Abilities
Passive - The Conquering Ocean
Rising Tide Taifun's oceanic domain is demarcated by a faint line of breaking waves that extends diagonally across the map from top left to bottom right, visible only to him. It starts at the tier 2 towers, but during the course of the match it gradually progresses towards the enemy base until it reaches the farthest point along the diagonal between both bases beyond which Taifun spent more than 5 minutes total during the match. In other words, as Taifun pushes down towers and spends more time closer to the enemy base, his domain slowly expands behind him.
Taifun's basic abilities are more effective in his domain. When casting [R] Worldwave, his domain temporarily expands to cover the entire map.
Sunken Treasure Any destroyed turret or building in Taifun's domain gradually collects sediment around its base. The sediment contains lost moonstone shards, represented as glistening white sparkles. Taifun may collect these by right clicking the sediment, gaining a temporary AP bonus for 20 seconds.
Each ruin accumulates moonstones worth +7.5 AP per minute, up to +75 AP. The buff from multiple ruins does not stack.
[Q] Moonstone Arc Arc lightning that strikes a point, then travels towards the enemy nexus.
Taifun raises his moonstone trident and casts an arc of forked lightning from its tips. The lightning strikes the ground at a target location after a short delay (during which Taifun cannot move), dealing magic damage in a small area. The arc then continues to strike while the impact zone travels a certain distance towards the enemy nexus, damaging enemies in its path.
Interaction with Rising Tide If the arc is targetted at a point inside Taifun's domain, any distance the impact zone travels across Taifun's domain does not count against its travel range, essentially making the ability semi-global.
- Cast range: 650
- Cast delay: 0.75 seconds
- Impact: Magic damage: 60/100/140/180/220 (+0.6 AP)
- Impact: Radius: 125
- Travel distance towards enemy nexus: 850
- Travel speed towards enemy nexus: 1700
- Cooldown: 8.0/7.5/7.0/6.5/6.0 seconds
- Mana cost: 50/55/60/65/70
[W] Thalassian Palace Summons a wall of destructible pillars that faces the enemy nexus.
Taifun summons a row of kelp-covered pillars that burst from the ground with a fountain of water, creating a wall that blocks passage. The wall always faces the enemy nexus (spawning perpendicular to the line between it and the nexus) regardless of the direction of casting. Each pillar acts as terrain and blocks passage in a small radius around it.
The wall can be destroyed. Individual pillars have 6 health (taking 2 damage from attacks, 3 damage from AoE spells and 6 damage from Feast/Consume/Smite).
Interaction with Rising Tide If cast inside Taifun's domain, small waves are seen crashing against the foundations of the pillars. When destroyed, the pillars leave a pile of rubble and sediment that still slows enemies.
- Cast range: 800
- Wall: Number of pillars: 5/6/7/8/9
- Wall: Distance between pillars: 130
- Each pillar: Pathing block radius: 70
- Each pillar: Slow field when destroyed: 40% (if in Taifun's domain)
- Cooldown: 26/25/24/23/22 seconds
- Mana cost: 80
[E] Sea Serpent Creates a waterspout that chases enemies.
Passive When Taifun attacks a minion or monster, a brightly coloured sea snake coils around his trident and bites the target, dealing bonus magic damage and replenishing health. This effect is doubled when attacking a large jungle monster.
- Magic damage vs. minions and monsters: 20/30/40/50/60 (+0.5 AP) (x2 vs large monsters)
- Lifesteal: 50% of magic damage
Active Taifun slams his trident into the ground, summoning a twisting column of whirling water that rises from the ground at a target point. The waterspout grows to its full size during a 0.6 second delay, then starts chasing the nearest enemy unit, prioritising champions. If no valid targets are in range, it drifts towards the enemy nexus at half speed.
Additionally, Taifun may cast Moonstone Arc targetting a point near the waterspout, even beyond his normal cast range, causing the lightning to emerge from within the waterspout instead, outlining the shape of a finned snake's head inside the waterspout. If cast in this fashion, Moonstone Arc does not prevent movement during its cast delay.
