[Champion Concept] Atreus, the Breaker of the Pantheon

SSmotzer·6/9/2017, 10:22:34 PM·14 votes·1,720 views

Atreus lost those closest to him on the fields of battle and to the whims of the Gods. He sought to protect the few he still held close by ascending Mount Targon, as the legends say warriors who best the mountain are granted the strength of the Aspects. Upon reaching the zenith of Targon, Atreus was struck down by the very Aspects he was seeking to aid him, his body becoming possessed by a warmongering Aspect who seeks nothing but battle.

As Atreus's mind faded, it was pulled, perhaps by the will of another Aspect, to the Isles of the damned. There Atreus was granted new life, in death, as his soul was given the strength of a thousand armies, but his thoughts turned from using his power to protect those he cared for. No, now his soul is driven by one thing and one thing only, to punish the Aspects who betrayed him by slay the bastard who stole his body.

"They took everything away from me, my friends, my family... my mind and body, now I will take back what they stole from me."

Melee Assassin/Fighter

Passive - God Slayer: While out of combat for several seconds, Atreus enhances his next basic attack. His next basic attack hits twice, the first will destroy any and all shields, the second strips a large portion of his attack target's armor for 1-2 seconds.

Q - Wrathful Penance - First Cast: Atreus holds out his hand, absorbing the next champion attack or ability he is hit with.

  • Second Cast: Atreus throws a vengeful spirit in a target direction, causing all minions to become feared it passes through and deals magic damage, that is amplified by the damage of the attack or ability blocked, up to a cap.

W - Death's Wake: Atreus becomes untargetable for a brief moment before becoming ghosted and invisible for a few seconds. For the duration Atreus is silenced and disarmed, but upon reappearing, he causes enemy units around him to flee, unless they already have vision on him before reappearing.

E - Heartless Soul - Passive: While below 25% health, Atreus blocks the bonus damage from critical strikes.

  • Soul Shatter: Atreus summons a ghostly hand from the ground in a cone in front of him that attacks all enemies in that cone, dealing magic damage, stripping them of magic resist and destroying any and all shields they may have.

R - Vengeance from Below: Atreus channels for 2 seconds before sinking into the shadows, becoming briefly untargetable as he blinks to a target location. Once he blinks to the location, the grasping hands of the undead will reach up all around him, dealing magic damage over time, slowing, and grounding all enemies in a large area around the target location.

Lol. Did you create this to completely be worthless except as a counter pick to pantheon?

While I like your lore, the current story doesn't totally sink with this. Pantheon is a being of war, but not pointless killing. He only kills those with bad intentions towards Mt. Targon.

Though a little less harshly, Your W is kind of neat and similar to one on my submission. Instead of using the word "flea" the status effect "fear" can be used. That's the name of something Fiddlesticks and a few other champions use.

Your lore is... interesting. I don't think it melds well with Atreus/Pantheon's current story and Targon related lore. The only people Atreus seemed to care for much (or care for him) were his family and Pylas. His family never had trouble and Pylas dies at the peak of Targon (so a little bit of godly whims if you want to look at it that way which it doesn't seem like Atreus did). Atreus also willingly steps into the city at the top so I find it unlikely that he didn't want to get involved with the Pantheon. In conjunction with the Pantheon's brief appearance being all it took to convince his family that they should hold the funeral for him, I would be surprised if he didn't know (or at least have a good idea about) what he was getting into.

Some of the other folk have mentioned some of the other flaws in your lore, and I will let others handle the gameplay aspects as well.

Mebbeh change the name/title. Since there's a champ named Pantheon

Character Design: His appearance seems kinda cool, but he doesn't really stand out. More like a generic undead assassin, but I think it is fine. The lore seems a bit twisted, since he seem to be undead (at least I understood it that way), while having ties to the aspects of Mt. Targon. You listed Kalista as an ally, how though? We don't have any information about Kalista traveling to Targon. Did she try to get a pact with him once maybe? Would like to work that part out a bit since it doesn't seem that natural for me that they are allies.

And I would avoid to use the name of another champion as the title of the champion. I understand that you are less refering to the character Pantheon and are more thinking in line of the meaning "collective of gods", but it still would be confusing for some people.

I like that the kit is repeatedly using ghost hands, his kit seems to have a theme that way. He is all about grasping the people he wants to see dead.

Kit and Gameplay: I love the idea of your E, being able to strip shields from enemies is something we don't have in the game and seems like a cool feature.

But the kit has way too much safety built in, even for an assassin. Let's take a look. Q is basically a spellshield. You are able to block key spells with it. W makes you untargetable, then invisible and increases movement speed. Great escape. E prevents critical damage when at low health, giving you the edge to escape from ADCs. R, while it has to be channeled, can still be used to escape, especially if enemy lacks CC.

I would recommend to reduce the defense in this kit. Which lane do you intend him to be played? Right now, I would say he should be a mid laner, for roaming potential. But that means he could use a spell for wave clearing. So maybe you could add this instead of another spell. Hard decision to think what to change.... the spellshield seems fun, just like the invisibility and that is actually his mobility...

Sounds very interesting, but may have a bit too much to it. Don't know if he necessarily needs that many fears, maybe tie the fear to his W (remove it from Q) and cause it to have a delay. After a short time the fear goes off on minions and slows champions.

Other than that, maybe a massive shield break shouldn't be tied to his passive and E. An ability that deals more damage to shields is an interesting idea though and could definitely be implemented. Perhaps his passive should lose the shield shattering effect and only get the 2nd strike's armour shred. As for his E, make it not destroy shields completely but deal more damage to shielded targets (either a % or flat damage). As for other balance changes, his ult might not need a slow, but still have grounding on it.

Finally, I love how he's basically a Pantheon counter. Makes sense lore-wise and shows very well in his kit. Being able to block crit damage to avoid Pantheon's E passive, able to go untargetable to avoid Pantheon's stun, and his Q can block Pantheon Q. You did a great job of connecting him and Pantheon, and I'm sure there's people out there who would love a strong way to counter Pantheon.

So his E and his passive say: "Shen is a champion?" I don't think it's a good idea to give him abilities that out-right remove shields because that way you make Karma, Lulu, Taric, literally anyone who wants to clutch that locket + Face of the mountain god-tier save, all basically useless if they're trying to keep their ADC alive. Perhaps something less absolute like dealing 150% damage to targets with a shield? For an assassin he seems extremely weak from a burst stand point, his Q makes him wait to be hit and his W does no damage, his E would have to do a lot of damage to compensate but with it removing shields and lowering magic resist it would already be really strong. He is a lot more like the fighter you put as his second class.

Something to consider for his Q: Is he slowed or rooted during it? I imagine it is like Fiora counter. This will make it a little more interesting when you're playing against the champion because it has better out-play than if he can just move freely and say: "No, I'm not CC'd screw you."

Something to consider for his W: Perhaps take away the magic resist reduction from his E and make it so that enemies he runs through lose magic resist?
