Mana and mana regen in League are stale. The items which grant mana or regen need to focus on particular playstyles and strategies similar to the rework to crit items. This board is made to talk about some fresh ideas. Feel free to comment on and critique my ideas as well as share your own. Be sure to list the strengths and weaknesses of your items in both power and in design as well as the general purpose of the item.

Drop a like if you think mana items need freshened up.

Item name: Mask of the Betrayer/ Beatrix's Spite

Purpose of item: give mages added burst damage (primarily to squishies) while gating the item's snowball potential.

Recipe: item 3136 + item 3114 + item 3108

Stats: 70 ap 20% cdr 150% base mana regen

Unique Passive: Eyes of Pain - +15 magic penetration Unique Active: Spellspring - consume (20 x champion level mana) to gain (x ap/level) for the next (x) seconds. Additionally, abilities against enemy champions deal an additional (Y magic damage/level) that stacks over the duration. (i.e. (Y) damage on the first spell, (Y)x2 on second, (Y)x3 on third, (Y)x4 on 4th). Auto attacks deal half of this damage. Spell casts during Spellspring are half cost. (45 second cooldown). Unique Passive: Spellfall - after Spellspring has been used your mana costs are doubled for the next (x) seconds.

Possible Concerns: Though I have left out a lot of numbers for this item I'm still worried about the power it can give.

This item gives magic penetration to enhance spell damage to low mr targets, something ap assassins typically don't have outside of item 3020 or runes.

The active consumes mana to gate the use of the item on bursty mages whenever they please.

The additional stacking damage is to incentivize players to get another few spells or auto attacks out before the active is over and put the bursty mage in a situation where they may be in more danger to finish off a target.

The spellfall passive creates another drawback to using the active and will leave assassins with fewer options to get away if they fail an assassination or will leave them mana starved if they attempt to go back in too soon.

Item name: (name is pending -shaman themed)

Item purpose: give mages another defensive item with spell vamp that is unattractive to manaless champions.

Recipe: item 3145 + item 3010

Stats: 80 ap 350 health 500 mana

Unique: +10% spell vamp. Increased to 15% when below 50% mana and to 20% when below 25% maximum mana. Unique Toggle: Mana Transmutation - While active, gain 10% cdr and convert 15% of all damage against you within 500 range into 30% damage to your mana. Toggling on costs 60 mana.

Problems: Ryze - It's so hard to make a strong mana item and not break this champion.

This item should benefit short ranged mages who need to get into the fray to deal their damage. The added spell vamp at lower mana along with the transmutation active should create clutch situations where you should feel as though you are just managing to live and bring some risk to using your abilities too fruitfully with the active on.

Similar to item 3800, and to keep the item distinct and able to be a strong purchase, the health and mana regen passive from item 3010 will be lost upon completion.

The toggle costs mana to not allow manaless champions access to the item's power.

While toggled on, the mana consumption from the multiple sources can leave a mage mana-starved but will let them survive through a good amount of damage.

Item name: Athene's Cornucopia

Purpose of item: grant mages the ability to spam their abilities and get tons of cdr and mana regen in one item without making the item grant too much power too early. The idea is "controlled spam".

Recipe: item 3028 + item 3108

Stats: 50 ap 20% cdr 100% base mana regen

Unique Passive: Manafont - Restore 2% of missing mana every 5 seconds Unique Active: Mana Harvest - Consume 1/3 of maximum mana to gain a stack of harvest. Unique Passive: Mana of Plenty - After reaching 10 stacks of harvest you gain an additional 20% cooldown reduction, 350 mana, 20 + (5%) ap and 30% of maximum mana is restored on kill or assist.

Concerns: Item becomes too strong and is a one-stop-shop for mana and cdr. Necessary adjustments would likely be to the total harvest stacks and/or cooldown of the active.

Athene's Cornucopia has a mechanic where you sacrifice a portion of your mana to put away and save towards future rewards. In the end this item should have you using your abilities with little worries about running out of mana and bring a very decent power spike after a full harvest.

While you could have the passive stacked in 7 and a half minutes the trade off of using the active can be fairly severe in lane and should cause you to really think about the proper time to pick your harvest.

The manafont passive works well with lower levels of mana and will help mages to keep some spells going after they use the active.