Interaction with Rising Tide While in Taifun's domain, the waterspout gains a significant speed bonus when moving directly towards the enemy nexus, decreasing to zero when moving perpendicular or in the opposite direction.
- Cast range: 500
- Waterspout: Duration: 5 seconds
- Waterspout: Radius: 250
- Waterspout: Magic damage: 20/35/50/65/80 (+0.25 AP) per second
- Waterspout: Chase range: 650
- Waterspout: Chase speed: 225 (+ up to 40% in Taifun's domain)
- Waterspout: Moonstone Arc cast range: 400
- Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds
- Mana cost: 70/75/80/85/90
[R] Worldwave A strong current that slows enemies moving against it. Taifun can send rocks along the current.
Amidst dark thunderclouds and flashes of lightning, a giant bronze amphora appears in the air above Taifun's nexus and pours a torrent of water onto the battlefield, flooding the entire map with waist height water. A strong current flows towards the enemy nexus where the water is absorbed by the nexus crystal.
Enemies attempting to push directly against the current are greatly slowed. The slow is less effective on enemies that do not move directly against the current, decreasing to zero if they move perpendicular to the current or away from the source.
- Cast range: Global
- Flood: Duration: 8 seconds
- Flood: Slow: up to 40%
- Cooldown: 140/120/100 seconds
- Mana cost: 100
While Worldwave is active, Taifun gains 4 charges of the following ability: Tidal Boulder This ability takes the form of a line parallel with the current, extending 1500 units towards the enemy nexus and 500 units in the opposite direction.
Taifun summons a boulder that emerges from the farthest end of the line after a short delay and is carried by the current towards the enemy nexus, passing through terrain and colliding with the first enemy unit in its path, knocking the target up and back and dealing damage.
- Cast range: 500
- Cast delay: 0.5 seconds
- Boulder: Travel speed: 2000 along current
- Boulder: Magic damage: 75/125/175 (+0.4 AP)
- Boulder: Knocks up for 0.5 seconds
- Boulder: Knocks back a distance of 200
- Cooldown: 1.25 seconds
- Mana cost: 25

Gameplay
In mid lane Moonstone Arc gravitates towards the enemy base, requiring some precise aiming to hit beyond its fairly short cast range. Taifun should always attempt to push as hard as possible because of Rising Tide, making his position stronger when he does decide to retreat.
In the jungle Sea Serpent deals high damage and provides sustain, allowing him to clear. Counterjungling enables him to expand his domain beyond the river, then snipe at laners with Moonstone Arc.
Teamfights Worldwave/Rising Tide and Sunken Treasure make it easy for Taifun to hold a defensive position, but he is fragile in an offensive teamfight due to his lack of an escape other than the easily countered Thalassan Palace. When going on the offense, he should stay back and snipe with Moonstone Arc and Sea Serpent.
Lore
Princess' quarters, Thalassopolis, Atlantea
"The only dream I have," the diver confided the mermaid. "Being dragged down and crushed by the ocean's weight." He looked into the depths of her sea green eyes. "But last night I had another dream..."
Throne room, Thalassopolis, Atlantea
"HOW DARE YOU BRING THE DRYWALKER INTO THE PALACE?!" A school of servant fish were washed out of the throne room by Taifun's mighty voice. At a distant shore, a fishing boat was struck by a freak wave and capsized. "Because he was suffocating, father! They need air to breathe!", the princess reminded the fierce king, indicating the air bubble in which she had placed the unconscious diver. "He was attacked by a kraken!"
"The drywalker invaded Atlantea and stole our treasures! He is an enemy of the Marai!" Faint sparks of lightning appeared at the tip of the trident she was holding. She had made sure to remove it from his possession before breaking the news or the discussion would have been over very quickly.
With an angry gesture he showed her a faintly glowing shard of sacred moonstone, removed from a lantern that used to illuminate the dark waters outside the palace. "He took this. Our lights will fade soon enough without drywalkers taking them from right under our nose!"

"Summoners. Even kings bow before them. They disarmed Runeterra's nations, forcing them to settle their disputes through mock battles. When one side "wins", the dead are resurrected by those moonstone crystals on the battlefield." the diver explained.
