[CCOS] March Results!

Sir ArmaMalum·4/2/2015, 4:25:53 PM·8 votes·3,341 views

Hellooooooooo concepting community! It's that time yet again to reveal who placed where in this month's installment of the CCOS!

But first, as you've hopefully expected we have to give a round of applause to this month's bear themed judges:

Bearly Leah and Dr Bearchin Md!

It's never an easy task being a judge for so many concepts, even less so when it's 100% voluntary. So be sure to thank them where you can, because the CCOS couldn't happen without awesome people like them!

Alright, alright, results. Where did I put those.....

#And YOU get something, and YOU get something!

Don't fret if you didn't make the leaderboards, you'll still be entered into the CCOS Official Archive as well as a good chance at getting some useful feedback to your concept from this month's judges.

Find your concept's feedback here! Steps to access:

  1. click link
  2. page 1 (Final Count) is a quick way to see all the scores, switch to Page 2 (Judging) by clicking the tab at the bottom. This is where the specific feedback is.
  3. be sure to scroll to the right to find the feedback for your concept. The spacing can get weird do don't be afraid to zoom out a bit to scroll more evenly!

Be sure to tell me of you have any trouble accessing the document, I'll be sure to help out as much as I can and can give you your score directly if needed.

#Next Month!

Judges. Always need em! E-mail me at '[email protected]' with your IGN (in-game username) if at all interested. There's absolutely no harm in giving it a shot! All you need is an interest in concepts, time and an opinion. So unless you're an old time-locked wizard or a unfeeling monstrosity from another dimension you're eligible to judge!

#Addendum

I will be in class/lab until much later today after posting this. I may be able to sneak a comment or two running between them but other than that I apologize for the delay. I am also in the process of contacting the judges to make sure they know about this post and stop by. No promise though, I can't force them to say anything and they have their own schedules.

I've decided to give my reasoning to the judges based on what they've said, just for the purpose of adding some reasoning that I am shocked wasn't talked about on the actual champ concept itself...

First up is BearlyLeah

Character story was pretty interesting and unique, kind of a Marvel's Galactus sort of feel.

Yeah, the main idea was to give lore to the void, seeing as how we don't know so much about it but we have all the void beings out and about that DO know about it. And if they are able to work along side these humans and yordles during matches then I am certain they would be able to have some time to talk when waiting to ambush the enemy team as they try to Dargon it up. Plus the idea of a being so evil that it makes Vel'Koz snap out of his calm and disturbing personality made me chuckle a bit to not include it.

Kit had multiple issues: scaling on all abilities seemed really high, abilities themselves seemed to have no real synergy with each other

I... Don't see that, if that's the case then there are some other champions who have that same problem that are in the game, and perhaps the abilities are a bit high in the scaling terms, but when your design is to be a Fighter/Tank your not exactly going to be focusing on those now are you? Sorta like Sion but with a different set of cards really

some of the descriptions needed to be more specific (does the percent scaling go off of bonus or total stat numbers, ranges on most of the abilities) Don't all percent scaling go off of total stat numbers? And yeah range is not my forte, can never tell if something is too far away or too nearby when making these concepts so I just leave that blank to interpretation.

the ultimate itself seemed a bit overpowered (AoE execute based solely on percent remaining health).

Illustrated comics to introduce the champion were pretty cool.

Yeah, wanted to spice it up for a change with the lore, everyone just writes it down and that's that, but I just wanted to SHOW it more.

And now it's time to swing at Dr Bearchin Md

Cute way of portraying the lore, the comics are fun. I'm on the edge about Vel'koz in this story. His own lore depicts him more of a loner. His only care is science so becareful of how you include other champions.

Look at what I mentioned in Bearly's part

The Ult for his kit is WAY too strong and has no encouragement of counterplay other than don't be low. There's many execution type spells but an AoE K.O ability is unfair in team fight and 1v1 scenarios.

Oh trust me, it was a lot worse in the beginning, the percentage numbers were not very fair, though I thought I mentioned it to be a narrow cone and not an AoE, sorta like Grave's Q, if it was an AoE then trust me it wouldn't be doing that!

For his E: there needs to be some way to explain why champions who have no weapon (i.e Lee Sin) can't auto attack. Creative liscense only extends so far in this case. Maybe if it was a mist that blinded, etc.

