#[The Future of C&C] Part 1 - Meet the Archivists!

Hello, Concepts & Creations!

We’re the Archivists.

What’s an Archivist? Good question! An Archivist is a Riot-approved community volunteer who functions as a cross between a moderator and a spokesperson for the creative community. It’s our goal to make sure Concepts & Creations isn’t full of unacceptable behavior and inappropriate topics, but it’s also our goal to work on fostering discussion, expanding community reach, and generally making this board the best place -- and the best resource -- that it can possibly be.

In upcoming Future of C&C posts we’ll be discussing some of our ideas to improve the creative experience here on the boards (and gathering your ideas and thoughts to make sure we’re looking in the right directions!), but for now we’re just going to introduce ourselves so you get some idea of who these people you’re seeing around are.

In no particular order, here we go!

#THE DJINN Hi! I’m The Djinn. A long-time amateur game designer and writer with several years of moderator experience on multiple sites and servers, I’ve been an on-again/off-again board presence on Concepts & Creations. I’m glad to be back as part of the Archivist team, and looking forward to working on improving the creative experience on the boards. Although my expertise is mostly in writing and content design, I’m alway happy to hop in to offer me thoughts and support for creative content of any kind. Feel free to hit me up if you’re looking for an in-depth critique or analysis of any sort of work or, of course, if there are any board issues that need to be addressed!

#ECHOING ##(ECHOING...) ###(ECHOING...) A Season 1 veteran of the Win Nao days before Xin Zhao was balanced, I’ve hung around Concepts and Creations in some incarnation before taking control of the Champion Concept Open Stage (CCOS), which is still going every month (Sign up now!). I’m always looking for improvement in the community as a whole, and I wish to help however I can. I’m also always in a constant state of terror - take that, Fiddlesticks.

#CAPTAIN MARVELOUS Familiar with the old boards? Then you might remember me! Once-famous for my Dungeons and Demacians series and a writer with countless fan fics (Go check out GHoZ, I’m rewriting it soon!), I’m on the job to help with getting the writing flourishing on the boards. Whether it be a champion concept’s lore, fan fiction or just general musing about why Vi is so much better than Jinx in every single category ever? You can always count on me!

Feel free to ask us any questions you want or share any board concerns you might have in the comments below! We’re looking forward to getting to know all of you a bit better, and figuring out what your ideal vision of Concepts & Creations is.

also as a (slightly more) serious question, how do you plan to handle the anti-ADC sentiment in C&C because that seems to be a thing a lot

To some extent I'm not sure we can. It's ultimately not really our place to be opinion police (save when those opinions violate board rules), so I don't think we can prevent people from not being as interested in (or being more critical of) Marksman-based designs.

Ultimately I'd love to find out WHY this sentiment exists and see if we can use that information to help lessen it -- it's possible that there's some lessons to be learned both by those critiquing ADC designs and those designing them (or that people are looking for different things and it's not coming across well in how they communicate), and fostering an environment of meaningful discussion is something I'd like to see us work on. It definitely HAPPENS, but I'd personally love to see it be the rule rather than the exception!

Does this mean we can start putting fan lore in this sub? I was under the impression Riot frowned upon posting stuff like that.

C&C was actually always the place for fanfiction, fan lore, etc. I expect we'll be able to branch out into a separate forum for that as well in the future.

As Echoing said, absolutely. We're happy to welcome all sorts of creative works, and if that means fan lore or fan stories, go for it!

Riot chose 3 of the best people from the forms to do this. I say this because I've gotten reviews from both The Djinn and Echoing before, not sure if I've been reviewed by Captain Marvelous or not.

Thank you!!! Actually, DJinn, you helped me out a ton already with Gameplay suggestions. I can't thank you enough for that. But I've felt like my Voice lines are weak and maybe the story could be more engaging. I'm parranoid about loosing the comptetion off of a weak lore section. I'm really hoping to finish in the top 5, which may be a bit ambitions for a rookie

The Archivists and Wardens were picked from the same community outreach. Our title is a little unique because, after a bit of discussion, we found our goals go beyond simply moderation and improvement of an existing board, as we're looking at how to improve the entire creative experience -- possibly up to and including restructuring Concepts & Creations into more than one board to better suit content (a separate board for streams/videos, for example, is an idea we're tossing around), reaching out to encourage participation from outside the boards community, and so forth.

