits instead of only the one you're on and the maxed out ones. It's a small thing, but one that I really miss because it served as a milestone during the game.