"They own the land, but they know little about the ocean. So they pay private treasure hunters to plunder its depths in their place. Scum of the sea, unemployable at any reputable seafaring operation. Scum like me." The diver smiled mischievously. "We found your city. We thought it was a sunken Ionian acropolis from the time of myths. And in your chandeliers were all those priceless moonstone shards just waiting for me. Don't you hate me now?"
She found his tales of the surface world fascinating. He didn't look half bad either, if you ignore the awkward legs. And at least he is prepared to take his fate into his own hands, she thought bitterly. "My father Taifun...", she answered. "He would rather allow the light to fade while waiting for a hero that will never come..."
Throne room, Thalassopolis, Atlantea
"Don't you see, father? He killed a kraken with nothing but an anchor! He is the hero of the prophecies!" "Absolutely not! He is not the Ti--" "He is the Tidecaller! He will retrieve a sacred pearl from the depths! He will save us all!"
The king fought off her embrace. This drywalker was not the mighty warrior of myth. For one, he was not even a Marai. He needed a hydraulic cocoon of iron just to survive in the abyssal depths. And, of course, the better to carry the Marai's treasures to the surface with. The diver was not a dashing hero with a rose anemone between his teeth but a common thief.
She could be forgiven for letting her emotions take over. The real Tidecaller had yet to be found and the light of the moonstone was dimming. There was little time left to fulfill the prophecy. He had sent parrotfish to the farthest reaches of his domain with a desperate call for any heroes foolish enough to brave the Great Deep. They had returned in silence.
The king swam in circles around her. "Perhaps the darkness is divine punishment for letting these drywalkers plunder our kingdom!"
"Please, father, listen! He may be our only chance!", the princess pleaded. The diver had told her that a drywalker's eyes may submerge themselves in saltwater in times of great sorrow. Would it soften his heart? "His lords are in possession of a sacred moonstone. He may save us all!"
"I gave him mushrooms. He will awake on a shallow reef without any memories of Atlantea." Looking down upon his daughter, the king added, "Nor will he remember you, Nami!" "Father...!" "I have nothing more to say to you. Leave." He crossed his arms and turned his back to her, facing the stoic statue of the god of light and prophecy, Lunari, shrouded in impending darkness. It took him a few moments before he realised that its sacred amulet was missing.
"You gave him the amulet!", the king's voice thundered through the hall. Along the Ionian shore, a mother and her daughter were swept into the ocean by a sudden wave, never to be seen again. "You told him about the prophecy! He will remember!" "Father! He knows where to find moonstones!" "I will not suffer a drywalker to fulfill the prophecy! I should not have shown him mercy. I will not make the same mistake again!"
That night, he found her room empty. A servant fish had seen her slip away through an open window under the cover of the darkling light towards the edge of the oceanic shelf and the perilous depths beyond.
Six days later, she returned a Tidecaller.
It took great effort by Atlantea's priests to clean her wounds and purge the toxins in her blood. She never asked to see Taifun, and he never came to visit her.
Above, a storm descended upon the ocean as a great wave rose up from the depths and headed towards the Noxian shore. Many good ships were lost that day, but the crew of a single doomed ship managed to send a brief radio transmission: "Taifun is co--" The message was discarded by surface oceanographers. Surely the ancient Ionian god of tides was just a myth!
Summoner's Rift, Serpentine River, Kaladoun
With a spectacular burst of magic, the Nexus shattered under the relentless blows of Nautilus' anchor, revealing its brilliant core: a shard of pure moonstone, the size of a barrel but worth a kingdom. It would glow for a hundred years. He took one last look at the mangled corpses of his former crew, illuminated by the pale light of the moonstone, their skulls and bodies smashed into a bloody mess.
Carrying the moonstone behind him on a chain with one hand, he carefully removed a glowing amulet from a toolbox. It depicted a mermaid and a man at the shore of the Guardian's Sea holding a radiant moonstone crystal. He did not know who planted it there, or why.
But as the night of the hundredth year fell, he did know one thing: destiny was waiting for him at the shore.