Take those ideas with a grain of salt though -- nothing is set in stone yet, and we'll be gathering thoughts and ideas from the community every step of the way. If you have any input or ideas, be sure to let us know!

I just wanted to voice my absolute unfettered support for this. Nothing gets in the way of my concept and creation forum experience more than seeing three to four obnoxiously clickbait all caps youtube video titles on the same page. Even if you guys decide not to have a separate forum then I'd really support some sort of discouragement at obnoxious allcap spam titles.

Thanks for the thoughts! All-cap titles are something we've been thinking about, although I don't know where we'll end up on that one, since sometimes caps ARE useful. Great input though, and I'll bring it up to the team.

To me knowledge I've actually never read or interacted with your chapters in any way. I'll take a look later though.

Recently I've personally been looking at kits more than stories, and that's probably why.

Perhaps I should have phrased it as "I've been looking more at kit/mechanics concepts than lore/writing submissions." I love reading lore content, but it takes me longer to comment on it properly, and I've been somewhat busy of late. :)

I assure you there's no conspiracy. There's just a lot of user-created content, and I don't have the time to read it all (or even most of it). And, as you say, 45 chapters is a lot. Is it something one can just pop up in the middle of, or is the context important?

Was there ever a C&C Champion or Item that was considered by the developers and taken ingame (even after some changes) ?

To my knowledge no, although there have been a few champions that have resembled C&C concepts (this is, however, pure coincidence). A few community-suggested skins have made it in (Astronautilus being the one example I definitely know about), but that's about it.

No contest that I can think of. You might be thinking of the Polycount Contest, which is a Riot-sponsored creativity throwdown with people who make unique things, albeit they don't end up in the game.

Oh! Super happy to see this actually being a thing now! Hopefully there being a team of people that actively take part in this community means that more people will come flocking with more awesome concepts c: Of course we can't expect the concepts to ever make their way into the game, but it's still exciting nonetheless.

Anyways, onto an actual question that I have, which you may or may not know the answer to: Will there at any point actually be stated what kind of topics are supposed to go in which boards or will it stay as is, C&C staying an amalgam of different boards, fx. including streaming and highlight videos?

That's one of our goals! We're debating a few ways to split the board up -- and talking about what's ultimately in the best interest of the creative community. I'd love to know your thoughts on that subject as, ultimately, Captain, Echoing, and I are just three people representing an entire community. We're not prepared to make that decision for you guys without carefully weighing your input on the subject!

Our current thinking is that Streams & Videos is likely going to get a new board, and we're debating the value of dividing Concepts & Creations into two other boards: Fan Art, Media, & Skins and Gameplay Concepts. But we're eager to hear other thoughts and ideas!

Making a Streams & Videos board would definately be a nice idea and I'd say that splitting things into Artistic Media and Gameplay Concepts could be a good idea. While I'm more on the Gameplay Concept Bandwagon, having a place specifically to highlight Artistic Media (Which might as well include fx. cosplay) would maybe make it more appealing than posting it among 42 different concepts for Helmet Bro.

Echoing is definitely right that we love lore!

Quick question for you thought: how would you like to see something like that judged? I know in the past Bioluminescence did a combination of popular vote and his/her personal favorite, but I ask because lore is a little more subjective than something like mechanical balance of a kit.

Any thoughts, as a fan writer yourself?

Good Question. I think becuase fanfiction is more subjective than a custom champ kit it should be popular opinion only, with additonal "Archivists Favorite" Awards given to the ones that the archivists themselves like the most.

I think it's a tough call -- with how small our community is relative to some of the others, it DOES unfairly benefit people with multiple accounts if we go by popular vote only. But it's also, as you said, very subjective.

I don't really have an answer for you right now on my own personal thoughts, sadly! I'll try to get back to you though. :)

It would definitely be good. It would help build the community a little more and allow everyone to communicate effectively. Plus it makes it easier to get a group together to play some matches if everyone is down for it.