If you were caught on fire, attacking someone else wouldn't be the first thing on your mind, no matter what your attacking with. Especially if the weapon is either too hot to touch or is also on fire... Like Lee Sin's feet or whatever he does for basic attacks (don't own him, don't play him)

He has no lucky charm, or mention of something lucky (which was the bonus requirement), so I can't really award any points there. Kings don't need luck, plus I really dislike the bonus these contest have, always pestered me to no end that they aren't really bonus points if the winner is going to have it. Not really a contest if someone can win by a few points because of something like that which really doesn't have to actually do with the champion concept itself... No offense ArmaMalum

And that's it, now if you excuse me, I have a victory image I drew to delete...

WHAT. SECOND PLACE. I LOVE YOU.

Dyslexai4/2/2015, 6:59:19 PM2 votes

Wow, that was some pretty stiff competition. Congrats to Kamiroo on the victory, and everyone else that placed! I'm satisfied with fourth, but I do want to point out that going by the scoresheet, the tie for second should be between Zyx and Corrode, not Solomon. But dang, one point was the difference between second and fourth...

It seems like the biggest, and most common critique I've received is that the soldiers feel too similar to Azir. While both champions both have soldiers under their command, they are both fundamentally different in a number of ways. Azir's soldiers are immoble, untargetable, and utterly expendable. Alvedaen's soldiers have AI (but you can still indirectly issue them commands), can be killed, and are nearly worthless without Alvedaen himself playing off the benefits they offer him. I won't deny that I drew a bit of inspiration from Azir, but it was only because I legitimately don't like Azir's (and, for that matter, Yorick's) playstyle and wanted to try something different with the minionmancer trope.

Again, I'm not trying to complain about my score, I'm pretty happy with where I landed, I'd just like to better understand why everyone seems to think they're the same champion when one is a melee fighter who's supposed to be in the thick of things, and one is a squishy midlane mage with a disengage ult.

(Also, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one around here who enjoys Monty Python references. :P I was conflicted about adding the Life of Brian joke to Alvedaen, but I thought it fit pretty well either way.)

So does anyone look at who was where in scoring, or does top 5 only matter?

Keagn4/2/2015, 6:10:35 PM1 votes

Probably the part that surprises me the most is how little effort people think I put into Helena apparently...I have one of the lower effort scores :( , I did dialogue, I drew a visual representation, how is that not effort? D:

Gentleman Gems4/2/2015, 5:16:12 PM1 votes

Oh Monty python and the Holy Grail, such good British humour.

Oh and "NI" XD

Statikin4/3/2015, 12:06:48 AM1 votes

Nuuuuuuuuoooooouuuu! I JUST MISSED the runner ups! 165 out of 200, thats the best score I've gotten so far. Cant believe I JUST missed it. Oh well, hopefully my next concept makes the list. :D

But, I'm still really happy with the critique I got, thing that brought me down was probably being too similar in archetype to Azir.

So when will be Aprils CCOS, I was in 8th place this month so my new champion could get 6th XD. seriously though where is it?

I was sort of shocked my kit was scored so low... Any suggestions to make it more "active?" Jungling-wise Q/W/E will all be used frequently. In lane (top) as an alternative, Q/E will still be used frequently and ult at the proper time for incoming ganks etc. I don't think adding more CC would be fair with his sheer amount of untargetability and mobility he already has. What if I added damage along the path for E such that you could damage a champ between you and a minion and then disembody for further damage should they be close enough to said minion? This would make the ability two-fold, either for a well-timed escape or for upfront damage. Would this be OP?

Edit: Went ahead and added the second instance of damage as well as a passive to make offensive use more rewarding (hoping to make the kit more "active"). Would make for some interesting AP builds between E and his ult to :P

SushiKnight4/2/2015, 5:19:45 PM1 votes

ooooh :o!

Keagn4/2/2015, 5:26:17 PM1 votes

Man, I only missed the mark by 4 points. I wonder why I scored so low :o

Keagn4/2/2015, 5:28:00 PM1 votes

I kinda see why Rezko won though, the detail is pretty thorough. At least the lore. Well done everyone!

SushiKnight4/2/2015, 5:36:17 PM1 votes

Mhmmmmmm........Welp I guess my champion was pretty much another version of "Sona" Cries a river
